General

  • Family park a mile from the beach
  • Heated indoor pool, kids' clubs, leisure centre and solarium
  • Bistro restaurant, takeaway and two shops on site

First class facilities, soaringly high standards, a mile from the beach and with views over Wigtown Bay and miles of scenic Scottish countryside: there’s a lot to pick from at this gorgeous Galloway park, in an area where holidaymakers have flocked forth for generations.

Guests of all sizes will be sorted at five-star Auchenlarie Holiday Park: kids’ clubs and family entertainment are on hand for small fry; older kids and teenagers can get competitive in The Zone amusement arcade and games room, and all ages can splash safely about in the heated indoor pool, which has a separate area for smaller swimmers.

The park’s craft activities will keep mini guests busy from T-shirt printing and building their own bears to making jewellery; the kids’ club runs in high season and is mainly free, with a small charge occasionally made for some of the daily activities.

The Auchenlarie team is also rightly proud of its bang up to date leisure centre, which as well as the pool has a solarium for topping up tans and a fully-equipped gym. Guests can pay as they go for whatever activity they want to try, or buy a daily or weekly pass on arrival for the park leisure and entertainment.

A bistro restaurant with smashing sea views is handily on site for drinks, snacks and meals, and the park also has a Surfside takeaway, a large, well-stocked convenience store and a smaller shop in the main complex area.

Elsewhere, have a spot of free sea fishing (bring your own equipment) during the day, or sashay along to the Starlight Suite later for regular merriment including cabaret and kids' entertainers.

Please note

Single-sex bookings of 4 or more people (couples and immediate family members excepted) are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Leisure and entertainment facilities are subject to extra charges. For full information please read the terms and conditions under the 'Policies' tab.

    Parks clean and tidy
    Friendly staff
Swimming pool was out of action but staff kindly informed by email of this problem..pool was up and running again 5 days later.

    Disliked:

Caravan hadnt been cleaned very well. Crumbs under coffee table and rubbish under beds.
Disappointed with the superhero party...very little effort put in and one disappointed 4 year old expecting to see at least 1 superhero. 5* for girls performance though. But expensive for 45 minutes entertainment which wasnt explained very well on flyer.
Machines in the zone either off or not working. Nothing in vending machines.
Shop wasnt very well stocked at the zone...paid £2 for soft play and little one couldnt even get juice so wanted to leave as he was thirsty.
Unfortunately there had also been slugs overnight practically every night. Should of said to the reception but by time we were halfway through holiday it dawned on me.
Wifi was great for first 3 days then terrible after that.

From the manager...

I'm sorry you had a disappointing stay with us. I do hope you reported the problems to our Reception Team. We deal with any problems immediately, so, regarding the cleanliness of your caravan, a member of Housekeeping would have been despatched to deal with it.

Your other comments have been passed to Senior Management for consideration.

Thank you for taking the time to point out these problems.

Food at the restaurant seemed precooked meals..we expected freshly made food for the price.

From the manager...

Hi, thanks for your comments. Not all the food is pre-cooked. Of course, pies will be - at this time of year we do operate a reasonably restricted menu - but all is prepared fresh and we think tasty and well-worth the money.

The peace and quiet, the lack of mobile phone signal. The cheery staff and the reasonably priced shop.

    Disliked:

The pool was unavailable 4 out of the 6 days - but I understand that some events are outside the park's control.
The site could do with some more lighting in the RED section as it was very dark when we came back from the entertainment complex.

From the manager...

Thanks for your comments - regarding the lighting - senior management have been advised for future planning purposes.

    center in a beautiful place

    Disliked:

We got a damp and smelly caravan.
It is unacceptable that you can not eat a meal from 1-5pm. In such a center it should be served full time

From the manager...

Food is served until 2pm (last orders at 1.45pm) and has been for several years, and of course when we are in low season we have to operate in relation to the number of guests we have on Park. The bistro is open 11am – 2pm however.

Caravan was worth the money, everything you needed. Nice site with lots to do round about. Pity about the weather

    Disliked:

We were in red area, it was very dark walking back at night. Amusements can do with being upgraded, many machines not working. Soft play area closed too early, kids nothing to do when bingo is on. There was problems with tv channels not working, then water going off when we were there, and swimming pool shut. It wouldn't put us off coming back

From the manager...

Thank you for your comments - particularly regarding the lighting in the Red Zone - they have been passed to senior management for attention.

    The shop was reasonable

    Disliked:

Arrived for 3 day on Friday 13th Oct pool was closed until Sunday, no communication to tell us before hand no linen in the caravan which I paid for, no entertainment due to the burst leak no amusements all was closed. Over all poor service.

From the manager...

Unfortunately, we didn’t have prior knowledge of a major issue with the water supply. It would have been an enormous task to contact everyone when we were too busy trying to rectify the fault which had resulted in no water, washing or restaurant facilities. Most people were very understanding of our predicament.

I do apologise that the linen was missing but I am sure you didn’t have long to wait before some was delivered.

Local attractions

Trad fans, pop fans, bibliophiles and foodies can indulge their passions easily in the area: many local pubs have regular traditional music sessions and the region has a good handful of festivals of all flavours including the Wigtown Book Festival, Flavour Fortnight and the Wickerman Festival at Dundrennan every July.

More folksily, tap your foot at the Galloway and Portpatrick folk festivals, both easy to get to from Auchenlarie, or go along to one of the folk clubs which meet regularly in Dalbeattie and Stranraer.

By day, dander around the rest of Dumfries and Galloway for a range of things to do like coastal strolling around Wigtown and Luce Bay, fishing, championship golf courses and blossoming at the county’s public gardens and their exotic specimens flourishing in Galloway’s mild climate.

Logan Botanic Garden on the Rhins of Galloway is filled with southern hemisphere plants and palm trees; take a hike up the park’s hill afterwards for views to take your breath away over the Rhins to the Galloway Hills.

Red deer, wild goats and red kites are a few sights to see in nearby Galloway Forest Park to the north of Auchenlarie, Britain’s biggest forest park at 300 square miles, and with forest trails, lochside cycle paths, wildlife centres, horse-riding and mountain biking all to hand/hoof.

The 24-mile Red Kite Trail around Loch Ken is level enough for cycling and has six outdoor viewing points, four hides and a visitor centre with CCTV open in summer; if you’d like to look skywards by night, Galloway Forest Park is the only Dark Sky Park in the UK and one of only four in the world.

Dazzle your little darlings at the award-winning Creetown Gem Rock Museum, a jewel of an attraction near Newton Stuart with gemstones, crystals, rocks and fossils on display, interactive exhibits and the glow of the Crystal Cave. It’s one of several museums in Dumfries and Galloway including the Museum Newton Stewart, telling the history of the county, and the Robert Burns Centre in Dumfries, telling the story of the bard.

To see historical sights on site, there are castles, abbeys and vintage buildings all around, such as Cardoness, Carsluith and Threave castles, Dundrennan Abbey, the motes of Mark and Urr, and towers at Drumcoltran and Orchardton.
