General

  • Peaceful, fully serviced North Wales site on the edge of Snowdonia
  • A 10-minute drive to Caernarfon Castle; 20 to Zip World Penrhyn Quarry
  • Table tennis, skittles and pool on site, plus 20 acres to explore

With a magical setting overlooking Snowdonia hills, Rhyd y Galen is a peaceful caravan and camping park in rural North Wales. Fancy exploring the mountains of Eryri (Snowdonia), the beautiful North Wales coastline and the Isle of Anglesey? Then this is your place.

For your ease, access to the grass camping pitches is via tarmac roads. Generous in size and fully serviced, they come with a whole host of facilities, from a spotless shower block, well lit at night for your convenience and complete with hair dryers to keep you looking your best, to a family-friendly baby-changing unit and a laundry.

On hand are 20 acres of land for families (and any canine pals) wanting to be out walking, playing and exploring, and if the kids should get restless, keep them entertained with games of table tennis, table football, skittles or pool.

If you need to stock up on groceries, there are several supermarkets in Caernarfon (10 minutes’ drive), and if you fancy making a night of it in the town’s pubs and restaurants, ditch the car and jump in a local taxi.

Please note

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

The campground/park does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dog Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the campground/park are unlit.

The whole site was in excellent condition and was managed by a great team of dedicated people.
The pitches were a fantastic size and very private.
The site was clean, very well maintained and modern with everything we needed. Bathrooms, showers, washing facilities, everything was in great condition and clearly looked after.
It was very quiet, which is exactly what we wanted, but also very close to amenities, supermarkets and lots of local attractions and beauty spots
The whole site felt very secure too, which is always a bonus.
I also liked that we didn't have to leave site until 12:00 pm, which is an great idea. We were able to have breakfast and get packed away in good time without any pressure.
Well done to the team there, and thanks for making our stay that much better

    Disliked:

Perhaps an additional dog waste bin would be an advantage as some selfish guests tend to leave the odd present for others to move (Which I cant blame the venue for)

I also thought the charges to add my son and his partner, along with additional costs for their puppy and their car were excessive, compared to many other venues we have stayed at... This didn't spoil our visit but thought this would be useful feedback to offer

A lovely well kept site. It was our first camping trip. Staff were pleasant at all times. It was peaceful with just the sounds of the wildlife and the occasional friendly dog staying on site. The shower blocks were clean and tidy and not too far away. If you stay in a caravan you might have views of the mountains but in a tent you are more secluded. The pitches are of reasonable size for the larger modern tents. They were also fully serviced with a water tap and electric.

Only issued we had was the bed mattress was a little thin and we could feel the slat’s underneath, could go with a topper maybe. And the logs provided didn’t burn so brought more. But only minor issues and didn’t change our experience.

Directions

Rhyd y Galen is located on the B4366 on the right-hand side two miles after Caernarfon. If you are travelling along the B4366 from the east, do not turn right down a farm track to the postcode LL55 1UL. Instead, proceed for 400 metres and look out for the Welsh flag on your left.

Local attractions

Standing where the Afont Seiont river meets the Menai Strait, Caernarfon Castle (10 minutes’ drive) is a forbidding medieval fortress and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Perhaps best known as the place where Prince Charles was invested in 1969, it also houses the Royal Welch Fusiliers Museum, which explores the history of this infantry regiment.

If you’re in a ‘feel the fear, but do it anyway’ mood, you can head to Zip World Penrhyn Quarry (20 minutes), where the Velocity 2 zipline stretches across a lake, allowing you to travel at speeds of up to 100mph. If you are brave enough to keep your eyes open during your flight, you can also take in splendid views of Snowdonia.

For something less hair-raising, Portmeirion (40 minutes) is a village featuring Italian-inspired pastel-coloured buildings and lush sub-tropical vegetation. Grab an ice cream from Italian gelateria Caffi’r Angel, and take a leisurely stroll through the quaint streets or along the sandy beach on the Afon Dwyryd estuary.

Must see

  • Caernarfon Castle (4.2 kilometres)
  • Snowdon Mountain Railway (8.4 kilometres)
  • National Slate Museum (8.4 kilometres)

National Trust

  • Plas Newydd Country House and Gardens (4.9 kilometres)
  • Ty^ Mawr Wybrnant (28.1 kilometres)
