  • Peaceful park near the Peak District
  • Easy access to Derby and Nottingham; two pubs five minutes' walk away
  • New toilet and shower block kept to immaculate standards
What a peaceful park this is for Peak District hols – on 11 acres of quiet woodland near the national park and set deep in the Derbyshire countryside with picnic areas peppered all around. And what a pleasing park this is for those who insist on amenities being immaculate and up to date – the toilet and shower block comes with disabled access, baby changing and showers with hot and cold water, and is kept in tiptop condition at all times by the friendly site team. Riddings Wood Holiday Park is a rural park but with easy access to urban centres like Derby and Nottingham as well as to the hikes, bike rides and canters of the Peak District. (If you're a bit bamboozled as to what to do first, have a look at the tourist info point in reception or ask the team for tips.) Campfires are allowed if you need a bit of warming upon return. And finally, what a pint-friendly site Riddings Wood is too – the only thatched-roof pub in Derbyshire, Moulders Arms (aka The Thack), is a short stroll away; and the Seven Stars, a community pub, is just across the road. Cheers…

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Had a 2 night stay at Riddings Wood on the none electric field. As the first night was Saturday there was a lot of children on the field, but was quite shocked that by 10 o'clock the children all disappeared back to their tents and it was very quiet.Found it very peaceful and relaxing there! The Manager came round on both nights checking we had no problems which we thought was very good.

Disliked The none electric field was right at the back of the campsite so was quite a way to carry our water butts being in our late 60's.

Great little lodges, spotlessly clean, staff excellent would reccomend

New toilet block was amazing. Extremely clean too

Disliked Noisy on the camping field in the evening due to 3 families being together, bit not the iotes fault!
Quite a hill to walk to the toilet block from bottom of the field, but only due to being g so hot and me unfit!

Electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked Nice clean facilities.

Disliked Upon arrival was greeted by a lady who made me feel quite unwelcome - pitch up had double booked my booking (not my fault) and she wasn't happy about that. Then told me exactly how I was allowed to pitch my tent, and said the site manager would come over to check that it was done properly.

Luckily had an electric pitch which was at the top of the site so close to the facilities, if we were on a non-electric pitch it would have been a long walk. They were also quite small if the site had been fully booked. Pitches weren't marked out with lines or fencing, but the site manager did come over to tell me how much of the space I could use and check how I was pitching my tent.

The site page on pitch up also states flat pitches, which would be true if you were on the non-electric field at the bottom of the hill. All electric pitches are on a hill. Not an issue, just not what's advertised.

Overall it was a nice stay, but the lack of freedom to pitch how I'd like to, and the check-ins from the site manager (which I've never experienced in any other campsite) made this a less recommendable site than others I've been to.

From the manager: Good afternoon thank you for taking the time to give us your feedback.

We are sorry if check in was not a good experience for you this was not our intention.

We are going to mark our pitches this is in hand until there are clear boundaries between pitches we are aiming to pitch all the tents as they arrive and are giving customers clear direction on where to pitch because we have had previous feedback regarding tents pitching where they like and not leaving enough space for others sorry if the pitching instructions made you feel unwelcome.

We had a lovely stay, clean facilities and very friendly staff.

Non-electric grass tent or trailer tent pitch

Liked This campsite has been placed in a special location, there are many different towns to visit and explore whilst amenities are available nearby. The campsite is well kept and very friendly. The campsite managers couldn’t be more helpful or and checked we had everything we needed during our stay so it would be really enjoyable. Great for walking dogs and they’re clearly welcome.

Disliked It would be great if there could be a second toilet block for use when the campsite is busier. We stayed during the week and enjoyed the clean facilities . However when it got much busier at the weekend, it would’ve been better and easier to have a nearer block to rely on. Practically we didn’t have a problem and had access throughout our stay so it’s just a suggestion for improvement.

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

We stayed here because it is close to family we had come…

Fully-serviced hardstanding touring pitch

Liked We stayed here because it is close to family we had come to visit. The site was clean and well kept. It was really busy, but still very quiet at night. Check in was quick and easy and the man on reception was helpful. Lots of CCTV around the site for security. Good 4G signal at the site.

Disliked The road around the site could do with some repairs, the security gate was broken.

From the manager: Thankyou for your review. We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay with us. Apologies regarding the barrier, this is being repaired today. We hope to see you again soon.

Local attractions

To the Peak! The Peak District National Park is but a short drive from Riddings Wood Holiday Park, and has a bit of what you fancy for all ages and inclinations. If you're in the area to hike, there are more Peak District trails than you can shake a (walking) stick at, from the shorter treks of seven or so miles around the upper Dove Valley and Pilsbury Castle, to long-distance paths like the Limestone Way (46 miles), the Derwent Valley Heritage Way (55 miles) or the Peak District parts of the Pennine Way, running for 268 miles from the northern Peak District to just inside the Scottish border. Climbers and cavers also delve into all things Peak: thousands of routes for all abilities are all over the park for climbers, including Burcen Edge for beginners and more hair-raising ascents like Debauchery and Mad Dogs and Englishmen for the severely experienced. If you're of a cavernous disposition, make your way to the village of Castleton and its four show caves, Blue John, the Peak, Treak Cliff and Speedwell Cavern with underground boat trip. Matlock Bath has a cable car to take adventurers to limestone caverns The Heights of Abraham, and Poole's Cavern near Buxton has vast caves to explore before an above-surface walk around Buxton Country Park. Other attractions like Chatsworth House and Gardens and the old Crich Tramway are to hand for the historically-minded, alongside old Peak District villages and market towns for tearooms, restaurants, family pubs and lots of shopping: try Buxton, Ashbourne and Bakewell to start you off. Back at Matlock Bath, let the kids go large at the rides and attractions of theme and play park Gullivers Kingdom for ages two to 13; the 600-acre Matlock Farm Park nearby should keep them busy for a bit too.
