Cefn Coed: Mountain sunrise from the comfort of your camper

General

  • Simple pitches on a peaceful 75-acre historic farm estate
  • Within the Snowdonia National Park, 10 minutes' drive from Dolgellau
  • Easy access to the Mawddach Trail and local walking/bike trails

Spacious pitches… seaside strolls… Snowdonia National Park… if such phrases fill your heart with glee, you should be pretty content at Cefn Coed. This spacious site is in a gorgeous Gwynedd location, within the national park and about 10 minutes’ drive from both the market town of Dolgellau and the coast at Fairbourne.

If you’ve come to north Wales for the scenery, you should be pleased with your lot here: it’s in a sheltered valley of ancient oak woodlands, close to where the slopes of Cadair Idris roll down to the banks of the Mawddach Estuary. The site is part of a historic Welsh farm estate that now covers a splendid 75 acres of farmland and forest (if you want peace, this is the place – the nearest neighbours are almost a mile away).

It’s also a fab spot to be in if you’re looking to get out and about: miles of walking, cycling and riding paths are easily accessible, including the famed Mawddach Trail (which you can follow all the way to Dolgellau, Fairbourne and Barmouth, or to a tiptop local pub/restaurant if you’re not feeling quite so energetic). Guests can also get out onto the circular route just above the property for some further viewpoints.

Facilities on site are pretty simple but guests can use the toilets at the farmhouse. Water is available but must be boiled before consumption. The distance between the car parking and pitches is variable and parking by the pitch can't be guaranteed. Pitches are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis; if you have a particular request please let the site know and they'll do their best to accommodate you.

Please note

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Units longer than 6m metres are not allowed.

This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.

There are no bins onsite: all rubbish will need to be taken home with you.

Water on-site is filtered but not chlorinated, boiling is therefore recommended.

This is a gem, the camper van pitches in the woods were brilliant - although we were only a few yards from the farmhouse it felt like we were in the middle of the forest. very few facilities, the toilets were clean, no showers yet as they were being built but this was not an issue.
Friendly owners..this is a great site. Loved the fact that it is wild camping with additions..
The added bonus of a delicious Thai meal delivered to your van and then a cooked breakfast and coffee next morning was brilliant.
This place is wonderful, the walk down to the river, passing all the hidden tent pitches, was lovely, even in the October rain.
I can only imagine how wonderful it would be on a summers night with a fire pit and wine..

Absolutely stunning campsite! Being surrounded by beautiful oak and birch woodland in secluded pitches, waking up to bird song, a short walk down to breathtaking mountain and estuary scenery, hanging out with the very free range chickens, making a camp-fire out of a rented firepit - absolute heaven.

Local attractions

Ready to ramble? Take a wander around Abergwynant Woods, 20 minutes’ walk away, or get set to conquer Cadair Idris, the slopes of which you can reach on foot in a couple of hours. The New Precipice Walk (15 minutes’ drive) is a fab choice for spectacular views; if you’re more into moving at speed, make for the mountain bike trails at Coed-y-Brenin forest park (also 15 minutes).

For less energetic days out, take fishing rods off to the banks of Cregennan Lakes (15 minutes) or Tal-y-llyn Lake (20 minutes) or make a break for the seaside at Fairbourne (10 minutes), where you can ride the heritage railway for a properly chilled-out time, or Barmouth (20 minutes).

Keen to see what lies beneath? Take a boat ride into a world of subterranean dragons and the like at King Arthur’s Labyrinth (25 minutes). Back up in the daylight, ancient Cymer Abbey (10 minutes) and the fab Italianate village of Portmeirion (40 minutes) are top ports of call.
