The Devonshire Arms: Visitor image of grass pitches

General

  • Simple Peak District pitches behind a 16th-century village pub
  • A 10-minute drive to Castleton's caves and 15 minutes to Buxton
  • Pub open Thursday to Sunday for real ales and home-cooked food

Peak District hike followed by a well-earned pint? Splendid. All of this followed by a short toddle of a couple of minutes to your bed? Even more splendid. Such is the situation at The Devonshire Arms, where pitches have been set up just behind the 16th-century village inn in Peak Forest.

Footpaths lead directly from this site to the Pennine Bridleway for walks and bike rides, with the likes of Mam Tor, Speedwell Cavern and Blue John Cavern all within striking distance. There’s bike hire nearby too if you’re not able to bring your own wheels along.

This is a handy spot from which to explore Derbyshire by car too – it’s just off the A623 so there’s speedy enough access to places like Buxton (15 minutes’ drive) and Bakewell (20 minutes), to places like Chatsworth House or to the more remote corners of the Peak District National Park.

And at the end of the day? It’s back to the pub, where freshly cooked meals can be washed down with well-kept real ales in the cosy bar or out in the beer garden before you stroll back to your pitch. The pub’s dog friendly and open from Thursday to Sunday; on other days, maybe journey into Chapel-en-le-Frith (10 minutes’ drive) for supermarket supplies or takeaways.

This is a small site with simple facilities, but guests can use the wifi, and the toilets and wash basins in the pub are accessible 24 hours a day.

Please note

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Loved the fact this was a small camping site with a maximum of 4/5 tents. There was plenty of space to pitch and they even provided a static caravan with toilets and one shower which was perfect.
For the cost the site was absolutely spot on! The shower was beautifully hot and clean and a great facility after a long hike in the peaks, very much needed.
We ate at the pub and the food was absolutely delicious! I had the Chicken, Black Pudding and Stilton sauce with proper homemade chips and my friend had the Steak and Ale Pie with home made chips too and we both commented numerous times at how nice the food was. Really tasty and proper homecooked! Highly recommended. The staff were all really friendly too. Overall a great place to stay, excellent value for money and will be back again

    Disliked:

Our only small dislike was the ridiculously early wake up call at about 4am from the morning bird song and we are talking crows squawking like crazy but we stuck some ear plugs in and back to sleep we went - it won't stop us staying here again, we just know to wear ear plugs and all is great!

If you are a light sleeper, you may be aware of the road noise - there are quite a few trucks that pass throughout the night but that didn't bother us at all.

Communication prior to arrival was really informative and wasn’t prompted. It’s great not to have to ask questions and wait for a response.

The food in the pub was fab and served quickly

    Disliked:

The pitch up site says there are no toilets/showers. This may put other people off. We wasn’t bothered so it was a lovely surprise to learn that there is a static caravan with 2 toilets and a shower - well maintained too!

    There was nothing we disliked

    Disliked:

Noise. Traffic, large trucks start passing the site very early in the morning, empty going to a quarry they make a lot of noise.
People from the campsite next door climbing the wall to use this sites toilets. One drunk couple falling over my tent going the other way.

The toilets could do with a sign on the door when it was being occupied also descent locks on the doors too. Good that they were open all night. Would stay again if passing that way again.

Local attractions

Keen to give your boots or bike a workout? You’ve come to the right spot – from the pub it’s an easy jaunt to Mam Tor (10 minutes’ drive), the Monsal Trail (15 minutes) or Stanage Edge (25 minutes). You might like to stop in for a dip at the open-air pool in Hathersage (20 minutes) at the end too.

There are many fine views to see around here – and some equally great sights to be seen below ground if you head to Poole’s Cavern & Buxton Country Park (15 minutes) or up to Castleton (10 minutes) to visit Speedwell Cavern and Blue John Cavern. Back up on the surface, get a hit of history at Eyam (10 minutes), the village that sealed itself off from the world during the Bubonic Plague of 1665.

Away from all the rural attractions, take some town time at the opera house, gallery and museum in Buxton (15 minutes) or fuelling up at the pudding shops of Bakewell (20 minutes). The excellent Chatsworth House (25 minutes) should be on the schedule too, for the farm shop and playground as well as the house and gardens.

Must see

  • Lyme Park & Gardens (NT) (9.5 miles)
  • Haddon Hall (10.5 miles)
  • Chatsworth (10.8 miles)
