  • Peaceful and simple site in the North York Moors National Park
  • A 20-minute drive to Pickering; 35 minutes to the coast and Whitby
  • Right next to Cropton Forest, with trails running from the site
Seeking some simple simplicity in the North York Moors National Park? Take a look at Wardle Rigg Campsite, a pop-up site on a working farm next to Cropton Forest. This is a mighty peaceful location, accessed via a two-mile farm track with almost no passing traffic. There are fabulous views out over the moors on one side of the site, and trails into the forest on the other (one of the trails leads all the way to Levisham station, three miles away, for heritage train rides). A cliff walk, overlooking the railway, is also very close by. Wildlife is plentiful around here – you’ll no doubt wake to the sound of birdsong in the trees and you may also spot deer and other creatures while on site. The camping field has been left wild to help protect the ground nesting birds and minimise impact on the land – and facilities have been kept to just a compost toilet. You’ll also be asked to take your rubbish home to recycle. Groups, families, solo travellers and dog owners are all welcome here, but please be respectful to your fellow guests and the surroundings – keep dogs under control, be sensible with barbecues (off ground only, thanks) and keep the noise down. It’s all very peaceful and remote here, but you won’t be completely cut off – Pickering is about 20 minutes’ drive away for shops and places to eat. Those who remember the TV show Heartbeat can also have a drink in the ‘Aidensfield Arms’ over in Goathland (which is also a Harry Potter location).

What customers say

This is a back-to-basics campsite offering an idyllic escape with stunning views and dark skies. Guests appreciate the peaceful setting, ideal for nature lovers, walkers, and cyclists, with firepits permitted. The site is praised for its spaciousness, friendly hosts, and immaculately kept toilet. Some found access roads challenging and noted the site can be exposed in windy weather. While one reviewer felt it was expensive for a basic field, others found it very reasonably priced. Additional toilet facilities are being considered due to high demand.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked Amazing views, unspoilt suroundings. Easy access to forest trails and hiking routes. Good for cycling. Firepits allowed, bring your own wood and water take your rubbish home.

Sunsets and sunrises- dark skies.

Back to basics for those that appreciate nature. If you need external stimuli, probably best not for you.

Disliked Narrow access road with some steep hills and bends.

Avoid in a North West storm- quite exposed site.

From the manager: We're so happy you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you here again.

There's always a downside to having the dark skies view of the stars and the clear sunsets etc, and that's having to go out of the way from towns and cities, so I fully understand where your coming from re steep hills and bends down the lanes and we are almost in the centre of the moors with Whitby just up the valley. If we could change all that we would be sadly not to be.. But we hope our kind of site is where you can go to get away from it all and enjoy nature in a peaceful setting and glad you enjoyed you enjoyed your time with us.

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked The location is stunning, loads of space for walks and we'll spread out pitches.
I got there about 3ish, and managed to get a spot overlooking the beautiful views.
Super friendly hosts who personally came round to meet everyone.
Toilet was immaculate.

Disliked Could do with more than 1 x toilet, but understand this was only the 2nd night of the campsite being open.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: We're so glad you enjoyed your stay and we'd love to have you back, Thank you for the feedback, especially regarding the toilet. I do agree that the weekend of your stay was a far busier than we were expecting as we had many last minute bookings on the day. So I fully understand the need for a second toilet if its that busy again, and as you say it was only the second weekend of having people stay with us so still learning a lot. We were checking the toilet many times throughout the weekend to make sure it was clean at all times to keep up demand as well. Thank you for the pictures too and hope to see you again soon.

If you want to escape and switch off then this place is perfect!

Disliked Nothing to dislike about this site - it is exactly as described

Non-electric grass tent or motorhome pitch

Liked We (my 7yr old and I, on our 2nd night away with our new van after being hardened tent campers for years) arrived around 7pm and quite a few vans and tents were already occupying the mown pitches at the far end but we parked a bit further back in rough grass along the side of the hedge/forestry.

Signage was for “wild camp” but I was expecting a sign for “Wardle Rigg Campsite” so was a bit confused by that but assumed we were in the right place…we were.

Very peaceful. Lots of space to not be on top of each other or hear each other. Lots of wildlife chatter. The sunset was heavenly.

Harry (I think his name was) was absolutely lovely, very welcoming and often seen around sorting the toilet out or welcoming newcomers. He was very keen to get our feedback to improve the site. Bank transfer or cash accepted. Signal not an issue as there’s a big mast nearby (not visible).

1x Composting toilet very clean and fresh. Regularly cleaned/emptied. Just could have done with 1 more as we had to wait a few times which wasn’t an issue but if it were busier, that could be an issue. Remember to bring your lantern torch to hang on the hook behind you in the loo, as it’s pretty dark (even in the daytime) but there are lovely fairy lights inside (just not very bright).

Views of the moors are absolutely great. £10.50 for the night - perfect!

Thanks for a great stay, we’ll remember this site as our first proper night in our new van!

Good luck with the site, Amy and Belle x

Disliked (Disliked) The fact that I don’t live there!

The price has gone up to £20 already and then £40 for summer holidays and whilst it’s a lovely site, there’s nothing there to justify the price increase to £40. I couldn’t justify spending £40 on just a wild field (even for the view/peace) but would stretch to £20. The main attraction for me was the £10.50 price tag. There are plenty of other sites in similar areas that have water and showers for £40pn (not on pitch up).

You can only stay Saturday nights (for now). Could do with Friday night to not have to pack up and leave straight away and spend the day just relaxing or biking etc. 12 noon check out would have been good to just enjoy the peace a bit more and not be packing up to leave straight after breakfast.

No tap but that’s stated on pitch up so wasn’t expecting one but something to bear in mind if you’re camping here, as you need to bring ALL your water for cooking/washing up/washing/drinking etc. maybe that’s what’s coming for the 2 night minimum £40pn price in the summer? We’d struggle to manage without a tap for much longer than a night or two without having to pack up the van and drive to get more water for a family.

Feedback from my 7yr old : Could do with a mown area for kids to kick a ball around or run around without thistles and hard stalks to fall on.

From the manager: I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and since your review I'm delighted that you wanted to come back and stay the following weekend too! All your feedback we've taken on board and are looking at ways to improve with it so thank you for letting us know.

I think you may have misread our pricing rates. It's very much £10pp/night and we have no plans to increase this rate this year. I think you may realised this on your second stay after we spoke but there's no facility to amend your own reviews once posted on Pitchup.

The reason we're are only open on weekends is due to the Council dispensation we're run under for a temporary camp site. We're very limited on how many days we can open during the year and it made sense to just be open on the Saturday evenings but I do fully understand where your coming from. We will be looking into other options in the future on how we can cater better on dates.

I also understand where your coming from mown areas for recreation but at this time of year I was worried about possibly upsetting some of the wildlife that live in the field at present and decided it was best left to them for now especially with us being a wild camping site. I hope your understand.

Thank you very much for your feedback and for staying with us and we hope to welcome you back again soon.

If you're heading to the site via Newton upon Rawcliffe you'll come to the end of the forest track with a sign for Wardle Rigg Farm. Go up the track for approx 2 miles and look for the last of three properties up the track. The entrance is just after the main farm entrance that goes directly into the field. If you get to the forestry barrier you've gone too far.
