5 Acres: A small group happily pitched up on the field

General

  • Flat and grassy five-acre site deep in the Somerset Levels
  • A 15-minute drive from Taunton; Barrington Court 20 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site with easy access from the A378

As you'd expect from a site with such a name, there's a whole lot of space in which to relax and explore at 5 Acres, a large grassy site in the Somerset Levels.

Kids and dogs are both welcome on site here, and there's plenty of scope for them to run about and play games safely away from barbecues and campfires (which are also permitted to keep you warm and fed in the evenings). Facilities on site include firepits, a toilet and shower block and outdoor sinks with mains water.

The surrounding Somerset Levels aren’t just out in the sticks – they also produce them. Willow cane has been cultivated the traditional way in this part of the county for hundreds of years and can be seen growing within a mile of 5 Acres. The Levels are also a wildlife haven, making them an all-round top choice for country walks along the many trails nearby.

And while this may be a rural retreat, it's also one that's easy to get to as it's just off the A378 (no winding country lanes to negotiate for this one…) Taunton town centre, with its wide range of shops and supermarkets, is a 15-minute drive away. The closest pub and coffee shop are five minutes away by road.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

This is a quiet site: no music is allowed.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

There is no reception on-site: on arrival please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

Open grass area for my children to explore and the pitch size was amazing .
No one behind or in front just open views and one way system .
Every one was aware if children playing so drove slowly .
    Good fire pits .
Host was very approachable and helpful always about
There was a list off item he has for sale , basic hygiene .
Logs and kids pistols to entertain etc .

There is a double decker bus on site ?
It would be nice if I was open and had book donations etc in it and if ghe weather is bad you could let the older child sit and chill out small chest freezer to put ice creams in or chill drinks if your camping code padlock on it .

Would visit again and I would like to be able to go off and walk and visit more next time or use the hobbit hut with no kids what a treat

We love everything about this place!
This spot gets it right - A friendly welcome, large pitch, clean and modern facilities inside the coolest horse box I’ve ever seen, hay field for the kids to hide and play in, clear starry skies to camp under and camp fires to cosy round. A little piece of heaven!

Beautiful meadow in the middle so not looking into anyone else’s tents, warm welcome from owner on arrival, amazing showers & toilets in converted horse box - pure luxury and spotlessly clean. Fire pit, no light pollution so incredible star gazing! Lots of sinks with drinking water. Electric pitches near toilet facilities.

    Disliked:

No handrail to toilets on very steep ramp, no facilities for freezer blocks, road quite noisy at night and a dog barking at all hours of the night (came from direction of owners house but not sure if it was theirs).

Local attractions

First time in the West Country? Get your bearings at the Museum of Somerset (15 minutes' drive), a family-friendly local history exhibit housed in the grand surrounds of Taunton Castle. Other history-infused haunts, like National Trust-managed Barrington Court (20 minutes) and Coleridge's Cottage (40 minutes), are also pretty sure to help you get a feel for the place. Already a maven in all things southwestern? Skip the history lesson and get straight out for rambles in the Quantock Hills (20 minutes).

The coast is also within range, whether you opt to head north to the Bristol Channel for swims at Kilve beach (40 minutes) or a trip to Watchet arcade (40 minutes) or south to Lyme Regis (45 minutes) on Dorset's Jurassic Coast.

If you're looking to branch out from your common and garden holiday attractions, take a closer look at the traditional willow products on display at Coates English Willow Visitor Centre (10 minutes). More local produce can be inspected (and tasted) at promisingly named Sheppy's House of Cider (15 minutes), a well-established Somerset firm where you can analyse dry, medium and sweet varieties.

Must see

  • Montacute House (11.3 miles)
  • Clarks Village (12.6 miles)
  • Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (13.2 miles)
