  • Simple and scenic rural site a mile from the Yorkshire coast
  • A mile from Hayburn Wyke waterfall; Scarborough 15 minutes' drive
  • A few minutes' walk from the Cinder Track path and a pub
Few things in this world can compare to flitting around the Yorkshire coast. Toing and froing between Scarborough's seaside scenes to Whitby's clifftop abbey is best done by bike along the Cinder Track, an old railway that runs through the green surrounds of the North York Moors National Park along easy flat terrain. And when it comes to finding somewhere to rest your head after all that pedalling? The Hulleys Campsite could well be the answer. This simple and scenic rural site is set a few minutes' walk from that traffic-free bike trail and 10 minutes from a local pub. On top of that, The Hulleys Campsite is within easy strolling distance of the coast (roughly a mile from base), where the splendid Hayburn Wyke waterfall makes a very pretty backdrop for picnics, walks and general seaside frolicking. It's a five-minute drive from these spacious pitches into the village of Cloughton, where a couple more pubs and a farm shop are on hand to keep you fed and watered during your stay. For supermarkets and a wider range of restaurants, steer yourself towards Scarborough (15 minutes). The Hulleys Campsite prides itself on keeping camping here simple. The facilities reflect that, with low-key but functional toilets and showers. Dogs, barbecues, commercial vehicles and student groups are all welcome.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked Liked everything.
Location: close enough to both Scarborough and Whitby for shopping and tourist traps. The approach is quite steep but we got up easily enough in XLWB Transit.
Layout: just 20 pitches in a long line next to a small wood.
Amenities: plenty of taps along the length of the boundary fence. Hot water outside the shower block for washing-up. One very good electric shower but considering that there would only be around a maximum of 40 people on site, its availability is good. Loos are cleaned and maintained a couple of times each day. There is even a mobile phone charging point.

Disliked No dislikes.
Amenities: there is no mains hook-up. The listing makes this clear but one guy asked where he could charge his leisure batteries. Really?

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked Walking distance of a beautiful waterfall, beach and nice country pub!
Pitch size was great very spacious and self check in works well.

Disliked Unfortunately, the toilets weren’t cleaned properly. It looked like someone had tried to use toilet cleaner, but they forgot to use the toilet brush, so they were still quite dirty!

I only have good words for Hulleys campsite. Lovely site with spotless…

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked I only have good words for Hulleys campsite. Lovely site with spotless toilets, ideally placed for some lovely walks to Robin Hoods Bay and Scarborough (with a beautiful view over the latter), and some great pubs close by. You can't go wrong when they've Hayburn Wyke waterfall just down the hill either, got it all!

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked The Hulleys was a nice quiet tranquil site offering the perfect place to relax.
Being able to take a stroll down to the local pub and equally get across the Ravenscar, Robins Hoods Bay or Scarborough in the other direction following either the coastal path or the Cinder Path.

Good basic site with great location. Needs toilets/showe upgrading

Camping pod

Liked The little pod was comfortable and warm with tea and coffee making facilities, a little table and a double and single bed. By far the best feature was the view of Scarborough bay, it was amazing and changed all the time with the weather and the time of day. It was a wonderful distraction. The peace and quiet and the bird song were delightful. We had a lovely stay and would use the pod again.

Disliked No dislikes. The blind over the door/window was damaged but James fixed it as soon as we mentioned it to him so no problem there.

Non-electric grass tent or campervan pitch

Liked Good amount of toilets in warm shower block. Great views. Good walks nearby. Freezer for ice packs was good, and there’s a three pin socket for charging your phone. Host James very friendly.

Disliked A bit far from shops but this is obvious when you book the place. Just remember all your gear if you don’t want to head out again.

Local attractions

Planning a trip to Scarborough is easy, as Britain's first ever seaside resort is a mere 15-minute drive to the south. Donkey rides, Victorian buildings like the Spa, sticks of rock and amusement arcades are all available here, as are two sweeping sandy beaches, the Asian-inspired landscapes of Peasholm Park and Oliver's Mount, a large wooded hill 500 metres above the town with a well-stocked fishing lake and fantastic far-reaching vistas. Whitby (half an hour) is the other must-see town in the area, but this part of Yorkshire is peppered with other sights too – there’s Flamborough Headland Heritage Coast (40 minutes) with its nesting birds and beaches, Sewerby Hall and Gardens (45 minutes) for tours round a historic country pile, Flamingo Land Resort (50 minutes) for adrenaline and excitement… Want to focus on the North York Moors National Park? Ride out on mountain bikes through Dalby Forest (35 minutes), step among the scenic stones of Rievaulx Abbey (an hour and 10 minutes) or get down to the village of Goathland (30 minutes) to see the Mallyan Spout waterfall and a train station that featured in the Harry Potter films.
