When stays full of gothic drama push all the right buttons, head along to Abbey Farm Showfield, a family-friendly site five minutes’ drive from the centre of Whitby on the Yorkshire coast. This is a top spot for back-to-basics stays, as the site is set up with just Elsan and waste water points and a small toilet block. There are no showers, so it's best to come along prepared to embrace the simple life. The site’s well placed enough to more than make up for the simple facilities though – it’s less than five minutes’ walk to Whitby Brewery, Whitby Abbey and the top of the famed 199 Steps, and just a little over five minutes’ walk to the nearest beach. Those keen on stretching legs might like to set out on the Cleveland Way long-distance path (a 109-mile route joining Helmsley and Filey), which slinks past about 300 feet from the site. If something less lengthy appeals more, opt instead for a stroll into Whitby itself (a 10-minute walk or five-minute drive) for more beaches, an RNLI museum, the Captain Cook Memorial Museum (and HMS Endeavour replica) and whale-spotting boat trips. Be sure, while out and about, to pop into a fish and chip shop too – stomachs will be grateful.

Liked Great location with easy access to Whitby and the coastal path. Easygoing staff onsite to check in and out with.

Disliked Toilet block could do with updating but not the end of the world and it does state it’s a back to basics site so an honest description on pitch up.

Liked Nice big open field, perfect for a large motor Home, sensible price per night, short walk to the center of whitby, right next to the abbey and a brewery, good coastal walks.
Plenty of bins for rubbish and Lagrange points for camper waste .

Disliked Not a complaint but there is often a queue for the toilets on a morning.

Liked Location was amazing, we ended up in the second field and there was hardly anyone else in it. The main field was very full. Toilets were portaloos but were very clean.
