  • Family park with beach access and a private cove
  • Heated indoor pool, kids' club, leisure centre and solarium
  • Bistro restaurant, takeaway and two shops on site
First-class facilities, access to a beach with private cove, and with views over Wigtown Bay and miles of scenic Scottish countryside: there’s a lot to pick from at this gorgeous and hilly Galloway park, in an area where generations of holidaymakers have escaped to relax and unwind. Guests of all ages will be sorted at family-friendly Auchenlarie Holiday Park: kids’ clubs and family entertainment are on hand for small fry; older kids and teenagers can get competitive at fun-filed The Zone amusement arcade and games room, and all ages can splash safely about in the heated indoor pool, which has a separate area for smaller swimmers. The park’s craft activities will keep mini guests busy as the kids' club organises lots of options from face painting to making their own jewellery. These run in high season, and please note that there may be a small charge for some activities. The Auchenlarie team is also rightly proud of its smart leisure centre, which, as well as the pool, has a solarium for topping up tans, a sauna to relax in, and a fully-equipped gym. Guests can pay as they go for the use of these leisure facilities, or buy a daily or weekly pass on arrival for the park leisure and entertainment. The Surfside bistro has both smashing sea views and a menu of drinks, snacks and meals for alfresco dining on the large terrace overlooking the bay, and the park also has a takeaway dishing up tasty fresh pizzas. A large, well-stocked convenience store has all the bits you need for self-catering, and there's also a smaller shop in the main complex area. Elsewhere, have a spot of free sea fishing (bring your own equipment) down at the private cove during the day, head out to explore the area's fine walking and biking options, or sashay along to the Starlight Suite in the evenings for grownup merriment including live music nights.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Great location right by the sea, which made it easy to get out for walks. The site has good facilities – the pool, restaurant and playground were all solid.

The grass was well kept and the main toilet/shower blocks were close by, modern and clean. Showers had warm water, which is always a plus.

The pitch sizes were good and each had own electricity and water supply.

Communication from the site was clear and helpful by email and accommodated additional requests. Overall, ok place to stay.

Disliked The pitch wasn’t as clean as it could have been when we arrived, with some litter left behind from previous campers, which was a bit disappointing—especially as the communal grass areas were much better maintained.

The site is near a small wooded area with a lot of crows, so there was quite a bit of noise at times (though that’s obviously not something the site can control). The tent pitches are also fairly close to a main road, so you do hear traffic.

It’s a very busy site, which might suit some people, but it wasn’t really what we were looking for. The smaller toilet block also felt more dated and had a few issues with the floor and toilet seats.

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed review. We're really pleased to hear you enjoyed our seafront location, facilities, and found our team’s communication helpful. It’s great to know the pitches, amenities, and cleanliness of the main facilities met your expectations.

We’re sorry to hear that your pitch wasn’t as clean as it should have been on arrival. That’s certainly not the standard we aim for, and we’ll be addressing this with our team to ensure improvements are made. We also appreciate your comments regarding the smaller toilet block and will take these on board as part of our ongoing maintenance plans.

Thank you as well for your understanding regarding the natural surroundings and nearby road. As a busy, family-friendly site, we appreciate it may not suit everyone, but your feedback is really valuable in helping future guests make informed choices.

We do hope to welcome you back in the future and provide an even better experience.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Site was clean and tidy, toilets regularly maintained to a good standard, lots of parks and grassy areas for kids to play on. Polite and approachable staff across the board. We loved the stream running behind our camping spot, the beach was beautiful and the hill down from the onsite shop to the campsite gave beautiful views. Palm trees and the vast panoramic view of the sea made me question whether I was in Scotland or Spain! Swimming pool changing rooms and toilets were nipping clean. Shop well stocked, Costa machine is a lovely touch and if you have a sweet tooth, get your hands on a Toffee Flake slice by Sharon’s Bakes, you won’t be disappointed.

Disliked Food at Tide and Table restaurant majorly overpriced for the quality, 2 adults and 1 kids fish and chips cost nearly £60. Turned up at 5pm without booking since we were unaware this was the process, plenty empty tables but told to book online. Earliest booking was 6pm. Our son ended up vomiting during the night and the very expensive fish covered both our sleeping bags and the airbed! A trip to the laundrette (a very welcomed onsite facility at this point) was needed the next day. Almost £5 for some washing pods, £11 in total for the washing machine and £6 in total for the dryer left us over £20 and half a day down. A very expensive meal and aftermath. The heated pool was freezing cold with no lifeguard, and the rowdy teenagers throwing each other around made it difficult to enjoy with our 5 year old. Softplay wasn’t up to much and again, older kids blocking the way for the younger ones. Overall a decent, clean site with a variety of things to do, as long as you have plenty of money to spend and don’t mind the typical caravan kid cliques, and are quick to jump out of the way of electric scooters!

From the manager: Thank you for taking the time to share such a detailed review of your stay with us.

We’re really pleased to hear how much you enjoyed the cleanliness of the site, the facilities, and the natural surroundings. It’s lovely to know that the views, beach, and little touches like the shop and local bakes made your stay feel special. Your kind comments about our team are especially appreciated we’ll be sure to pass those on.

We’re very sorry to hear about the issues you experienced during your stay. Your feedback regarding the restaurant pricing and booking process has been noted, and we understand how frustrating that situation must have been, particularly with a young child. We’re also sorry to hear about your son being unwell and we hope he is feeling much better now.

We appreciate your comments on the laundrette costs, pool temperature, and supervision, as well as the challenges with older children in shared spaces. These are all areas we continually review, and your feedback helps us identify where improvements can be made to ensure a more comfortable experience for families.

Thank you again for your honest feedback. We’re glad you found many aspects of the park enjoyable, and we do hope to welcome you back in the future for an even better stay.

Electric grass tent pitch

Liked Lovely location, beautiful view out to sea, the entertainment for kids was fab, swimming facilities were clean, the soft play and outdoor play area good for young kids. All the staff were friendly.

Disliked A very minor point and nothing that can be done, but there is hundreds of crows in the trees next to the camping section and are very loud from 4am, its nature at the end of the day, and really didn't bother us too much but it was loud enough to wake us.

Recommend to friends Visit again

From the manager: Thank you so much for your lovely review. We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed the location, sea views, and that the children had such a great time with the entertainment and play areas. It’s also great to know our team made a positive impression we’ll be sure to pass on your kind words to them.

We appreciate you mentioning the early morning chorus from the local wildlife too. As you said, it’s part of the natural surroundings, but we understand it can be a little early when on holiday.

We hope to welcome you and your family back again soon for another enjoyable stay.

We’re sorry to hear you had trouble getting TV reception during your visit. For future stays, we do provide cables that allow guests to connect to our Freesat system, which usually gives a much more reliable signal. If you ever need one, just call into reception and we’ll be happy to help.

Local attractions

Trad fans, pop fans, bibliophiles and foodies can indulge their passions easily in the area: many local pubs have regular traditional music sessions and the region has a good handful of festivals of all flavours including the Wigtown Book Festival and Stranraer Oyster Festival. On the music front, tap your foot at the Galloway and Portpatrick folk festivals, both easy to get to from Auchenlarie, or go along to one of the folk clubs which meet regularly in Dalbeattie and Stranraer. By day, dander around the rest of Dumfries and Galloway for a range of things to do like coastal strolling around Wigtown and Luce Bay, fishing, championship golf courses and blossoming at the county’s public gardens and their exotic specimens flourishing in Galloway’s mild climate. Logan Botanic Garden on the Rhins of Galloway is filled with southern hemisphere plants and palm trees; take a hike up the park’s hill afterwards for views to take your breath away over the Rhins to the Galloway Hills. Red deer, wild goats and red kites are a few sights to see in nearby Galloway Forest Park to the north of Auchenlarie, Britain’s biggest forest park at 300 square miles, and with forest trails, lochside cycle paths, wildlife centres, horse-riding and mountain biking all to hand/hoof. The 24-mile Red Kite Trail around Loch Ken is level enough for cycling and has six outdoor viewing points, four hides and a visitor centre with CCTV open in summer; if you’d like to look skywards by night, Galloway Forest Park is the only Dark Sky Park in the UK and one of only four in the world. Dazzle your little darlings at the award-winning Creetown Gem Rock Museum, a jewel of an attraction near Newton Stuart with gemstones, crystals, rocks and fossils on display, interactive exhibits and the glow of the Crystal Cave. It’s one of several museums in Dumfries and Galloway including the Museum Newton Stewart, telling the history of the county, and the Robert Burns Centre in Dumfries, telling the story of the bard. To see historical sights on site, there are castles, abbeys and vintage buildings all around, such as Cardoness, Carsluith and Threave castles, Dundrennan Abbey, the motes of Mark and Urr, and towers at Drumcoltran and Orchardton.
