When stays full of gothic drama push all the right buttons, head along to Abbey Farm Showfield, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the centre of Whitby on the Yorkshire coast. This is a top spot for back-to-basics stays, as the site is set up with just Elsan and waste water points and a small toilet block. There are no showers, so it's best to come along prepared to embrace the simple life. The site’s well placed enough to more than make up for the simple facilities though – it’s less than five minutes’ walk to Whitby Brewery, Whitby Abbey and the top of the famed 199 Steps, and just a little over five minutes’ walk to the nearest beach. Those keen on stretching legs might like to set out on the Cleveland Way long-distance path (a 109-mile route joining Helmsley and Filey), which slinks past about 300 feet from the site. If something less lengthy appeals more, opt instead for a stroll into Whitby itself (a 10-minute walk or five-minute drive) for more beaches, an RNLI museum, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum (and HMS Endeavour replica) and whale-spotting boat trips. Be sure, while out and about, to pop into a fish and chip shop too – stomachs will be grateful.

Great spot near Whitby Abbey & sea, walking distance to town. Campers love the spacious pitches, friendly staff & good value. Basic but clean loos. Can be windy & noisy, no showers (advertised). Brewery's a plus.

Liked Location and decent price at £25

Disliked Toilet facilities crap portaloos on the other side of the entrance road, so had to walk over a mud track dug up by all the cars and vans , had to be off by 10 am instead of 11 last time or they would charge £5 feels like a Mickey take.

Disliked The field was just too overcrowded when I booked it said a 10 meter pitch it was nothing like that we were told to go anywhere on field and everyone else too units were far too close it was overcrowded the toilets were not cleaned they were left in bad states by some campers
