Panpwnton Farm: Games on site (photo added by manager on 22/03/2023)

General

  • Shropshire farm site on the Offa's Dyke Path and by the River Teme
  • A 10-minute drive to the Spaceguard Centre; 40 minutes to Elan Valley
  • Stroll along the riverbank to Knighton in 20 minutes

Just next to the Offa’s Dyke Path and on the banks of the River Teme, Panpwnton Farm is about as close to Wales as it’s possible to be without actually being in Wales (although as the border’s just a couple of hundred metres away you can easily flit between the two nations as you wish…)

That location makes this a prime pick for anyone making their way along the entirety of the Offa’s Dyke Path – but there’s plenty of walking (and cycling too) to be done nearby for folk who aren’t up for such long-distance ventures. The farm is in the southern stretches of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (10 minutes' drive from Llanfair Waterdine), where lots of scenic trails await, and you can also try out shorter stretches of Glyndwr’s Way, another major trail on the Welsh side of the border.

There’s pretty rural scenery all around the farm, but you’ll not be stranded miles from civilisation – in fact it’s only about a mile to the small town of Knighton for pubs, eateries, shops and a railway station. You can drive down there in five minutes or so, but the favoured way to travel is to stroll along the riverbank for 20 minutes.

Barbecues are permitted on site, so stock up on goodies for the grill while you’re in town. A washing-up area is on hand for cleaning up afterwards, and there are hot showers to help you do the same for yourself. There’s no wifi on site, but most guests get decent phone signal, and there are charging facilities to make sure you’ve got plenty of juice to plan your adventures.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

The good thing about owning a camper and having older children is being able to stay in campsites like this out of season, nabbing a beautiful spot by the river. The facilities are super clean with hot water, the location is rural without being remote. Walked into town by the river and had good pub grub and real ales at the Horse and Jockey, and chatted to some of the locals. The dog has really enjoyed pottering around and had a great walk (on lead) on Offa's Dyke. Enjoyed our stay so much that we stayed an extra day

Nothing to dislike here other than a bit of mud. But it's a farm in the country and it's October 😊

This is a lovely little site with great facilities within easy walking distance of a Knighton, which has supermarkets, pubs, restaurants and takeaways - plus an excellent tea shop.
Owners friendly and helpful, bathroom and kitchen well equipped and kept very clean.
A terrific base for a walking holiday, or just getting away from it all.
    I will be visiting again.

    Disliked:

Only thing that I missed was chemical toilet emptying facilities. The toilets on site are great, but if you have your own in your van it's nice to be able to use it in the middle of the night and know that you'll be able to empty before you leave.

Peaceful farm riverside setting, could hear owls at night and the dark sky made star gazing a joy. A rustic barn has spacious showers with seats & door hooks (it’s the little things that make the difference) nice touch at the pot wash to have a kettle/microwave/ fridge freezer to use. Lots of walking paths directly from the campsite. 15 min walk to nearby Knighton which has an interesting town heritage trail.

    Disliked:

Be careful on the narrow roads- but it is rural Shropshire.

Very clean toilet/shower facilities and good kitchen facilities (kettle, fridge and washing up station). Good for rambling and near to Knighton, we ate at the Horse and Jockey one night due to bad weather and the food was delicious. We pitched up near the river, it was lovely hearing the Teme when waking up and having a little paddle.

Unspoilt working farm, yet mod facilities; thoughtful; no fuss; peaceful. Night Sky is a big surprise (I live in a city). No public roads adjoining this camp site so always felt safe from traffic. The site is sunny. I was ten metres away from the infrequent mid-Welsh railway, but it stops running at night and the earliest was around 6am and I guess with no freight trains. The camp site is flat.

    Disliked:

As a matter of urgency please prune back above two metres height the lone small tree by corner of barn ablutions where an eye could be poked out in the dark (for me saved by my specs); although please preserve lovely Night Sky without unnecessary lights nor any christmas flashing lights (my torch batteries were low, but it is difficult adjusting your vision coming straight out of this building with the brightly lit facilities. A minor point is an arrow through barns would be welcome, because I arrived at dusk; although I just followed the main track drive in the end. I am always alarmed by air pollution caused be wood burning stoves. However I arrived about 8pm and by 10 o'clock the smoke had gone. I stayed on Sunday night.

Really beautiful location - a lovely short walk along the river to knighton where there are loads of great pubs and cafes. Managed to see a bit of the Hereford art trail at the old school house. The campsite is a beautiful peaceful location with gorgeous views of the hills. Showers and toilets were always clean and well stocked with lots of hot water. Plenty of amenities - there's a kettle and microwave if you don't fancy using a camping stove and you can rent firepits and buy logs for a reasonable price. Would definitely come back again!

The location is perfect. Right next to some beautiful walks through the forest and up Panpwnton hill, and right next to the river, only a 10 min walk into knighton which has some lovely little cafes and pubs. We loved playing in the river and standing on the footsteps across the border between England & Wales. The facilities at the campsite are great, plenty of hot water, fridges and a kettle. Would highly recommend!

Local attractions

As you’ll probably be skipping about either side of Offa’s Dyke, it makes sense to start your trip with a visit to the Offa’s Dyke centre (five minutes’ drive) to find out about the ancient landmark. For other walking trails, head to the Elan Valley or Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd (both 40 minutes).

For a closer look at the natural world, plan trips to the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre (25 minutes) or stop by at the Red Kite Feeding Station (40 minutes) to see these splendid beasts in flight. The Spaceguard Centre observatory (10 minutes) is also worth a visit if you’d like to find out more about the skies overhead.

Castle outings are part of the landscape for trips here too – perhaps to the impressive 13th-century fortifications of Stokesay Castle (half an hour) or the art-filled rooms and colourful gardens of Powis Castle and Garden (50 minutes). If you’d rather skip straight to the garden strolls, try Hergest Croft Gardens (25 minutes).
