  • Peaceful, fully serviced North Wales site on the edge of Snowdonia
  • A 10-minute drive to Caernarfon Castle; 20 to Zip World Penrhyn Quarry
  • Table tennis, skittles and pool on site, plus 20 acres to explore
With a magical setting overlooking Eryri (Snowdonia) hills, Rhyd y Galen is a peaceful caravan and camping park in rural North Wales. Fancy exploring the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia), the beautiful North Wales coastline and the Isle of Anglesey? Then this is your place. For your ease, access to the grass camping pitches is via tarmac roads. Generous in size and fully serviced, they come with a whole host of facilities, from a spotless shower block, well lit at night for your convenience and complete with hair dryers to keep you looking your best, to a family-friendly baby-changing unit and a laundry. On hand are 20 acres of land for families (and any canine pals) wanting to be out walking, playing and exploring, and if the kids should get restless, keep them entertained with games of table tennis, table football, skittles or pool. If you need to stock up on groceries, there are several supermarkets in Caernarfon (10 minutes’ drive), and if you fancy making a night of it in the town’s pubs and restaurants, ditch the car and jump in a local taxi.

Electric grass pitch

Liked: Lots of room to play on the field, modern and clean toilet blocks, fun games room, close to Caernarfon and Sherpa bus services to Yr Wyddfa, though this convenience comes with road noise.

Disliked: Dislike is a strong word, these are more observations: The pot wash facility is a bit small and awkwardly placed. Would benefit from more bins on site, particularly to encourage recycling.

Liked: A really well kept campsite very clean facilities. Very picturesque and quiet

Disliked: If you have a dog not many places to walk nearby

From the manager: Thank you for your feedback! We're glad you enjoyed the cleanliness and tranquility of our campsite. We do have a dedicated dog exercise field and 20 acres of land to walk your dog also there is a path/ cycle route opposite our entrance that leads (pardon the pun) to the village. We hope to see you and your furry friend again soon!

Unbelievably well kept, but noisy and it has the Big Brother factor.

Fully-serviced grass tent pitch

Liked: The campsite is extremely well maintained, including the toilet and shower blocks which are always immaculate. The staff are helpful and friendly. The option of WiFi is nice, and the location is great for National Trust visits.

Disliked: Although this campsite is beautifully kept, that comes at a cost, which is one of almost constant noise due to the grass cutters and strimmers. On top of that is the nearby road noise which is tolerable during the day, less so at night, as well as the small aircraft which fly most of the time directly overhead. Something which others might find a positive we did not, which is the CCTV camera pointed directly at our tent. Good for security, but bad for being able to just relax without feeling watched.

From the manager: Thank you for your detailed review! We're pleased to hear you appreciated the cleanliness of our facilities, the helpfulness of our staff, and our convenient location. We apologise for the noise disturbances. We do use battery powered strimmers to reduce the noise. We have installed CCTV throughout the park for the security of our guests and as a deterrent. We do not sit and watch it. Your feedback is invaluable as we strive to improve our guests' experience. We look forward to welcoming you back in September, as you mentioned to the wardens.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked: The campsite was beautifully maintained, facilities immaculate and the staff were friendly and helpful. It was quiet and peaceful with beautiful views. plenty of space around the pitches for kids to run around and play. Myself and my son both really liked it. It was also a good base to explore from, and lots to do. We visited Anglesey, Snowdon, castles, a zoo and loads more. All within a 20-40 min drive from the site. We had a fantastic few days and would definitely come back.

Local attractions

Standing where the Afont Seiont river meets the Menai Strait, Caernarfon Castle (10 minutes’ drive) is a forbidding medieval fortress and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Perhaps best known as the place where Prince Charles was invested in 1969, it also houses the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum, which explores the history of this infantry regiment. If you’re in a ‘feel the fear, but do it anyway’ mood, you can head to Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (20 minutes), where the Velocity 2 zipline stretches across a lake, allowing you to travel at speeds of up to 100mph. If you are brave enough to keep your eyes open during your flight, you can also take in splendid views of Eryri (Snowdonia). For something less hair-raising, Portmeirion (40 minutes) is a village featuring Italian-inspired pastel-coloured buildings and lush sub-tropical vegetation. Grab an ice cream from Italian gelateria Caffi’r Angel, and take a leisurely stroll through the quaint streets or along the sandy beach on the Afon Dwyryd estuary.
