  • Family-run campsite on a dairy farm in the Peak District National Park
  • Access to Lathkill Dale directly from the site
  • Woodfired pizzas and ice cream sold on site
When you’re keen to get out exploring the Derbyshire Dales, you can’t get much closer to them than Haddon Grove Farm Campsite. This welcoming, family-run caravan and camping site has direct access to spectacular Lathkill Dale from the pitches. Located on a dog-friendly working dairy farm – you are welcome to meet the cows, horses and chickens – with views to the hills and dales of the Peak District National Park, the site was established in the early 1950s and has gone from strength to strength ever since. There are separate fields for family use – with play areas and rope swings – and others for group bookings, ensuring nobody gets disturbed on site. Facilities run to a shower block and wash room, and as barbecues are allowed by the pitches in the camping fields (source any foodie bits in the pretty town of Bakewell, 10 minutes’ drive), firepits can be hired on site. Logs are sold from the small on-site shop, which – more importantly for the kids – also stocks tasty ice cream from a local farm. The site also sells woodfired pizzas, which should be handy if you fancy eating something more substantial.

From the manager: Hi Thankyou for your comments, we are going to put more signs up at the sink washing bins to try to discourage people dumping all their rubbish there instead of using the recycling bins. Our facilities are clean four times a day for a hour each time.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great choice of fields to pitch in.
Fri and Sat food vans and bar on site. Lovely new toilet and shower blocks.
Great location

Disliked Not enough facilities for the size of the site. Was not even half full but queues, no toilet roll.
Bins over flowing everywhere which attracted wasps.
No one patrolling the noise, parties ongoing until after 3am! Which lead to lots of dogs barking at the same time

From the manager: Hi Thankyou for your comments, we patrolled the site at 11pm when we do the final toilet and shower clean and there was no noise other than a bit of laughter. We are going to put more signs up to try and encourage more people to use the recycling rather than dumping it at the washing up bins. Toilet rolls are topped up four times a day when we clean all the facilities. It’s very unusual that people were queueing on a relatively quiet weekend when we have 12 showers and 12 toilets you must have just been unlucky.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Beautiful site with a very scenic view over Lathkill dale, it’s a huge site with lots of fields to choose from. Site allows you to choose your own pitch which was nice. It was quite busy, arriving about 7pm Friday evening, meaning a lot of the sheltered pitches were taken and those fields were busier but that would be expected. Very open/exposed due to its location but nothing can be done about the weather!

Food trucks and a bar available over the weekend which was nice. Pizza was good if you don’t mind waiting - mine was over an hour on a Saturday night but it was busy so again, expected.

Little Shop on site for essentials/treats

All in all, a very nice, safe feeling site.

Disliked Unfortunately, the facilities need to be cleaned more often when the site is busy - toilets were running out of paper quickly, sinks quite dirty, bins overflowing. Probably could do with a few more general waste bins dotted around the further end of the site as otherwise a bit of a trek down to reception.

Local attractions

Scenic walks are to be had along the namesake river in Lathkill Dale, where you can stride out towards Lathkill Head Cave (an hour and 20 minutes’ walk) or marvel at the clear springs at The Blue Waters near the peaceful village of Over Haddon (35 minutes). For a slightly longer ramble, Arbor Low Stone Circle and Gib Hill Barrow (90 minutes) reward with prehistoric monuments and ancient burial mounds. Combine your stroll around the verdant grounds at Chatsworth House with a guided tour of the mansion’s ornate rooms packed with priceless antiques, or take in the Elizabethan Walled Gardens at Haddon Hall (both 20 minutes’ drive) after you’ve admired the tapestry collection and medieval chapel. For an insight into Peak District heritage, visit the bijou Eyam Museum (also 20 minutes) in the famed ‘plague village’ to learn the story of the Bubonic Plague of 1346–52, or have a wander around the deserted remains of Magpie Mine (five minutes’ drive), which was the last working lead mine in Derbyshire and closed in 1958.
