Our riverside pitch, under two great oaks, with ponies in the field on each side (added by manager 08 aug 2022)

  • Simple pitches on a peaceful 75-acre historic farm estate
  • Within the Snowdonia National Park, 10 minutes' drive from Dolgellau
  • Easy access to the Mawddach Trail and local walking/bike trails
Spacious pitches… seaside strolls… Snowdonia National Park… if such phrases fill your heart with glee, you should be pretty content at Cefn Coed. This spacious site is in a gorgeous Gwynedd location, within the national park and about 10 minutes’ drive from both the market town of Dolgellau and the coast at Fairbourne. If you’ve come to north Wales for the scenery, you should be pleased with your lot here: it’s in a sheltered valley of ancient oak woodlands, close to where the slopes of Cadair Idris roll down to the banks of the Mawddach Estuary. The site is part of a historic Welsh farm estate that now covers a splendid 75 acres of farmland and forest (if you want peace, this is the place – the nearest neighbours are almost a mile away). It’s also a fab spot to be in if you’re looking to get out and about: miles of walking, cycling and riding paths are easily accessible, including the famed Mawddach Trail (which you can follow all the way to Dolgellau, Fairbourne and Barmouth, or to a tiptop local pub/restaurant if you’re not feeling quite so energetic). Guests can also get out onto the circular route just above the property for some further viewpoints. Facilities on site include a facilities block with showers, toilets and a washing-up area. Water is available but must be boiled before consumption. The distance between the car parking and pitches is variable and parking by the pitch can't be guaranteed. Pitches are allocated on a first-come-first-served basis; if you have a particular request please let the site know and they'll do their best to accommodate you.

  • If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.
  • There are no garbage cans onsite: all garbage will need to be taken home with you.
  • Water on-site is filtered but not chlorinated, boiling is therefore recommended.

Oak Woodland primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked: A perfect location equipped with great facilities, including a convenient small shop, clean toilets and showers with hot water, a bar, freshly brewed coffee and an authentic Thai food caravan. The pitches are well distributed to maximise privacy, with plenty of choices. The campsite is very close to a relaxing stream, iconic trails and amazing walks. The management staff are super friendly, relaxed and helpful. It has become our go-to campsite in Wales.

Oak Woodland primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked: The campsites The people The walking track to the estuary The kitchen The names of each campsite written on slate & translated to English

Disliked: A lot of rubbish and debris piled up behind the shop and around the stables. The rubbish is not in the way but it clashes to me with the beauty of the landscape.

Liked: What an incredible campsite that has quickly become a firm favourite of mine. Immaculate pitches that really give you that wild camping feel but with all the amenities you could want. Certain pitches can accommodate hammocks which is a big bonus. Lovely helpful staff.

Oak Woodland primitive forest floor tent campsite

Liked: Really friendly staff and great pitches! Really dog friendly. Good fire provisions (fire pit & wood for sale on site) Clean and tidy, good showering/washing facilities on site. The showers were warm and consistent. Great little shop for bits I forgot, coffee in the morning and some delicious Thai takeaway for when I didn't want to cook. There was also a bar but I didn't use that.

Disliked: Toilets were a bit cramped but hey if you're going for this sort of wild camping experience you know what you're looking at. Maybe give the wheelbarrows a little bit of maintenance.

Local attractions

Ready to ramble? Take a wander around Abergwynant Woods, 20 minutes’ walk away, or get set to conquer Cadair Idris, the slopes of which you can reach on foot in a couple of hours. The New Precipice Walk (15 minutes’ drive) is a fab choice for spectacular views; if you’re more into moving at speed, make for the mountain bike trails at Coed-y-Brenin forest park (also 15 minutes). For less energetic days out, take fishing rods off to the banks of Cregennan Lakes (15 minutes) or Tal-y-llyn Lake (20 minutes) or make a break for the seaside at Fairbourne (10 minutes), where you can ride the heritage railway for a properly chilled-out time, or Barmouth (20 minutes). Keen to see what lies beneath? Take a boat ride into a world of subterranean dragons and the like at King Arthur’s Labyrinth (25 minutes). Back up in the daylight, ancient Cymer Abbey (10 minutes) and the fab Italianate village of Portmeirion (40 minutes) are top ports of call.
