You can Count on having a good time at Whitby. Famous for being where the fanged one leapt off his ship in the novel Dracula, the North Yorkshire seaside resort nowadays holds an annual Bram Stoker Film Festival, and is home twice a year to the Whitby Goth Weekend where around 100,000 folk follow in the Count’s footsteps.

There’s also the annual Whitby Regatta with several famous Whitby boats and ships, including a replica of HMS Endeavour (Captain James Cook learned his trade in the town). And natch there has to be a mention of the Whitby fish and chip shops, with the Magpie Café called the best fish and chip shop in Britain by celeb chef Rick Stein (there are award-winning seafood restaurants too if your tastes are a tad more upmarket). From Whitby, it’s easy to get to other North Yorkshire coastal towns such as ScarboroughFiley and Bridlington, and there are plenty of villages dotted about within walking distance.
