  • Small site on a farm on the edge of North York Moors National Park
  • Half an hour’s drive from Scarborough and 40 minutes from Whitby
  • Dogs welcome; easy access to hiking and biking trails in Dalby Forest
Fancy a spot of wild camping in a location that puts you within easy reach of windswept moors, North Sea beaches and forested walks? Then head to South Moor Farm, on a small livestock farm in the middle of Dalby Forest, a large wooded area on the southern edge of North York Moors National Park. With just a handful of pitches on well-maintained grass plots, this relaxed and rural spot comes with access to basic amenities, including a water tap, waste recycling and a disposal point for chemical waste (green chemicals only). There are two toilets and a shower on site, too. The pitches are in a paddock between the owners’ house and a barn, within easy cycling or walking distance of many local rights of way. A couple of pubs can be reached within about a 10-minute drive, and larger towns like Scarborough are half an hour away if you fancy a day at the beach or a night out – or if you need to stock up on essentials or camping equipment. Dogs are allowed at this family-friendly site, but please keep them on a lead at all times around the farm.

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked It was a lovely campsite, in a lovely secluded and quiet spot. The cycle into Dalby Forest was easy and didn't take too long. The instructions to get there were helpful and clear, and I was greeted and set up straight away. The farm dog was very friendly too! The showers and toilets were clean, and they had change for the showers if needed.

Awesome little site!

Non-electric grass tent pitch

Liked Quietness of site. Feeling like camping on our own. Owner. Animals around. Price.

Disliked Nothing really. Perhaps sinks to brush teeth and have a wash in would be better separate from toilet.

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Lovley place to stay, great dog walks and spectacular views. The owners were a lovely couple and very helpful.

Disliked Only one dislike which is that it could do with a separate shower block. Yes you paid a pound to use the shower but it doesn't break the bank and keeps cost down and considering there's only 1 it keeps people from being in there too long.

Electric grass motorhome pitch

Liked Quiet location,

Disliked Filthy toilets and shower
Paying £1 for a 5minute shower

From the manager: Oh Dear, sorry you found "01/06/25 Filthy toilets and shower. It would be great if guests told us if there is a problem with the toilets or showers, we would put it right.
The toilets are cleaned requarly and checked a couple of times during the day.
Other guests have said;-
28/05/25 Showers and toilet facilities were clean and hot.
25/05/25 The toilets were warm and clean.
We feel £1 for the shower is reasonable, some guests are happy with that, some are not.
We could increase the site fees and make the shower free but we prefer our lower site fee.

Local attractions

Start your exploration of Dalby Forest at the visitors’ centre (15 minutes’ drive), where you can get expert advice on the best hiking routes. If you’re into birdwatching, head to the Raptor Viewpoint, where valley views come with sightings of ospreys and sparrowhawks. At National Trust - Bridestones, Crosscliff & Blakey Topping interesting rock formations date from the Jurassic Age. In Scarborough (half an hour), the 1930s Scarborough North Bay Railway, which goes through Northstead Manor Gardens and along the North Bay, is an effortless way to explore (some of) the town. Stop for an ice cream or fish and chips on either of the two sandy beaches, which are separated by a headland topped by the ruins of Scarborough Castle. Whitby (40 minutes) is renowned for its connection to Bram Stoker, who was inspired to create his character Dracula by the atmospheric ruins of Whitby Abbey, on a headland accessed via the 199 Steps. Across the River Esk, the Whalebone Arch overlooks the working harbour and is a great frame for a picture of the abbey.
