Abbey Farm Showfield: Abbey views from pitches

General

  • Basic site on a working farm overlooking Whitby and the North Sea
  • A five-minute drive from centre of Whitby, 35 minutes from Scarborough
  • Less than five minutes’ walk from brewery, beach and Whitby Abbey

When stays full of gothic drama push all the right buttons, head along to Abbey Farm Showfield, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the centre of Whitby on the Yorkshire coast.

This is a top spot for back-to-basics stays, as the site is set up with just Elsan and waste water points and a small toilet block. There’s no electric hook-up or showers, so it's best to come along prepared to embrace the simple life.

The site’s well placed enough to more than make up for the simple facilities though – it’s less than five minutes’ walk to Whitby Brewery, Whitby Abbey and the top of the famed 199 Steps, and just a little over five minutes’ walk to the nearest beach.

Those keen on stretching legs might like to set out on the Cleveland Way long-distance path (a 109-mile route joining Helmsley and Filey), which slinks past about 300 feet from the site. If something less lengthy appeals more, opt instead for a stroll into Whitby itself (a 10-minute walk or five-minute drive) for more beaches, an RNLI museum, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum (and HMS Endeavour replica) and whale-spotting boat trips. Be sure, while out and about, to pop into a fish and chip shop too – stomachs will be grateful.

Please note

The park caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

This site is at the top of a cliff so it can get very windy at times. Please be careful when erecting tents, awnings and gazebos.

Unbeatable views and handy access to Whitby town centre.06/06/2021

  • Liked:

Spectacular clifftop scenery right next to Whitby town centre (basically right behind the Abbey). Also a nice brewery/restaurant next door.

    Disliked:

Staff were nice enough but they expected cash on arrival (upfront for the whole stay) so that felt pretty dated. Toilets and water taps were acceptable, but quite a large site so be prepared to walk a long way if you can't camp close enough. Also, nearest place to get milk is down the 199 steps in the town centre, so come prepared.

    - Fantastic views and a few minutes walk from Whitby
    - you can choose your pitch and space isn’t limited
    - lots of availability as it’s a large site
    - was quiet after 10pm

    Disliked:

    - no showers, we have a campervan so couldn’t stay for longer due to no washing facilities.
    - expensive for a site with only a toilet block and drinking water.

loved the site and having the people on the gates was nice , it made you fill safe.
    Nice welcome and friendly site

Have placed this site in our book to come back again, as we was fist time campervanning people.
shame so many steps to go down to harbour ha ha ha.

    Disliked:

It was a shame that the toilets was not looked after by other people, but that is something you cant change.

also we have a foggy mist over the sea and you could not see out to sea, but yet again another issues that the site owners cant fix.

But overall , nothing to complain about for the site owners.

Local attractions

Not quite done with seaside days just yet? Make the 35-minute drive to Scarborough, farther south on the Yorkshire coast, where – as well as more sandy stretches – guests can explore the Scarborough Fair Collection, get adrenaline pumping at Luna Park, wander about the Italian gardens, and spy out the marine species at Sea Life Sanctuary.

Turn away from the sea, then, for inland explores starting in the sprawling North York Moors National Park (10 minutes), which is home to Go Ape Dalby treetop courses (35 minutes) and the rides and animal shows at Flamingo Land (40 minutes).

There’s a healthy dose of history to be had hereabouts too, with Ormesby Hall (40 minutes), Nunnington Hall (55 minutes), Rievaulx Terrace (one hour) and the spectacular Castle Howard (55 minutes) – famed double for Brideshead in both productions of Brideshead Revisited – within relatively easy reach.
