  • Rural and peaceful Peak District farm with animals including llamas
  • A five-minute drive to cycling on the Monsal Trail and 15 to Bakewell
  • Tideswell, Castleton, Bamford and Chatsworth all within 20 minutes
Who needs to organise a hol all the way over in South America when you can linger beside the llamas at Five Acres Farm Campsite in Derbyshire? This park full of furry, friendly animals may not be within spitting distance of treks to Macchu Picchu, but it does have Peak District paths for hikes and cycle rides on the Monsal Trail starting from a five-minute drive away. The views are also nothing short of lush: the site is surrounded by wide open fields, and walks can be had without needing to get in the car towards the nearest settlement of Wardlow and up to Hay Cop (20 minutes on foot) for a look over the local landscape. If you’d rather dig into dessert than dawdle, the tarts and puddings of countrywide renown are at Bakewell, the only market town in the Peak District and a 15-minute drive from the site. Not too stuffed to think about stocking up on supplies after sampling the wares? Food stores are here too and other urban areas worth a wander for chocolate-box houses and cutesy craft shops include Tideswell, Castleton, Bamford and Chatsworth, all within 20 minutes. Plenty other activities can be had in these towns too: Tideswell’s got the impressive St John the Baptist Church to have a gander at; Castleton’s known for its caverns where the famed Blue John stone is mined, and Bamford has three different dams to trek around. Chatsworth, meanwhile, is home to swanky stately mansion Chatsworth House – yep, that one mentioned in Pride and Prejudice and regularly voted Britain's top country house.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked My first time solo camping. Arrived around 12.30 pm found a place to pitch. Set up my tent and then went for a 10 mile hike.
The facilities were really nice although I didn't use the shower as I was only there for one night. It was lovely cooking my meal, sitting outside, wish I brought my fire pit. Lovely nights sleep 😴 listening to the cows and sheep. A few people turned up over the course of the evening. The lady came around to issue camping ticket.
Would recommend the site and I will be back.

Primitive grass tent campsite

Liked Great facilities
Clean site and facilities
Well signposted
Easy to get to
Dog friendly (all dogs were well behaved and tethered/under control)
Easy to access more areas in the Peak District.

Disliked Although there’s a ‘quiet time after 10pm’ there were still quite a few with loud voices after this time, I know it’s camping in the middle of nowhere but it would have been nice if they were a little quieter.

Not sure how they can do it but potentially policing the amount of alcohol may be worth looking into - I went toilet at 11:30pm, there were a few older men who were ‘p*ssed as f*ck’ and one of them had a huge cut on his face that was pouring blood, although it’s a family site I’m aware that there may have still been kids that could have seen this.

Local attractions

If guests do decide to give pedal pushing on the 8.5-mile and traffic-free Monsal Trail a go, they can use it to reach Bakewell, stopping at Monsal Head on their merry way for views of the River Wye and the Headstone Viaduct. For leisurely walks with typically stunning Peak District views, try Mam Tor or the Ladybower Reservoir (both around 20 minutes’ drive away); hardier hikers can take on an expedition to Kinder Scout, 40 minutes' drive away, to scale the national park’s highest point. Or, if you’d rather do your sightseeing underground, boat trips through Speedwell Cavern are 20 minutes away...
