Flagg View: The pitches

General

  • Peaceful location on a farm near Buxton, with Peak District views
  • A 25-minute drive to Chatsworth House; 40 minutes to Alton Towers
  • Grass site near the High Peak Trail; pubs within walking distance

Set on a secluded working farm with glorious views over Derbyshire hillsides, Flagg View is a no-frills camping site with just a handful of pitches and plenty of space for all. For lovers of bracing fresh air and outdoor adventures, this quiet spot is close to loads of activities in the Peak District National Park.

Yep, you can keep the family (and your canine pals) busy on moorland and hill walks to ancient stone circles and hill barrows. Other activities within a half-hour’s drive include kayaking and sailing on Tittesworth Reservoir, teeing off on several golf courses, or fishing.

Pick up supplies for your barbecue at handy supermarkets in Matlock (half an hour’s drive), although there’s no pressure to cook really, as several cosy inns offering real ales and classic pub menus are within walking distance.

A couple of local farm shops produce award-winning ice cream (great for bribing the kids to behave), where you can also pick up meat cuts to grill on the barbecue (bring your own gear).

This being a straightforward stop, there’s no hot water available on site, and basic amenities don’t stretch any further than chemical waste disposal.

Please note

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

This site has no on-site toilet and shower facilities.

As the site is on a septic tank, only eco-friendly green Aqua-Kem green sachets are allowed and can be bought onsite for £1.50 if needed.

This is one of best sites we have stayed on. It is a site with fresh water. WC waste electricity and gravel pitches. The owner Jack comes to welcome you and informs you of local interest, access to the cycleways which are less than a mile on quiet roads and about the local pubs and towns.
He noticed us walking back through the farm one day and made sure we were OK.
He appears to have made great effort in to providing a great quiet site including blocks to level the motorhome.

Local attractions

Valleys, lakes and moors are just waiting to be explored on foot or bike, with the Three Shires Head circular route (20 minutes’ drive) revealing waterfalls and rock pools for paddling. Serious cyclists can access the High Peak Trail in minutes, and if you didn’t bring the bikes, hire them at Parsley Hay (five minutes).

It’s worth a potter around cute Peak District towns like Bakewell with its lovely Wye riverside walks, and Buxton (both 15 minutes), where you can catch performances at the grand opera house. There’s plenty on offer for culture vultures too; Chatsworth House is packed with art treasures and its extensive grounds make a perfect picnic spot, while you can explore Tudor-era rooms at fortified Haddon Hall (both 25 minutes).

Top of the to-do list for kids may well be the thrill rides at Alton Towers (40 minutes), but if your children are younger, you might fancy an afternoon’s pirate-themed fun on gentle log flumes at Gulliver’s Kingdom or a cable-car ride up to the Heights of Abraham (both half an hour) outlook for cavern tours and fossil exhibitions.

Must see

  • Haddon Hall (6.2 miles)
  • Chatsworth (8.0 miles)
  • Sir Richard Arkwright's Masson Mills (11.9 miles)

  • Winster Market House (8.1 miles)
