Views of the abbey, sea and moors

General

  • Clifftop pop-up site with views of the moors and sea in Whitby
  • A short walk to Whitby's beach, boat trips, museums and steam railway
  • Food vans and bar on hand during Whitby War Weekend 2019

War in Whitby? Panic not: this is Whitby War Weekend, from 24 to 26 August 2019, an immersive history event involving World War II Allied and Axis forces, battle re-enactments, firing displays, live entertainment, catering and a licensed bar.

More? History fans attending can also immerse themselves in Blacksmith demos, archery, axe throwing, vintage exhibits, market street, animal encounters, ferret racing, airsoft range, field kitchen cooking demos, vintage vehicles... and, new for 2019, a multi-period living history event. And don't forget the 1940s hairdos...

Guests at this fab pop-up site on the cliffs next to Whitby Abbey get free family entry (two adults and three kids) to the War Weekend. There are serviced toilet blocks on site as well as water taps, and even though there's a war on, a fleet of food vans and a licensed bar will be seeing to the sustenance side of things (no ration books required, either...).

For a break from the battles, take the famed 199 Steps stairway down into Whitby for beach walks, watersports, whale spotting boat cruises and tours of the Captain Cook Museum; for thrills with a chill, take a Dracula Experience guided walk around the Yorkshire town where Bram Stoker dreamt up his fang-toothed Count.

Or for a more calming experience, take a stroll through leafy Pannett Park, finishing up with fishing history and fine art in the museum and gallery.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Whitby War Weekend (24-26 August 2019): This event involves battle re-enactments, which will include loud noises, bangs and explosions. Please do not bring any pets or other animals on to the site if you think they are likely to be in any way affected by these activities.

Please be aware there will be participants on both sides of the conflict for battle re-enactments. They will be in uniform, carrying arms and acting battle scenes.

Location is absolutely amazing. Views of the Abbey in one direction, views of the sea in the other. We were the only visitors the first night and had a whole field to ourselves (shared with a herd of friendly sheep). Perfect grass and ground for camping in our tent.

    Disliked:

No sign post or any indication where the farm actually is. We drove past it twice before we noticed the small "Abbey Farm" sign on the gate and figured it must be the right place.
Porta-loos were clean but really, there's never anything nice to say about them.

Amazing views and very welcoming, friendly lady. Nice and quiet site and great value for money. It is windy, but so are all cliff tops. The toilets are portaloos but they were very clean and well stock with tissue and hand sanitizer ect. No showers but this site is perfect for a short break and a seriously short walk down into the town too. Definitely returning !

Gorgeous setting and amazing views , close to the beautiful whitby abbey and the steps down to the town , 15min at the most and your in the harbour , met the owner who is a lovely and friendly woman , ( didn’t catch her name ) we will be staying there again in the summer and the price of staying was extremely reasonable, we would recommend this campsite :)

    Disliked:

The wind ( which is no fault of the site ) as it’s too be expected on top of a cliff

The only thing we were really lacking was a shower but other than that there is nothing bad to say about this site at all

The site owner was friendly. Close to Whitby Abbey and Whitby Brewery at the top of the 199 steps.

    Disliked:

On a cliff edge, but, we did choose a very windy weekend. Nature's fault, not the site.

Local attractions

While you're getting historical, don't forget the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, whose steam puffers chuff their way from Whitby through the cracking landscape down to Pickering (40 minutes' drive), no doubt with added wartime touches during the War Weekend.

Walkers can choose to hop off this fab heritage steam railway at the restored stations of Levisham or Newton Dale Halt (40 minutes and an hour from the site) for paths across the moors and there's more fine hiking turf around Goathland (25 minutes), whose station might seem familiar to Harry Potter fans...

For coastal paths, it's a quarter of an hour's drive to Robin Hood's Bay, or a couple of hours' breezy clifftop walk. You can follow the 109-mile Cleveland Way right down to Scarborough (half an hour by car) for a spot of Edwardian seaside grandeur, rides on the Luna Park funfair, walks round the ancient castle and assorted shark/dolphin/sting ray interactions at the SEA LIFE sanctuary.

There are more rides and thrills to be found at Flamingo Land, along with a small zoo and for treetop walks and zipwires, Go Ape! Dalby is on hand, on the edge of the walking and nature-spotting opportunities of Dalby Forest Park (both 45 minutes).

Must see

  • Whitby Abbey (0.2 miles)
  • The Moors National Park Centre (11.8 miles)
  • Dalby Forest Visitor Centre (15.1 miles)

National Trust

  • Yorkshire Coast (7.6 miles)
  • Bridestones, Crosscliff and Blakey Topping (13.0 miles)
