General

  • Family park with beach access and a private cove
  • Heated indoor pool, kids' club, leisure centre and solarium
  • Bistro restaurant, takeaway and two shops on site

First-class facilities, access to a beach with private cove, and with views over Wigtown Bay and miles of scenic Scottish countryside: there’s a lot to pick from at this gorgeous Galloway park, in an area where generations of holidaymakers have escaped to relax and unwind.

Guests of all ages will be sorted at family-friendly Auchenlarie Holiday Park: kids’ clubs and family entertainment are on hand for small fry; older kids and teenagers can get competitive at fun-filed The Zone amusement arcade and games room, and all ages can splash safely about in the heated indoor pool, which has a separate area for smaller swimmers.

The park’s craft activities will keep mini guests busy as the kids' club organises lots of options from face painting to making their own jewellery. These run in high season and please note that there may be a small charge for some activities.

The Auchenlarie team is also rightly proud of its smart leisure centre, which as well as the pool has a solarium for topping up tans, a sauna to relax in, and a fully-equipped gym. Guests can pay as they go for the use of these leisure facilities, or buy a daily or weekly pass on arrival for the park leisure and entertainment.

The Surfside bistro has both smashing sea views and a menu of drinks, snacks and meals for alfresco dining on the large terrace overlooking the bay, and the park also has a takeaway dishing up tasty fresh pizzas. A large, well-stocked convenience store has all the bits you need for self-catering, and there's also a smaller shop in the main complex area.

Elsewhere, have a spot of free sea fishing (bring your own equipment) down at the private cove during the day, head out to explore the area's fine walking and biking options, or sashay along to the Starlight Suite in the evenings for grownup merriment including live music nights.

We have had a fantastic break at this park. The weather being great was a bonus but the park itself was clean, easy to find everything and all the staff were so friendly and helpful, nothing was too much trouble.
Each time we needed the toilet/shower block there was always toilet/shower available.
Some might find the steeper roads a bit much but thats the layout so as long as you are aware before you go but we absolutely loved our stay and the beach is fabulous.
We will definately be booking again for next year.

Very Noisy traffic in the pink zone, didn’t sleep very well because of a lot of wagons going past. Would be good idea to leave a mop & bucket so you can clean the shower floor, they got a bit grubby.

The whole site was really well maintained and clean. The tent pitches were a great size for a large tent, and it was good having a water tap at each tent.
The toilet and dish washing facilities were very clean and there was a lovely friendly cleaner there to clean after every person showered in the mornings.
The staff were all very friendly - from the cleaner to the donut stand to the barstaff, everyone was friendly, approachable and helpful. The kids workers were brilliant with the children and our boys loved the activities on offer like a water fight, arts and crafts and the evening parties.
The site is big enough not to feel busy even although it was! The playpark, beach etc never got overly busy at any time. There was so much to do on site that we didn't venture far but the local area seems very nice too. The on site beach is qutie rocky and stoney, but there is a lovely sandy one only a few minutes drive away.
There was a booking system in place for COVID reasons for use of the swimming pool, gym, evening entertainment etc. This meant you couldn't just go to the pool whenever you wanted to, but had to book in advance. This system worked well though, so long as you book well in advance for the swimming as places sell out quickly. We booked before we arrived for a few swimming slots, and this worked very well. My husband was able to book the gym no problem even on the day as this was less popular!
The take away food was really excellent quality. Tasty pizza and fish and chips! The dessert stall also had amazing desserts at reasonable prices.

    Disliked:

Just a few wee niggles - such as the kids activies being cancelled due to the weather (which was only a light drizzle) but this not being communicated other than on Facebook (even although we booked by email). The kids workers were left to field disgruntled parents and upset children and management who had made the decision were nowhere to be seen!
And watching the Euro final in the Starlight Suite - the big screen was at least 20 seconds ahead of the smaller screens and the audio, making it unwatchable! When we asked if this could be fixed we were told there was nothing they could do, which felt a bit unhelpful. Ended up back at the tent watching the footie on the laptop instead!
The waiting time for food was lengthy - sometimes 2 hours after ordering. But this was because of staff shortages and the staff who were there were working flat out and running about to try to keep things moving as quickly as possible. And they were very friendly so no complaints there. So long as we knew to order a few hours before we wanted to eat then it was all good. They called us on our mobile to let us know when our food was ready. Food was excellent quality so worth waiting on.

Park was very clean and perfect for families, the views are really nice and the beach is nice you can walk out a good distance when the tide is out and although the beach is ground shells the water is sand under foot, good variety of food and drinks, plenty of play parks for
the kids, toilets were cleaned regularly daily and the shop is very well stocked for those essentials missed when packing

    Disliked:

You are next to the A75 main trunk road from Stranraer to dumfries so you really need ear plugs for a good sleep as the lorries trundle past at 60 mph at 3.00 a.m

Local attractions

Trad fans, pop fans, bibliophiles and foodies can indulge their passions easily in the area: many local pubs have regular traditional music sessions and the region has a good handful of festivals of all flavours including the Wigtown Book Festival and Stranraer Oyster Festival.

On the music front, tap your foot at the Galloway and Portpatrick folk festivals, both easy to get to from Auchenlarie, or go along to one of the folk clubs which meet regularly in Dalbeattie and Stranraer.

By day, dander around the rest of Dumfries and Galloway for a range of things to do like coastal strolling around Wigtown and Luce Bay, fishing, championship golf courses and blossoming at the county’s public gardens and their exotic specimens flourishing in Galloway’s mild climate.

Logan Botanic Garden on the Rhins of Galloway is filled with southern hemisphere plants and palm trees; take a hike up the park’s hill afterwards for views to take your breath away over the Rhins to the Galloway Hills.

Red deer, wild goats and red kites are a few sights to see in nearby Galloway Forest Park to the north of Auchenlarie, Britain’s biggest forest park at 300 square miles, and with forest trails, lochside cycle paths, wildlife centres, horse-riding and mountain biking all to hand/hoof.

The 24-mile Red Kite Trail around Loch Ken is level enough for cycling and has six outdoor viewing points, four hides and a visitor centre with CCTV open in summer; if you’d like to look skywards by night, Galloway Forest Park is the only Dark Sky Park in the UK and one of only four in the world.

Dazzle your little darlings at the award-winning Creetown Gem Rock Museum, a jewel of an attraction near Newton Stuart with gemstones, crystals, rocks and fossils on display, interactive exhibits and the glow of the Crystal Cave. It’s one of several museums in Dumfries and Galloway including the Museum Newton Stewart, telling the history of the county, and the Robert Burns Centre in Dumfries, telling the story of the bard.

To see historical sights on site, there are castles, abbeys and vintage buildings all around, such as Cardoness, Carsluith and Threave castles, Dundrennan Abbey, the motes of Mark and Urr, and towers at Drumcoltran and Orchardton.
