General

  • Peaceful park near the Peak District
  • Easy access to Derby and N'ham; two pubs five minutes' walk away
  • New toilet and shower block kept to immaculate standards

What a peaceful park this is for Peak District hols – on 11 acres of quiet woodland near the national park and set deep in the Derbyshire countryside with picnic areas peppered all around.

And what a pleasing park this is for those who insist on amenities being immaculate and up to date – the toilet and shower block comes with disabled access, baby changing, launderette and showers with hot and cold water, and is kept in tiptop condition at all times by the friendly site team.

Riddings Wood Caravan and Camping Site is a rural park but with easy access to urban centres like Derby and Nottingham as well as to the hikes, bike rides and canters of the Peak District. (If you're a bit bamboozled as to what to do first, have a look at the tourist info point in reception or ask the team for tips.) Free wifi is available throughout the park and campfires are allowed.

And finally, what a pint-friendly site Riddings Wood is too – the only thatched-roof pub in Derbyshire, Moulders Arms (aka The Thack), is a short stroll away; and the Seven Stars, a community pub, is just across the road. Cheers…

Lovely site but wouldn’t stay again because it was too rowdy.08/09/2020

Facilities and spacing of electric pitches. Lovely toilets and showers. Well kept site.

    Disliked:

Disliked the fact that they did not make any effort to police their own COVID policies or site noise policies. Noise went on way after 11 with nobody checking, children couldn’t sleep because unsupervised kids were going nuts until 11 on a dark playground using phone torches and screaming- both nights. This was so loud that if anyone was actually supervising the site they would have seen it and intervened. Site was littered on arrival and throughout on bottom field. Advertised WiFi but it didn’t work at all. COVID policies were just posters- nobody checked anyone was following the guidance- often they weren’t in toilet block. People were in the office but didn’t answer phones on arrival. Really need to up the game with supervision of the site, especially in the current climate.

The lodges are really well appointed and clean. We were placed next to the in-laws as requested. This was a great way to see them while maintaining social distancing. They had the dog friendly lodge which was great with its gated veranda. We made use of the bbq area too.

    Disliked:

Matress was a bit soft for us.
It's great to have contactless check in at the moment but would be good to have a bit of extra information about the local area in the lodge e.g. recommendations for local food and (dog) walks; the kind of thing you might ask for when you check in usually.

Beautiful view. site is a good size, not to big. Younger kids loved the play area. Nice and quiet.

Site is kept clean and tidy.

    Disliked:

Pitch size where to small. Tents are to close together. And on slopes. Hard to keep our chairs stable.

Not all the people on the site stuck to social distancing rules.

Shower block could be cleaner. Generally it is clean but lots of dust and cobwebs on top of doors and in corners.

Never stayed at a campsite where you need to pay for showers.

Local attractions

To the Peak! The Peak District National Park is but a short drive from Riddings Wood Caravan and Camping Park, and has a bit of what you fancy for all ages and inclinations.

If you're in the area to hike, there are more Peak District trails than you can shake a (walking) stick at, from the shorter treks of seven or so miles around the upper Dove Valley and Pilsbury Castle, to long-distance paths like the Limestone Way (46 miles), the Derwent Valley Heritage Way (55 miles) or the Peak District parts of the Pennine Way, running for 268 miles from the northern Peak District to just inside the Scottish border.

Climbers and cavers also delve into all things Peak: thousands of routes for all abilities are all over the park for climbers, including Burcen Edge for beginners and more hair-raising ascents like Debauchery and Mad Dogs and Englishmen for the severely experienced.

If you're of a cavernous disposition, make your way to the village of Castleton and its four show caves, Blue John, the Peak, Treak Cliff and Speedwell Cavern with underground boat trip. Matlock Bath has a cable car to take adventurers to limestone caverns The Heights of Abraham, and Poole's Cavern near Buxton has vast caves to explore before an above-surface walk around Buxton Country Park.

Other attractions like Chatsworth House and Gardens and the old Crich Tramway are to hand for the historically-minded, alongside old Peak District villages and market towns for tearooms, restaurants, family pubs and lots of shopping: try Buxton, Ashbourne and Bakewell to start you off.

Back at Matlock Bath, let the kids go large at the rides and attractions of theme and play park Gullivers Kingdom for ages two to 13; the 600-acre Matlock Farm Park nearby should keep them busy for a bit too.
