  • Simple pitches on a peaceful 75-acre historic farm estate
  • Within the Snowdonia National Park, 10 minutes' drive from Dolgellau
  • Easy access to the Mawddach Trail and local walking/bike trails
Spacious pitches… seaside strolls… Snowdonia National Park… if such phrases fill your heart with glee, you should be pretty content at Cefn Coed. This spacious site is in a gorgeous Gwynedd location, within the national park and about 10 minutes’ drive from both the market town of Dolgellau and the coast at Fairbourne. If you’ve come to north Wales for the scenery, you should be pleased with your lot here: it’s in a sheltered valley of ancient oak woodlands, close to where the slopes of Cadair Idris roll down to the banks of the Mawddach Estuary. The site is part of a historic Welsh farm estate that now covers a splendid 75 acres of farmland and forest (if you want peace, this is the place – the nearest neighbours are almost a mile away). It’s also a fab spot to be in if you’re looking to get out and about: miles of walking, cycling and riding paths are easily accessible, including the famed Mawddach Trail (which you can follow all the way to Dolgellau, Fairbourne and Barmouth, or to a tiptop local pub/restaurant if you’re not feeling quite so energetic). Guests can also get out onto the circular route just above the property for some further viewpoints. Facilities on site include a facilities block with showers, toilets and a washing-up area. Water is available but must be boiled before consumption. The distance between the car parking and pitches is variable and parking by the pitch can't be guaranteed. Pitches are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis; if you have a particular request please let the site know and they'll do their best to accommodate you.

Oak Woodland non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: Okay well hands down best wild camping place I’ve ever stayed! My 18yr old daughter said she’d never want to go anywhere else, even though they didn’t really have much phone signal!! Perfect setting, owners and facilities! Definitely going back!

Oak Woodland non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: Me and my brother came to Cefn Coed this September 22nd-25th for a little biking break. I can honestly say it is the most beautiful campsite I’ve ever been to. The views and location were stunning. The owners Adrian and Natalie were so welcoming and they couldn’t have been more helpful. Adrian was just a book of knowledge of the surrounding areas and Natalie showed us some really nice walks. Their brilliant hospitality was effortless. We stayed in the estuary which was a stones throw from a beautiful crystal clear shallow river going into the estuary. There are so many good biking trails and all of the camping plots are very secluded from each other. The camp site has great shower and wash up facilities and the toilets are well looked after. There is also a shop onsite that sells a good amount of essentials. We even went to the shop one evening and it was closed so we just phoned the office and within a couple mins Adrian came over to open so we could get what we needed. There is fresh mountain water on tap to drink and it’s so refreshing. I can’t wait to come back next year for another long weekend here. I can honestly say that this is the place to go whether it’s an adventure fueled holiday you are after or just a relaxing one. They even have Wi-Fi at the reception area which was nice. There is also an option to have food cooked for you on site they do Thai food we didn’t have it this time round but we will definitely be eating there next time. We heard the pad Thai is amazing btw :) The town of Dolgellau is a 15 min bike ride away and is a really nice picturesque town. Thanks Cefn Coed. Till next time Matt and Harry

Wooded non-electric earth campervan pitch

Liked: Great campsite for being in the woods and surrounded by nature, similar to wild camping but with the luxury of toilets and showers. Facilities really nice.

Disliked: You don't get any phone signal but this is also quiet nice to have some quiet from technology.

Wooded non-electric earth campervan pitch

Liked: Lovely quiet site. Pitches in the woods are well spread out and reasonably private. Site owners are friendly and helpful. They also cook a Thai menu you can order from. Facilities were all clean. As a solo traveller this site was perfect.

Oak Woodland non-electric forest floor tent pitch

Liked: This site has some beautiful pitches in the oak woodland which open out onto the river estuary. As close as you can get to wild camping with the convenience of campsite amenities.

Disliked: Would be nice if fire pits were included in the price or dropped off at the pitch if they’re pre booked.

Local attractions

Ready to ramble? Take a wander around Abergwynant Woods, 20 minutes’ walk away, or get set to conquer Cadair Idris, the slopes of which you can reach on foot in a couple of hours. The New Precipice Walk (15 minutes’ drive) is a fab choice for spectacular views; if you’re more into moving at speed, make for the mountain bike trails at Coed-y-Brenin forest park (also 15 minutes). For less energetic days out, take fishing rods off to the banks of Cregennan Lakes (15 minutes) or Tal-y-llyn Lake (20 minutes) or make a break for the seaside at Fairbourne (10 minutes), where you can ride the heritage railway for a properly chilled-out time, or Barmouth (20 minutes). Keen to see what lies beneath? Take a boat ride into a world of subterranean dragons and the like at King Arthur’s Labyrinth (25 minutes). Back up in the daylight, ancient Cymer Abbey (10 minutes) and the fab Italianate village of Portmeirion (40 minutes) are top ports of call.
