  • Peaceful park near the Peak District
  • Easy access to Derby and Nottingham; two pubs five minutes' walk away
  • New toilet and shower block kept to immaculate standards
What a peaceful park this is for Peak District hols – on 11 acres of quiet woodland near the national park and set deep in the Derbyshire countryside with picnic areas peppered all around. And what a pleasing park this is for those who insist on amenities being immaculate and up to date – the toilet and shower block comes with disabled access, baby changing and showers with hot and cold water, and is kept in tiptop condition at all times by the friendly site team. Riddings Wood Holiday Park is a rural park but with easy access to urban centres like Derby and Nottingham as well as to the hikes, bike rides and canters of the Peak District. (If you're a bit bamboozled as to what to do first, have a look at the tourist info point in reception or ask the team for tips.) Campfires are allowed if you need a bit of warming upon return. And finally, what a pint-friendly site Riddings Wood is too – the only thatched-roof pub in Derbyshire, Moulders Arms (aka The Thack), is a short stroll away; and the Seven Stars, a community pub, is just across the road. Cheers…

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked Friendly staff, nice setting.

Disliked Kids screaming at 1am people arguing, central toilet block closed had to use toilet block at the top of the site quite a walk when you’re disabled. Road surface was very pot holed. Not a lot for older kids to do.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Great to have a park there for the kids

Disliked Long walk to the toilet/shower block. Not sure why the block half way wasn’t in use.
Toilets/showers could probably do with a second clean late afternoon too.
The lady in the office on one occasion was rude and not polite.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Play park, great walk locations and welcome from lady in the office.

Disliked 23:00 is far too late for enforcing a common courtesy silence rule. It entices the sort of people to drink heavily around their campfire and swear profusely, which is not acceptable for a family campsite. Enforcing a 22:00 hours silence would attract the right guests who would want to come back again. I had to shout at people to have some respect for families at 23:30 because I couldn't find the paper with a number.

Our electric pitch was also on a slight slope. Not major but looking around, you can see a lot of the pitches were on slopes. You take a gamble that you get a decent one.

The state of the toilet facility was shocking. The first day (and I mean the whole day) a faeces floor covered cubicle was left in that state and only addressed the by the next morning. Please clean your toilets and showers on a regular basis. Kids have accidents (I hope it was a kid) but to leave it for a cleaner once every 24 hours is unacceptable.

We are sorry that you did not enjoy your stay and will not return in the future.

We do walk round during the evenings and are sorry you experienced noise, this is why we have the out of hours number, we encourage all guests to use this number if other guests are impacting on their stay.

Electric hardstanding and grass touring pitch

Liked We stayed one night here in our motorhome. The gravel pitch we were given was spacious and we had plenty of space to sit outside our van. We enjoyed a peaceful night's sleep. The showers were nice and hot with good pressure.
We don't have children but there was a large play area and it looked very good for entertaining them!

Disliked The toilet and shower block was busy. Both my husband I managed to go straight into a shower cubicle and shower fine. But the sink area outside was cramped and it was a squash in the ladies area . Mum's took their children into clean their teeth, 3 to a sink!
The pitch was on a slope and although we improved this with our chocks it did mean it was a fairly big drop from our exit door to the ground. We were glad this was only for one night.

Local attractions

To the Peak! The Peak District National Park is but a short drive from Riddings Wood Holiday Park, and has a bit of what you fancy for all ages and inclinations. If you're in the area to hike, there are more Peak District trails than you can shake a (walking) stick at, from the shorter treks of seven or so miles around the upper Dove Valley and Pilsbury Castle, to long-distance paths like the Limestone Way (46 miles), the Derwent Valley Heritage Way (55 miles) or the Peak District parts of the Pennine Way, running for 268 miles from the northern Peak District to just inside the Scottish border. Climbers and cavers also delve into all things Peak: thousands of routes for all abilities are all over the park for climbers, including Burcen Edge for beginners and more hair-raising ascents like Debauchery and Mad Dogs and Englishmen for the severely experienced. If you're of a cavernous disposition, make your way to the village of Castleton and its four show caves, Blue John, the Peak, Treak Cliff and Speedwell Cavern with underground boat trip. Matlock Bath has a cable car to take adventurers to limestone caverns The Heights of Abraham, and Poole's Cavern near Buxton has vast caves to explore before an above-surface walk around Buxton Country Park. Other attractions like Chatsworth House and Gardens and the old Crich Tramway are to hand for the historically-minded, alongside old Peak District villages and market towns for tearooms, restaurants, family pubs and lots of shopping: try Buxton, Ashbourne and Bakewell to start you off. Back at Matlock Bath, let the kids go large at the rides and attractions of theme and play park Gullivers Kingdom for ages two to 13; the 600-acre Matlock Farm Park nearby should keep them busy for a bit too.
