All distances are calculated "as the crow flies".

For a small town, Buxton is held in elevated regard. First and second up, it’s the highest market town in England at over 1000 feet above sea level and has the highest opera house in all the land. It’s a spa town that’s the only other apart from Bath to be given the accolade ‘aquae’ in its name by the Romans – said baths now have the biggest stained glass window in Britain. (Not *in* the baths, though, that would just be weird.) And it was named as one of the three purtiest towns in the country in 2013, although those those bestowing the honour used the term ‘attractive’ instead. We prefer purty.

Those who book Buxton campsites oft end up in the Peak District too; although it’s a slight porkie to call Buxton ‘the gateway town to the Peak District’, it’s only a little lie as the town is very close to the national park. And whether you’ve planned to or not, we suggest that anyone camping in Buxton spends an afternoon among the vast limestone walls and stone poached eggs of Poole’s Cavern… Start off with a tram tour from Buxton’s Pavilion Gardens to see the sights – tis all very purty indeed.
