Riddings Wood Holiday Park: Happy campers

General

  • Peaceful park near the Peak District
  • Easy access to Derby and Nottingham; two pubs five minutes' walk away
  • New toilet and shower block kept to immaculate standards

What a peaceful park this is for Peak District hols – on 11 acres of quiet woodland near the national park and set deep in the Derbyshire countryside with picnic areas peppered all around.

And what a pleasing park this is for those who insist on amenities being immaculate and up to date – the toilet and shower block comes with disabled access, baby changing, launderette and showers with hot and cold water, and is kept in tiptop condition at all times by the friendly site team.

Riddings Wood Holiday Park is a rural park but with easy access to urban centres like Derby and Nottingham as well as to the hikes, bike rides and canters of the Peak District. (If you're a bit bamboozled as to what to do first, have a look at the tourist info point in reception or ask the team for tips.) Campfires are allowed if you need a bit of warming upon return.

And finally, what a pint-friendly site Riddings Wood is too – the only thatched-roof pub in Derbyshire, Moulders Arms (aka The Thack), is a short stroll away; and the Seven Stars, a community pub, is just across the road. Cheers…

    Disliked:

The tent pitch was unlevel, faced downhill. It felt very disorientating when moving around the tent. Did not do my arthritis any good.
The showers although spotlessly clean were abysmal, freezing cold to boiling hot in seconds back to cold....was very hard to have a comfortable shower. Paying a £1 a shower was not a problem just the consistency of the temperature.

We were close to the park so the children could go off and play and we could see them all the time, they loved it

    Disliked:

Slopping ground pitch. Everything rolled. On arrival a guest was at the reception, it seemed that the manager was absolutely going above and beyond to help with her issues, even offering her the choice of 2 pitches to go look at and choose which ever she preferred, I thought this was fab, he was extremely patient. HOWEVER... we drove to what we thought was our pitch and began to set up, with 2 little boys restless and thirsty and it was very hot. We had put the tent up and I thought I would just let the manager know what pitch we were on, there were many more available. The manager informed that we could not stay on that pitch as someone was booked on it the next day, we asked could they not be allocated one of the other pitches or just swop them to the one we were to be on, but NO. he would not budge. It seemed the "bending over backwards" customer service that the previous person had received was not for everyone. He then said we had not booked electric hook up or our gazebo on booking!! Apparently I bad booked "electric optional" which ment I hadn't booked electric. How flipping confusing!! He made us drag our fully assembled tent and gazebo across the field. The pitch was on a slop and everything rolled. I think to be that awkward and make your guests move there tent when there were other pitches available and just a matter of changing the pitch for the other customer was awful. We had 2 little boys that were hot and thirsty we needed to get sorted as soon as possible, this just added frustration at the very beginning of our stay. Awful

Local attractions

To the Peak! The Peak District National Park is but a short drive from Riddings Wood Holiday Park, and has a bit of what you fancy for all ages and inclinations.

If you're in the area to hike, there are more Peak District trails than you can shake a (walking) stick at, from the shorter treks of seven or so miles around the upper Dove Valley and Pilsbury Castle, to long-distance paths like the Limestone Way (46 miles), the Derwent Valley Heritage Way (55 miles) or the Peak District parts of the Pennine Way, running for 268 miles from the northern Peak District to just inside the Scottish border.

Climbers and cavers also delve into all things Peak: thousands of routes for all abilities are all over the park for climbers, including Burcen Edge for beginners and more hair-raising ascents like Debauchery and Mad Dogs and Englishmen for the severely experienced.

If you're of a cavernous disposition, make your way to the village of Castleton and its four show caves, Blue John, the Peak, Treak Cliff and Speedwell Cavern with underground boat trip. Matlock Bath has a cable car to take adventurers to limestone caverns The Heights of Abraham, and Poole's Cavern near Buxton has vast caves to explore before an above-surface walk around Buxton Country Park.

Other attractions like Chatsworth House and Gardens and the old Crich Tramway are to hand for the historically-minded, alongside old Peak District villages and market towns for tearooms, restaurants, family pubs and lots of shopping: try Buxton, Ashbourne and Bakewell to start you off.

Back at Matlock Bath, let the kids go large at the rides and attractions of theme and play park Gullivers Kingdom for ages two to 13; the 600-acre Matlock Farm Park nearby should keep them busy for a bit too.
