  • Peaceful park near the Peak District
  • Easy access to Derby and Nottingham; two pubs five minutes' walk away
  • New toilet and shower block kept to immaculate standards
What a peaceful park this is for Peak District hols – on 11 acres of quiet woodland near the national park and set deep in the Derbyshire countryside with picnic areas peppered all around. And what a pleasing park this is for those who insist on amenities being immaculate and up to date – the toilet and shower block comes with disabled access, baby changing and showers with hot and cold water, and is kept in tiptop condition at all times by the friendly site team. Riddings Wood Holiday Park is a rural park but with easy access to urban centres like Derby and Nottingham as well as to the hikes, bike rides and canters of the Peak District. (If you're a bit bamboozled as to what to do first, have a look at the tourist info point in reception or ask the team for tips.) Campfires are allowed if you need a bit of warming upon return. And finally, what a pint-friendly site Riddings Wood is too – the only thatched-roof pub in Derbyshire, Moulders Arms (aka The Thack), is a short stroll away; and the Seven Stars, a community pub, is just across the road. Cheers…

What customers say

This campsite offers spacious, clean pitches and friendly, helpful staff. Guests praised the new, well-maintained toilet and shower facilities. The location is ideal for exploring local walks and pubs. While generally positive, some noted sloping pitches and a need for more frequent toilet cleaning during peak times. Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The play park being right near our tent pitch, it helped with packing and putting up the tent.
The lady went over the best spots to pitch up regarding young kids she couldn’t be more helpful.

Disliked The hill hike to the toilet but it is what it is.

Woodland Premium lodge (hot tub, pet friendly)

Liked Campsite was great, child friendly with a playground. It was a good base for exploring the Peak District.

Disliked There weren’t any cleaning materials in the lodge which I thought was odd/ should have been mentioned. If they didn’t want to provide the soap then fine, but I would have expected a cloth to be able to clean the dishes with. There weren’t any oven trays either.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us, we welcome all feedback.

We are glad to see that your family enjoyed their stay on site and the surrounding areas which are beautiful. We hope we can welcome you back in the future.

We do not provide toiletries on site, this is something we can look at for the future. the kitchen does come with a washing up sponge and scourer for washing the dishes. The grill pan does double up as baking tray.

Thank you for your feedback we will look at the points you raised to improve our guest experience.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Lovely views, excellent showers and toilets. Decent price for facilities offered.

Disliked Not made to feel very welcome on arrival and beyond; more interested in enforcing rules than wishing us and hoping we have a good weekend.

Paul M. 1 review

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked The weather, the food vans in the evening

Disliked The main negatives for us were the somewhat over-officious approach of some of the staff and the unpleasant smell from the chemical toilet disposal area.

In particular, a member of staff came to our pitch at 10.01pm and told us to be quiet and to “have some respect for the other campers” because we were apparently making too much noise beyond the curfew. This felt unnecessarily confrontational, particularly as the music curfew was 10.00pm but the campsite’s quiet curfew was not until 11.00pm. We felt the situation could have been handled in a much friendlier and more proportionate way.

There was also a noticeable and unpleasant smell coming from the chemical toilet disposal facilities, which affected the surrounding area.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us, we welcome all feedback.

We are sorry to see that you will not be staying with us again.

when we spoke to you regarding the excessive noise, we were responding to many complaints from fellow campers who had experienced excessive noise through the evening from yourselves and up to 10.00pm. Our quiet time starts at 10pm and we do allow quiet chatter that does not impact on others until 11pm. We spoke to you at just turned 10pm as other campers may have got involved and we wanted to prevent this situation occurring. We are sorry if when we spoke to you, you found this offensive.

Thank you for your feedback and we wish you well in your future travels.

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Enjoyed our stay and would come again. Clean toilet block. Great little shop. Nice park and woodland area for children.

Disliked The website needs to state no bikes or scooters allowed on site so people don’t fetch them. Cars drive round too fast. Pitch’s need marking out properly. The person who had pitch before us was too far over which made our pitch really tight.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Playground

Disliked Thought there'd be usable woods with fire pits as advertised on the campsite. Pitch was not flat which meant limited choice for non electric.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to review your stay with us, we welcome all feedback.

We are sorry to see you will not return in the future.

We are also sorry that you were unable to use a fire pit whilst you were with us, as you can appreciate the grounds and woods surrounding are tinder dry. We took note of the Alert sent by our government on behalf of the fire service not to allow any charcoal BBQs or open flames which could cause fire. The governments alert over road our website and has been accepted by most guests as a sensible response to the prevention of fire taking over the site and surrounding woodlands.

We will continue to risk assess the use of fire pits.

Thank you for your feedback we wish you well in your future travels.

Local attractions

To the Peak! The Peak District National Park is but a short drive from Riddings Wood Holiday Park, and has a bit of what you fancy for all ages and inclinations. If you're in the area to hike, there are more Peak District trails than you can shake a (walking) stick at, from the shorter treks of seven or so miles around the upper Dove Valley and Pilsbury Castle, to long-distance paths like the Limestone Way (46 miles), the Derwent Valley Heritage Way (55 miles) or the Peak District parts of the Pennine Way, running for 268 miles from the northern Peak District to just inside the Scottish border. Climbers and cavers also delve into all things Peak: thousands of routes for all abilities are all over the park for climbers, including Burcen Edge for beginners and more hair-raising ascents like Debauchery and Mad Dogs and Englishmen for the severely experienced. If you're of a cavernous disposition, make your way to the village of Castleton and its four show caves, Blue John, the Peak, Treak Cliff and Speedwell Cavern with underground boat trip. Matlock Bath has a cable car to take adventurers to limestone caverns The Heights of Abraham, and Poole's Cavern near Buxton has vast caves to explore before an above-surface walk around Buxton Country Park. Other attractions like Chatsworth House and Gardens and the old Crich Tramway are to hand for the historically-minded, alongside old Peak District villages and market towns for tearooms, restaurants, family pubs and lots of shopping: try Buxton, Ashbourne and Bakewell to start you off. Back at Matlock Bath, let the kids go large at the rides and attractions of theme and play park Gullivers Kingdom for ages two to 13; the 600-acre Matlock Farm Park nearby should keep them busy for a bit too.
