Abbey Farm Showfield: A stone's throw from the abbey

General

  • Basic site on a working farm overlooking Whitby and the North Sea
  • A five-minute drive from centre of Whitby, 35 minutes from Scarborough
  • Less than five minutes’ walk from brewery, beach and Whitby Abbey

When stays full of gothic drama push all the right buttons, head along to Abbey Farm Showfield, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the centre of Whitby on the Yorkshire coast.

This is a top spot for back-to-basics stays, as the site is set up with just Elsan and waste water points and a small toilet block. There’s no electric hook-up or showers, so it's best to come along prepared to embrace the simple life.

The site’s well placed enough to more than make up for the simple facilities though – it’s less than five minutes’ walk to Whitby Brewery, Whitby Abbey and the top of the famed 199 Steps, and just a little over five minutes’ walk to the nearest beach.

Those keen on stretching legs might like to set out on the Cleveland Way long-distance path (a 109-mile route joining Helmsley and Filey), which slinks past about 300 feet from the site. If something less lengthy appeals more, opt instead for a stroll into Whitby itself (a 10-minute walk or five-minute drive) for more beaches, an RNLI museum, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum (and HMS Endeavour replica) and whale-spotting boat trips. Be sure, while out and about, to pop into a fish and chip shop too – stomachs will be grateful.

Please note

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Please note that the toilet facilities are unisex.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

This site is at the top of a cliff so it can get very windy at times. Please be careful when erecting tents, awnings and gazebos.

Toilets were a disgrace - I expect more when paying so much - not worth cost when a field is normally about £10 per night

    Disliked:

Facilities are basic would benefit from shower block and phone charging stations.

Superb location, right at the top of the cliff overlooking the town with beautiful views all around. The Abbey is literally on your doorstep, as is the excellent brewery. Really well placed to get down the 199 steps which lands you right at the harbour.

Check was well organised with staff on hand at the gate. Only slight gripe was that payments had to be made in cash as they did not have a card machine.

Facilities were simple but fine. Proper flushing toilets, albeit situated in portakabins. Likewise plenty of water pipes and large skips for rubbish.

We could part wherever we wanted so we chose an area in the middle of the very large field, well away from others and it was lovely. I noticed a car marked "security" driving around so presumably they would be on hand to deal with any issues or excessive noise but we had no problems at all.

    Disliked:

Price was a bit steep at £25 per night, given the limited facilities but we would still do it again.

Local attractions

Not quite done with seaside days just yet? Make the 35-minute drive to Scarborough, farther south on the Yorkshire coast, where – as well as more sandy stretches – guests can explore the Scarborough Fair Collection, get adrenaline pumping at Luna Park, wander about the Italian gardens, and spy out the marine species at Sea Life Sanctuary.

Turn away from the sea, then, for inland explores starting in the sprawling North York Moors National Park (10 minutes), which is home to Go Ape Dalby treetop courses (35 minutes) and the rides and animal shows at Flamingo Land (40 minutes).

There’s a healthy dose of history to be had hereabouts too, with Ormesby Hall (40 minutes), Nunnington Hall (55 minutes), Rievaulx Terrace (one hour) and the spectacular Castle Howard (55 minutes) – famed double for Brideshead in both productions of Brideshead Revisited – within relatively easy reach.
