General

  • Small and peaceful park a few steps from the beach
  • Spectacular sea views over to Jura and Islay
  • Wildlife and birdwatching haven

It's only a few steps from your accommodation to the beaut beach of Muasdale Holiday Park on the west coast of Kintyre: your dog will surely be delighted.

As will scenery seekers: 'perfect', 'stunning' and 'beautiful' are just a few of the plaudits piled on the spectacular sea scenery from this park – now under new ownership – along with an observation from one chuffed former guest wondering who would need a telly when pitching up here…?

Muasdale is a small, peaceful and family-run park midway between Tarbert and Campbeltown, and in a coastal locale of splendid scenery, right on the beach with striking vistas over to the islands of Islay, Jura and Gigha. The ferries are a short drive from the site for days of island-hopping; you can even get over to Ballycastle and Northern Ireland for the day via the Isle of Islay.

As you might reckon, this is wildlife and birdwatching heaven, with seals, otters and springtime nesting birds on the beach, more seals in the surrounding waters, and many a seabird overhead. It's fishing land too, so bring your kit with you.

Supplies can be picked up at two large supermarkets in Campbeltown or at the village shop in Muasdale, which is well stocked with essentials. The local bus stop 100 yards from the site runs to Campbeltown and Tarbert Taynloan to meet up with the Gigha ferry, or Kennacraig to meet up with the Islay ferry; this is also the main bus to Glasgow.

And then there are the sunsets around here: take a minute now and sigh happily over those site pics...

Very expensive considering there were no facilities open (Covid)
No sign of owner - we just pitched up and left. We didn't know where we supposed to go - so could conceivably have annoyed another user.

This is a nice site with a great location but lack of contact an issue15/09/2020

Great view and location right on the beach. It is just a field next to the beach and I understand Covid is having an impact so no toilets or showers.

    Disliked:

Lack of communication from owners and pitch allocation issues. We emailed them a few weeks before our stay to ask if we could add a third night on but got no reply. The only communication from the owners was to say they had allocated us pitch 7. I'd read other reviews about allocation being an issue so was prepped for this.

When we got to site someone was on our pitch, I tried to call the owners, (there's no one on site), but the phone went to voicemail so I left a message asking for a callback which I never got. On speaking with other people on site including the one on our pitch they all had this issue where they had been told they were on a certain pitch only to find someone there. So they found another pitch which is what we did. This leaves people at risk of nasty arguments and issues which luckily we didn't have but there is that risk and I think with proper site management this would be reduced.

It's a nice site with potential but lack of communication is a problem. Also on the day we left a dumper turned up and poured a load of soil on what we understood to be the path to the beach.

    Also please empty the bins.

Location was great. Right on the beach.

    Disliked:

The path to the chemical toilets at the front of the cabin. People walking by in the morning while having breakfast with buckets of human waste was not pleasant.
Not enough plates for no of guests...1 plate....1 bowl. 2 guests.
Cloths but no cleaning products for toilets or to clean dishes. No brush and shovel to sweep up....sand everywhere.
No kitchenette....just kettle toaster and fridge.
No wifi details in cabin and no wifi on seach bit it is featured.
    No one on site.
Called to discuss before we left. Noone could come see us but advised on phone. We were advised this would be taken onboard and offered a return stay at 50% off within 12 months. Advised to email. Emailed 3 times and text but got no response. For £185 for 2 nights, its expensive considering the above which could be easily fixed..

We loved the place itself and to fix these things would mean we would keep coming back but ignoring all my emails is just poor customer service. Its now been 3 weeks and I have held off writing this review because they had taken on my feedback and offered to resolve it. So disappointed.

From the manager...

First of all please accept our apologies for our late response to your emails. The last few weeks have been incredibly busy, but this is no excuse for not replying timeously.

We’re delighted you liked the pod, we’ve taken onboard the points you made and these are being addressed.

With regards to your point about the chemical waste disposal. Unfortunately, due to the COVID-19 situation we could not open the toilet and shower block at Muasdale this year and we have been only accepting self-contained tourers. While we understand why you found this unpleasant this will not be the situation going forward as we look to make improvements to the site as a whole.

Local attractions

Get ready to go a-sailing… and along to Campbeltown for regular boat trips to Ailsa Craig, Sanda Island and around the peninsula for wildlife and whale watching. On damp days, take the kids to seek refuge at the small soft play, the swimming pool or the oldest cinema in Scotland. Forest and hill walks are a short distance from the site.

A boat also goes to Ballycastle from here via Islay: from there, take a ferry back over water to reach the fab and tiny RSPB reserve of Rathlin Island (here there be puffins).

Are you a golfer? And if so, have you ever hit a ball over the Atlantic? If your responses here were first Aye and then a wistful Nay, take the tees to Machrihanish Golf Club above the northern tip of the Mull of Kintyre to try it out. Several other golf courses are in the area once this has whetted your golfing whistle: try Carradale and Dunaverty to start things off.

This is also whisky land, with the two distilleries of Glen Scotia and Springbank in Campbeltown. Both have gift shops (huzzah) and run regular tours.
