Riddings Wood Holiday Park: Hot tub area

General

  • Peaceful park near the Peak District
  • Easy access to Derby and Nottingham; two pubs five minutes' walk away
  • New toilet and shower block kept to immaculate standards

What a peaceful park this is for Peak District hols – on 11 acres of quiet woodland near the national park and set deep in the Derbyshire countryside with picnic areas peppered all around.

And what a pleasing park this is for those who insist on amenities being immaculate and up to date – the toilet and shower block comes with disabled access, baby changing, launderette and showers with hot and cold water, and is kept in tiptop condition at all times by the friendly site team.

Riddings Wood Holiday Park is a rural park but with easy access to urban centres like Derby and Nottingham as well as to the hikes, bike rides and canters of the Peak District. (If you're a bit bamboozled as to what to do first, have a look at the tourist info point in reception or ask the team for tips.) Campfires are allowed if you need a bit of warming upon return.

And finally, what a pint-friendly site Riddings Wood is too – the only thatched-roof pub in Derbyshire, Moulders Arms (aka The Thack), is a short stroll away; and the Seven Stars, a community pub, is just across the road. Cheers…

A well placed site with so much potential.24/01/2023

We went to this site despite some of the reviews. The staff were friendly and helpful. We liked the size of pitches. The layout of the site. The situation, in easy walking distance to the pub and takeaways albeit takeaways deliver to the site. We liked the fact that the site is set in between a line of trees and makes it very pretty, very quiet and with a lot of wildlife. The situation of the facilities are good and are set in a central position. The security of the site is good having electronic security gates. If you have kids there is what looks like a great play area and a large field at the bottom of the site. The serviced pitches which are level, a good size and well maintained. The 16amp electricity which was included in the price throughout our stay. And finally the competitive price although this is tempered by the things we didn’t like.

    Disliked:

We disliked the non-serviced pitches that we were pitched on, albeit they have 16amp electric. The pitches are very worn and the significant slope, which goes in several directions, makes it very difficult to level up (we were in a small motorhome). Although described as hard standing they were quite muddy and not very well defined (unlike the PitchUp site photo which was taken some time ago). We could see that work had been carried out to the serviced pitches and these were of a good standard, level and well maintained (we would choose these next time). Now the toilets and showers have received much discussion by reviewers. In terms of size, layout, range of facilities and location, these are generally good and we have been to music festivals and they don’t stoop to those levels. However for a campsite for families the level of maintenance and cleanliness is poor. In the mens’ there was a shower not working and had clearly not been working for a while. The floor, that has been mentioned in previous reviews, was of a temporary nature and had been laid over the original floor but doesn’t go right to the edges. It was level though. The toilets are not clean and have clearly not been cleaned regularly and properly for a while, however they were usable. The showers were well used and again have not been properly cleaned for a while, again these were still usable. However we could see why this would put people off and be a major point of discussion. It is a shame as this site has so much potential and although it would take a bit of investment of both money and time, all the issues are fixable and recoverable. We have stayed on similar sites where they have resolved these types of issues and challenges. Whilst we may stay here again, we couldn’t recommend it to friends without outlining the issues.

Pitches were flat and spacious . The one we stayed at was level but some further down were quite slanted so definitely needed levelling blocks. showers and toilets were clean and warm .

The washing machine worked but the dryer door had broken and there was no sign on it warning about it so we were left with wet washing

Local attractions

To the Peak! The Peak District National Park is but a short drive from Riddings Wood Holiday Park, and has a bit of what you fancy for all ages and inclinations.

If you're in the area to hike, there are more Peak District trails than you can shake a (walking) stick at, from the shorter treks of seven or so miles around the upper Dove Valley and Pilsbury Castle, to long-distance paths like the Limestone Way (46 miles), the Derwent Valley Heritage Way (55 miles) or the Peak District parts of the Pennine Way, running for 268 miles from the northern Peak District to just inside the Scottish border.

Climbers and cavers also delve into all things Peak: thousands of routes for all abilities are all over the park for climbers, including Burcen Edge for beginners and more hair-raising ascents like Debauchery and Mad Dogs and Englishmen for the severely experienced.

If you're of a cavernous disposition, make your way to the village of Castleton and its four show caves, Blue John, the Peak, Treak Cliff and Speedwell Cavern with underground boat trip. Matlock Bath has a cable car to take adventurers to limestone caverns The Heights of Abraham, and Poole's Cavern near Buxton has vast caves to explore before an above-surface walk around Buxton Country Park.

Other attractions like Chatsworth House and Gardens and the old Crich Tramway are to hand for the historically-minded, alongside old Peak District villages and market towns for tearooms, restaurants, family pubs and lots of shopping: try Buxton, Ashbourne and Bakewell to start you off.

Back at Matlock Bath, let the kids go large at the rides and attractions of theme and play park Gullivers Kingdom for ages two to 13; the 600-acre Matlock Farm Park nearby should keep them busy for a bit too.
