Panpwnton Farm: Pitches

General

  • Shropshire farm site on the Offa's Dyke Path and by the River Teme
  • A 10-minute drive to the Spaceguard Centre; 40 minutes to Elan Valley
  • Stroll along the riverbank to Knighton in 20 minutes

Just next to the Offa’s Dyke Path and on the banks of the River Teme, Panpwnton Farm is about as close to Wales as it’s possible to be without actually being in Wales (although as the border’s just a couple of hundred metres away you can easily flit between the two nations as you wish…)

That location makes this a prime pick for anyone making their way along the entirety of the Offa’s Dyke Path – but there’s plenty of walking (and cycling too) to be done nearby for folk who aren’t up for such long-distance ventures. The farm is in the southern stretches of the Shropshire Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (10 minutes' drive from Llanfair Waterdine), where lots of scenic trails await, and you can also try out shorter stretches of Glyndwr’s Way, another major trail on the Welsh side of the border.

There’s pretty rural scenery all around the farm, but you’ll not be stranded miles from civilisation – in fact it’s only about a mile to the small town of Knighton for pubs, eateries, shops and a railway station. You can drive down there in five minutes or so, but the favoured way to travel is to stroll along the riverbank for 20 minutes.

Barbecues are permitted on site, so stock up on goodies for the grill while you’re in town. A washing-up area is on hand for cleaning up afterwards, and there are hot showers to help you do the same for yourself. There’s no wifi on site, but most guests get decent phone signal, and there are charging facilities to make sure you’ve got plenty of juice to plan your adventures.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

No naked flames are allowed inside the hired accommodation units.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

    It was so quiet and peaceful! We managed to pitch up in a semi-secluded site by the stream, and had that area all to ourselves!

    All the comments from my review on 18th August still stand but I dropped a few stars !

    Disliked:

    Still only one shower for the whole campsite while waiting for the commissioning of the showers in the new block. That's annoying. Furthermore, a poor lady got stuck in one of the toilets of the new block during my 2nd stay last weekend ! The lock got stuck. I fetch her husband who managed to free her up. I hope that the campsite owner will review this as it is a serious safety risk !

    * Friendliness of owners;
    * able to arrive and leave at anytime;
    * small site;
    * peacefulness;
    * level pitches;
    * wonderful scenery;
    * listening to the owls as dusk fell;
    * nice, friendly neighbours;
    * 15 minute stroll into Knighton along the River Teme;
    * right on the Offa's Dyke Path;
    * easy access to Glyndwr's Way in nearby Knighton;
    * brand new shower/toilet/washing-up area block almost completed (only waiting for the showers and current shower perfectly adequate in the meantime)
    * sockets in the toilet block for hairdyers, etc;
    * good pubs and chipshop in Knighton;
    * next to a single track rail line - about 6 single-carriage trains a day - and we walked to Knucklas one day and got the train back to Knighton!

    Lovely location, 10/15 minute walk into Knighton, pubs a plenty. Toilet block very pleasant & kept nice and clean. Train track does run right alongside the site, but it’s only a single line & a handful of trains each day. Currently only one shower, but it’s a small site so not a huge issue. New shower block being constructed alongside the already opened new toilet block.

    We got a fantastic spot, private and quiet, right by the river with easy access down to the riverside. The river is shallow and slow-moving, so perfect for the kids to play and paddle in - it really made the stay. Even with such a peaceful rural setting, the town is only a short drive/walk away, so it was easy to get to the shops when needed. The facilities are basic but clean, and cover all you need for a camping trip really. Bit disappointed by the things to do with young children in the surrounding area - limited and underwhelming - but, can see that it would be a fantastic base for anyone wanting to do some long hikes. Anyway, it's still a lovely area of the world just to look at, with some spectacular views around.

    Disliked:

    Communication from/with the hosts was pretty poor to be honest. They wanted us to use their firepits but gave no indication how we could get hold of them. The host for whom we had been given contact details was not on site, and the person on site was hard to get hold of.

    Can definitely see that if we hadn't got a quiet pitch by the river our stay would not have been as enjoyable.

    Great campsite. Had a lovely time. Lots of room but wasn't busy so we could pick anywhere to go. Had fridge, kettle and charging facilities which was fantastic. Area to wash cutlery too. Toilets, showers area were fine but could be limited if realy busy but they were being done up at time.
    Great location for nice walk to knighton shops and pubs. Also Offa's dyke path walk up to hills was fantastic. Great views. Would definitely stay again.

Local attractions

As you’ll probably be skipping about either side of Offa’s Dyke, it makes sense to start your trip with a visit to the Offa’s Dyke centre (five minutes’ drive) to find out about the ancient landmark. For other walking trails, head to the Elan Valley or Carding Mill Valley and the Long Mynd (both 40 minutes).

For a closer look at the natural world, plan trips to the Small Breeds Farm Park and Owl Centre (25 minutes) or stop by at the Red Kite Feeding Station (40 minutes) to see these splendid beasts in flight. The Spaceguard Centre observatory (10 minutes) is also worth a visit if you’d like to find out more about the skies overhead.

Castle outings are part of the landscape for trips here too – perhaps to the impressive 13th-century fortifications of Stokesay Castle (half an hour) or the art-filled rooms and colourful gardens of Powis Castle and Garden (50 minutes). If you’d rather skip straight to the garden strolls, try Hergest Croft Gardens (25 minutes).
