  • Pop-up site on the headland above the popular seaside town of Whitby
  • A short walk to Whitby's beach, boat trips, museums and steam railway
  • Catering units, bar and evening entertainment from Friday to Sunday
Wangle a weekend away wandering around one of the north-east’s most well-known seaside towns with a stay at Whitby Showground in North Yorkshire. Guests at this prime pop-up site on the headland overlooking the town will settle in right next to the atmospheric ruins of Whitby Abbey, making it a fine place to immerse yourself in the area’s history. After roaming the ruins, take the famed 199 Steps stairway down into the older part of Whitby, a gorgeous place of cobbled streets and quaint shops (with some of the best fish and chips around too). Pay a visit to Captain Cook’s Museum, then stroll through pretty Pannett Park gardens and peruse the displays at Whitby Museum and Art Gallery. Browsing the shops, you might want to treat yourself to a unique piece of Whitby jet, a glossy black gemstone often found on the North Yorkshire coastline. And so to that coastline… there's a beach area in town, along with one of the country's prettiest traditional harbours, where you can sort boat trips out to Ravenscar's seal colony or along the coast to Staithes, and book family-friendly fishing trips or romantic twilight trips. On top of all this, Whitby Showground is the host site for Whitby Traction Engine Rally (5-7 August) and Whitby War Weekend (27-29 August). Those staying on site will have complimentary access to these events. Guests will be pleased to note that while the town has a fab traditional feel, the facilities on site aren't of the vintage variety: there are portable toilets and Elsan points on site, as well as water points.

Local attractions

Don't forget the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, whose steam puffers chuff their way from Whitby through the cracking landscape down to Pickering (40 minutes' drive). Walkers can choose to hop off this heritage steam railway at the restored stations of Levisham or Newton Dale Halt (40 minutes and an hour from the site) for paths across the moors and there's more fine hiking turf around Goathland (25 minutes), whose station had a starring role in the first Harry Potter film. For coastal time, it's a quarter of an hour's drive to Robin Hood's Bay, or half an hour to Scarborough for assorted shark/dolphin/sting ray interactions at Sea Life Scarborough. There are more rides and thrills to be found at Flamingo Land Resort (40 minutes); for treetop walks and zipwires, Go Ape Dalby (35 minutes) is on hand, on the edge of the walking, cycling and nature-spotting area of Dalby Forest Park (40 minutes). Other days out nearby might take you to Eden Camp Modern History Theme Museum (40 minutes), Castle Howard (an hour), North Yorkshire Water Park (45 minutes) or for a fragrant wander through Wolds Way Lavender (45 minutes). York is an hour and 15 minutes away for even more history.

Powered grass campsite

Liked: Large ground helpful staff

Disliked: No showers portaloos not always clean. This was not Whitby show ground. Changed venue to Malton a week before so no chance of finding other accommodation due to it being a bank holiday sure more notice should have been given knowing that the ground was bad would have then been able to get a refund and book somewhere appropriate. Entertainment on Friday and Saturday was wartime and not really suitable can’t comment on the group on Sunday. Extremely disappointing.
