  • Peaceful park near the Peak District
  • Easy access to Derby and Nottingham; two pubs five minutes' walk away
  • New toilet and shower block kept to immaculate standards
What a peaceful park this is for Peak District hols – on 11 acres of quiet woodland near the national park and set deep in the Derbyshire countryside with picnic areas peppered all around. And what a pleasing park this is for those who insist on amenities being immaculate and up to date – the toilet and shower block comes with disabled access, baby changing and showers with hot and cold water, and is kept in tiptop condition at all times by the friendly site team. Riddings Wood Holiday Park is a rural park but with easy access to urban centres like Derby and Nottingham as well as to the hikes, bike rides and canters of the Peak District. (If you're a bit bamboozled as to what to do first, have a look at the tourist info point in reception or ask the team for tips.) Campfires are allowed if you need a bit of warming upon return. And finally, what a pint-friendly site Riddings Wood is too – the only thatched-roof pub in Derbyshire, Moulders Arms (aka The Thack), is a short stroll away; and the Seven Stars, a community pub, is just across the road. Cheers…

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: The small safe campsite The lovely play area very close to where we pitched The clean well maintained toilet and shower block The distance to beautiful woods (literally next door)

Disliked: It was a long walk to the toilets but that's the only negative

Lodge (hot tub)

Liked: The woodland area was lovely and calming. the cabin was spacious for a log cabin, and plenty of room! Staff were friendly and helpful. The bed was very comfortable! The hot tub was an excellent extra in which we used a lot in our stay!

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Clean and friendly. New toilet facilities up at the top of the site very good. Open site, well cared for.

Disliked: Toilet facilities quite a long walk up hill as the middle ones were not open, it said due to upgrading. Could do with pitches levelling off a bit.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked: Location, condition of site, the actual pitch we got, the price.

Disliked: Needed better WiFi, if there was WiFi we couldn't find it. Needs an on-site shop (they do sell a few bits like ice creams and kindling in reception).

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Nice site and grass kept cut short. Toilet and shower block nice - 7 toilets and four showers in the ladies. Looks like a disabled unit next to gents.

Disliked: Site is on a slope and some large gravel stones kept nearly falling over. Did have a circular hole with grass so not obvious and found it the hard way. Reported to staff but not resolved during our stay. Maybe they didn’t want to disturb us?!

Lodge (hot tub)

Liked: Everything about the site was amazing, the lodge was very clean, had everything useful to a degree. Loved the communal firepit. The hottub was our key feature along with Winston the local farm cat. Staff was extremely helpful and friendly ( the cleaning ladies have my full gratitude for having conversations with me)

Disliked: Wasn't any cutting knives present ( will remember to pack one next time) Some people didn't adhere too the quite time policy which left our last night a restless one. ( won't stop us rebooking)

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: The site is only 50 minutes from home but provided a beautiful space for us to chill out for a few days. Wonderful walks all around. The site was clean and well organised with everything needed for personal cleanliness & disposal of rubbish or effluent. Definitely a place I would visit again, to explore more.

Disliked: I did not have any dislikes. I didn't need WiFi so can't comment - phone worked ok. I didn't need shops so the quiet location wasn't a problem.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: Toilets clean, (cleaned daily), good size pitches, quiet and peaceful. Very friendly and helpful staff. Asked to move to a different pitch and staff obliged to let us.

Disliked: Moved to a different pitch as too much slope to level caravan up

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked: New toilet and shower block. Very clean. Well laid out site next to large wooded area great for walking the dog

Disliked: Only stayed for 2 nights, went for a peaceful relaxing break. But had a whole day of noisy lawn mowing which ruined the stay for us

Local attractions

To the Peak! The Peak District National Park is but a short drive from Riddings Wood Holiday Park, and has a bit of what you fancy for all ages and inclinations. If you're in the area to hike, there are more Peak District trails than you can shake a (walking) stick at, from the shorter treks of seven or so miles around the upper Dove Valley and Pilsbury Castle, to long-distance paths like the Limestone Way (46 miles), the Derwent Valley Heritage Way (55 miles) or the Peak District parts of the Pennine Way, running for 268 miles from the northern Peak District to just inside the Scottish border. Climbers and cavers also delve into all things Peak: thousands of routes for all abilities are all over the park for climbers, including Burcen Edge for beginners and more hair-raising ascents like Debauchery and Mad Dogs and Englishmen for the severely experienced. If you're of a cavernous disposition, make your way to the village of Castleton and its four show caves, Blue John, the Peak, Treak Cliff and Speedwell Cavern with underground boat trip. Matlock Bath has a cable car to take adventurers to limestone caverns The Heights of Abraham, and Poole's Cavern near Buxton has vast caves to explore before an above-surface walk around Buxton Country Park. Other attractions like Chatsworth House and Gardens and the old Crich Tramway are to hand for the historically-minded, alongside old Peak District villages and market towns for tearooms, restaurants, family pubs and lots of shopping: try Buxton, Ashbourne and Bakewell to start you off. Back at Matlock Bath, let the kids go large at the rides and attractions of theme and play park Gullivers Kingdom for ages two to 13; the 600-acre Matlock Farm Park nearby should keep them busy for a bit too.
