The Swan Inn: Site looking south

General

  • Quiet adults-only rural Herefordshire site near the River Wye
  • A 15-minute drive from Hay-on-Wye and Offa’s Dyke Path
  • In the grounds of a pub with terrace; walking trails nearby

Sling a trusty bag over your shoulder, grab some sturdy shoes and round up your co-adventurers, as walking trails, mountains and market towns are on the cards from The Swan Inn. Close to the River Wye and surrounded by the quiet Herefordshire countryside, this adults-only site is well-based for diving in the Wye Valley scenery.

A literary plunge is more the tune in Hay-on-Wye (15 minutes’ drive away) – but as well as the famed bookshops and great places to eat, there are canoes and paddleboards for hire. Back on drier land, national trails crisscross this part of the countryside: the Wye Valley Walk is five minutes’ drive away and Offa’s Dyke Path is 15 minutes’ drive away.

With other assorted walking and cycling routes around, you'll no doubt be happy that you've selected to stay in the grounds of a pub where you can nurse a drink or two a short stroll from your pitch. The terrace, decked out with fairy lights and outdoor seating, is just one of the splendid spots on site ready for some chillout time.

As you'd expect from this setting the views are pretty splendid (think hills and open farmland with the River Wye running nearby). The site has immediate access to the road going between Hereford and Brecon, so as well as being in a relaxing spot, you’ll be well-connected to other destinations – and the farm shop five minutes’ drive away when you’re looking for some fresh produce to eat.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No charcoal barbecues allowed.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

Units heavier than 3500 Kg are not allowed.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

A cable measuring at least 6 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Units longer than 8 metres are not allowed.

Bookings must not be for more than 3 consecutive nights.

Guests under the age of 18 are not allowed on site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Reception is unmanned after 10:30 p.m.. Please inform the site while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time, so that the team can provide information about your unit/pitch.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.

Excellent facilities, friendly staff, excellent outdoor kitchen food29/09/2021

  • Liked:

Clean facilities, good EHU and water to every pitch, small quiet site (apart from when pub leavers left the overflow car park (car doors, engine starts) next to our pitch (no7), excellent food and service from the outdoor pub kitchen. Great little honesty shop if you needed it. Dogs welcome and provided with a biscuit and water in the pub. Pretty use of wild flowers to make site more attractive. Good comes before arrival although would have been even better if someone had popped over to say hi during our stay and check everything was ok.

    Disliked:

The pitch felt like it was part of the overflow car park especially when people leaving pub due to car doors slamming and engine starts. Pitch 7 Would be better as a dog walk area as too close to the overflow parking and the footpath entrance is overgrown down the road so you need to walk in a very busy road to get to the field entrance. It’s extremely fast traffic and no footpath. Worth asking the land owner to maintain the footpath entrance or for access across the land at a safe place closer to the pub. The wifi cut out more when the pub and restaurant were open and more people accessing it. That said we would stop over again for a 1 night stop only to taste the pub food again! Pitch was expensive given location at end of car park. If I’d known I’d have requested one if the caravan grass pitches.

Fantastic site at the rear of the pub, but well away from any noise. Just seven pitches, all well laid out and level. The quality of the facilities was top class, really modern, clean and well-equipped, including heaters, modern showers, and even wooden duck boards. There is a well stocked shop with an honesty box, washer etc. Wifi was strong and free. We ate at the pub and had a fabulous meal - all in all I highly recommend the Swan!

Beautiful little site, excellent facilities, everything you need on site, dog friendly pup,
Great owners and staff, lovey touch with the hoesty box shop
A nearby dog walk less than 5 minuet walks away (need to be very careful along the stretch of busy road to get there)
bus into Hereford (evry 4 hours) stops right out side pub
considering its on a main road hardly any road noise at all
New venture for owners and we wish them all the very best for the future
looking forward to seeing them on 4 in a bed in March
    would definetely stay again

    Disliked:

only little niggles really, little bit pricy compared to similar sites that would maybe have lesiure facilities for the same price, the sluice could do with a back splash and maybe a dry mop in shower rooms to leave the floor dry for other guests

Local attractions

Walking’s certainly one of the go-to pursuits around here, but what kind of trails will you be clobbering? For those long-distance routes, the 136-mile Wye Valley Walk (five minutes’ drive) passes hills and the river, while the 177-mile Offa's Dyke Path (15 minutes) traces the border between Wales and England.

There are challenging mountain paths up in the Black Mountains (an hour and 20 minutes) and for easier-going walking or cycling routes through village landscapes, the Black and White Trail (five minutes) should fit the bill. Of course, the Brecon Beacons National Park (50 minutes) is another hiking hub, but other outdoor activities are in full flow here too, from caving to gorge walking.

When you fancy sprinkling some history into your stay, Arthur's Stone (10 minutes) has a decent helping, in the form of a Neolithic tomb linked to King Arthur. Hay-on-Wye (10 minutes) has a castle, or there are museums dotted around Hereford (20 minutes), a nice pairing with a distillery trip or shopping outing.

And to round off your historical route, perhaps the National Trust’s The Weir Garden (10 minutes) might serve as a digestif, as this historic garden was once under Roman settlement.

Must see

  • Ludlow Castle (20.5 miles)
  • Goodrich Castle (22.3 miles)
  • Stokesay Castle (22.8 miles)

National Trust

  • Cwmmau Farmhouse (5.1 miles)
  • The Weir (6.8 miles)
