Seeking some simple simplicity in the North York Moors National Park? Take a look at Wardle Rigg Campsite, a pop-up site on a working farm next to Cropton Forest. This is a mighty peaceful location, accessed via a two-mile farm track with almost no passing traffic. There are fabulous views out over the moors on one side of the site, and trails into the forest on the other (one of the trails leads all the way to Levisham station, three miles away, for heritage train rides). A cliff walk, overlooking the railway, is also very close by. Wildlife is plentiful around here – you’ll no doubt wake to the sound of birdsong in the trees and you may also spot deer and other creatures while on site. The camping field has been left wild to help protect the ground nesting birds and minimise impact on the land – and facilities have been kept to just a compost toilet. You’ll also be asked to take your rubbish home to recycle. Groups, families, solo travellers and dog owners are all welcome here, but please be respectful to your fellow guests and the surroundings – keep dogs under control, be sensible with barbecues (off ground only, thanks) and keep the noise down. It’s all very peaceful and remote here, but you won’t be completely cut off – Pickering is about 20 minutes’ drive away for shops and places to eat. Those who remember the TV show Heartbeat can also have a drink in the ‘Aidensfield Arms’ over in Goathland (which is also a Harry Potter location).

喜欢 The view was immense. The owners were so lovely. Clean and fresh compost toilet. Fresh farm eggs delivered in the morning. Huge open space to pitch up. Lots of walks off site. No bins or water so bring your own!

喜欢 We only stayed for one night and it was lovely! The owners were extremely welcoming and my friend and I would definitely go back. The walks in the area were also absolutely stunning.

喜欢 The site is lovely and peaceful with great views over the moors. When I arrived I called the owners and was told I could park anywhere I wanted in the field. The composting toilet was always clean, no complaints there but bring a torch.

I emailed the owners and pre booked some free range eggs which are very reasonably priced in my opinion. I got my eggs delivered when they came around to collect the fee.

Plenty of walks directly from site, the forest is just the other side of the field and the cliff side walk is lovely with stunning views. You can easily cross the railway line for longer walks and more stunning views.

The only thing to be weary of if you are a dog owner it was like tick central for my fluffy husky so bring lots of spray or stock up on whatever you use.

I have Vodafone and signal was no problem on site.

喜欢 Absolutely loved this site! In the middle of nowhere with plenty of walking routes in all directions!
Back to basics site with excellent signal and a great price! Owners were lovely as well!

不喜欢 If I was to be really picky… the only thing I would have found beneficial would have been a water tap to fill on board water jugs. But that wouldn’t stop me going back!

喜欢 Have just returned from a 2 night stay on this lovely little campsite, peaceful, relaxing and back to basics. Only 4 other pitches taken while we were there so got to pitch up with a beautiful view of the moors perfect for watching sunrise and sunset. The compost toilet was emptied twice daily and was very clean. If you want to escape the craziness and reset with nature this is the place to do it. Surrounded by wildlife we saw owls, deer, rabbits, hares and heard lots of different birds you just don't get in the towns and cities. Last night was a very clear night and me and my son both said we have never seen so many stars in the sky absolutely stunning. Lots of walks accessable from the campsite and within half an hour drive of many local attractions. The owners were lovely and very helpful. We will definitely be returning only wish I had found this place earlier so we could squeeze in another visit this year.

If you're heading to the site via Newton upon Rawcliffe you'll come to the end of the forest track with a sign for Wardle Rigg Farm. Go up the track for approx 2 miles and look for the last of three properties up the track. The entrance is just after the main farm entrance that goes directly into the field. If you get to the forestry barrier you've gone too far.
