General

  • Peaceful park near the Peak District
  • Easy access to Derby and N'ham; two pubs five minutes' walk away
  • New toilet and shower block kept to immaculate standards

What a peaceful park this is for Peak District hols – on 11 acres of quiet woodland near the national park and set deep in the Derbyshire countryside with picnic areas peppered all around.

And what a placid park this is for those who insist on amenities being immaculate and up to date – the toilet and shower block comes with disabled access, baby changing, launderette, showers and hot and cold water, and is kept in tiptop condition at all times by the friendly site team.

Riddings Wood Caravan and Camping Site is a rural park but with easy access to urban centres like Derby and Nottingham as well as to the hikes, bike rides and canters of the Peak District. (If you're a bit bamboozled as to what to do first, take a peek in the tourist info point in reception or ask the team for tips.)

Free wifi is available throughout the park and campfires are allowed.

And finally, what a pint-friendly site Riddings Wood is too – the only thatched roof pub in Derbyshire, Moulders Arms aka The Thack, is a short stroll away; and the Seven Stars, a community pub, is just across the road. Cheers.

Please note

A charge of £1 applies for the use of shower.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act.

Campsite was easy to find and although reception wasn't manned when we arrived, we were still able to contact the warden who was very helpful over the phone.
We got to choose our spot which was helpful as we have younger children we placed ourselves as close to the toilet block as possible.
The toilet/shower block was extremely clean and tidy, also very warm which was nice when having to shoot to the loo in the middle of the night!
We had no issues whilst camping here and although staff were at hand on site the whole time there was not need for us to contact them regarding anything.
Grass was well maintained as we noticed one member of staff hard at work cutting it and clearing all clippings, which always helps as it wasn't being trodden trough the tent! We had a little difficulty staying logged onto the Wi-Fi however plenty of 4g and 3g around so didn't bother us too much
The play area for the children was superb, even when wet the kids were enjoying it!
Campsite is close to lots of things to do, we took a trip to the heights of Abraham and the Tram Museum. Both good days out.
Other campers were very respectful of quiet times and we were not disturbed by them. The only noise at night was coming from the owls!
Value for money at this times of season and I would return in the peak season as well
I would recommend this place highly.
    Thank you

The bins being emptied at 6:30am, however they need to be done at some point and we had placed ourselves close to them.

Great site. The fella that greeted me was friendly and helpful, and the toilet/shower block was probably one of the best I've ever experienced. and certainly the cleanest, it was absolutely spotless!

Local attractions

To the Peak! The Peak District National Park is but a short drive from Riddings Wood Caravan and Camping Park, and has a bit of what you fancy for all ages and inclinations.

If you're in the area to hike, there are more Peak District trails than you can shake a (walking) stick at, from the shorter treks of seven or so miles around the upper Dove Valley and Pilsbury Castle, to long-distance paths like the Limestone Way (46 miles), the Derwent Valley Heritage Way (55 miles) or the Peak District parts of the Pennine Way, running for 268 miles from the northern Peak District to just inside the Scottish border.

Climbers and cavers also delve into all things Peak: thousands of routes for all abilities are all over the park for climbers, including Burcen Edge for beginners and more hair-raising ascents like Debauchery and Mad Dogs and Englishmen for the severely experienced.

If you're of a cavernous disposition, make your way to the village of Castleton and its four show caves, Blue John, the Peak, Treak Cliff and Speedwell Cavern with underground boat trip. Matlock Bath has a cable car to take adventurers to limestone caverns The Heights of Abraham, and Poole's Cavern near Buxton has vast caves to explore before an above-surface walk around Buxton Country Park.

Other attractions like Chatsworth House and Gardens and the old Crich Tramway are to hand for the historically-minded, alongside old Peak District villages and market towns for tearooms, restaurants, family pubs and lots of shopping: try Buxton, Ashbourne and Bakewell to start you off.

Back at Matlock Bath, let the kids go large at the rides and attractions of theme and play park Gullivers Kingdom for ages two to 13; the 600-acre Matlock Farm Park nearby should keep them busy for a bit too.
