Five Acres Farm Campsite: views from the camp

General

  • Rural and peaceful Peak District farm with animals including llamas
  • A five-minute drive to cycling on the Monsal Trail and 15 to Bakewell
  • Tideswell, Castleton, Bamford and Chatsworth all within 20 minutes

Who needs to organise a hol all the way over in South America when you can linger beside the llamas at Five Acres Farm Campsite in Derbyshire? This park full of furry, friendly animals may not be within spitting distance of treks to Macchu Picchu, but it does have Peak District paths for hikes and cycle rides on the Monsal Trail starting from a five-minute drive away.

The views are also nothing short of lush: the site is surrounded by wide open fields, and walks can be had without needing to get in the car towards the nearest settlement of Wardlow and up to Hay Cop (20 minutes on foot) for a look over the local landscape.

If you’d rather dig into dessert than dawdle, the tarts and puddings of countrywide renown are at Bakewell, the only market town in the Peak District and a 15-minute drive from the site. Not too stuffed to think about stocking up on supplies after sampling the wares? Food stores are here too and other urban areas worth a wander for chocolate-box houses and cutesy craft shops include Tideswell, Castleton, Bamford and Chatsworth, all within 20 minutes.

Plenty other activities can be had in these towns too: Tideswell’s got the impressive St John the Baptist Church to have a gander at; Castleton’s known for its caverns where the famed Blue John stone is mined, and Bamford has three different dams to trek around. Chatsworth, meanwhile, is home to swanky stately mansion Chatsworth House – yep, that one mentioned in Pride and Prejudice and regularly voted Britain's top country house.

Wonderful campsite with friendly welcoming owner Rachel. Well managed facilities and clean toilets. Everything you could need for a back to basics camping holiday. Beautiful views, nice and quiet and the cherry on top was the lovely resident farm animals. Our favourite was Maisey the Shetland pony. We will definitely visit five acres again and recommend to others :) thank you for a lovely stay

Quiet site, no loud noise in the evening (as not many people decide to camp in October!).
Clean facilities, helpful staff that recommended a lovely market that was on nearby and information signs on site (things to do, places to eat etc).
    Amazing views from the site.

    Disliked:

The only (slightly) bad thing was that we arrived in the evening and the turning/sign for the site was difficult to see.
Satnav doesn't take you straight there so we did drive past it initially.
A lot easier to see the turning in the daylight.

Quiet site, lots of animals around like lamas, ponies, sheep's, cows, hens. Location is great as middle of pick district.
Allowed campfire, but take your own logs as there cost 17.00 😲
Facilities clean and good, except showers.

    Disliked:

Showers was my nightmare. Mouldy, lots of bugs inside. When you press button first time cold water splash you all over. There is no other option to avoid this. If you don't won't to wet your hair, must wear a cap. Button must be pressed every 10 second as water stops. Pressure of water is so high that sometimes hurt if water go to your eye or other sensitive place.
No playground for kids, it will be good idea in the future for owners think about that.

Facilities very clean and the site was well kept. Being able to park next to our tent was very useful. Easy access to lots of local hiking routes. The own came to check we were ok and offer any advice which was nice.

    Disliked:

Entire site bordered by a barbed wire fence, understandable due to animals in the surrounding fields, but not very family friendly.

Showers, toilet and pot washing facilities all clean, well maintained and well lit. In a lovely location, nice and quiet and good views.

    Disliked:

The only negative I can find is that the toilet blocks lights stay on all night and were quite bright making it harder to fall asleep. But that is probably for health and safety reasons.
