5 Acres: A small group happily pitched up on the field

General

  • Flat and grassy five-acre site deep in the Somerset Levels
  • A 15-minute drive from Taunton; Barrington Court 20 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site with easy access from the A378

As you'd expect from a site with such a name, there's a whole lot of space in which to relax and explore at 5 Acres, a large grassy site in the Somerset Levels.

Kids and dogs are both welcome on site here, and there's plenty of scope for them to run about and play games safely away from barbecues and campfires (which are also permitted to keep you warm and fed in the evenings). Facilities on site include firepits, a toilet and shower block and outdoor sinks with mains water.

The surrounding Somerset Levels aren’t just out in the sticks – they also produce them. Willow cane has been cultivated the traditional way in this part of the county for hundreds of years and can be seen growing within a mile of 5 Acres. The Levels are also a wildlife haven, making them an all-round top choice for country walks along the many trails nearby.

And while this may be a rural retreat, it's also one that's easy to get to as it's just off the A378 (no winding country lanes to negotiate for this one…) Taunton town centre, with its wide range of shops and supermarkets, is a 15-minute drive away. The closest pub and coffee shop are five minutes away by road.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality flashlight with them as parts of the park are unlit.

This is a quiet park: no music is allowed.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Please note that the toilet/shower facilities are unisex.

There is no reception building on-site: on arrival please contact the number provided on your booking confirmation.

A lovely peaceful site, with clean facilities & the owner was very helpful, friendly & accommodating.

The toilets & showers were in a converted horse box, & very clean & high end. We loved them

The site was very quite, clean, with a huge unmowed are in the centre for wildlife & burrowing animals, we saw rabbits whilst there. We loved this concept.

It almost felt like wild camping.
There were washing up stations & bins provided, as well as an EHU area if you require it.

Each pitch has its own fire pit included, you just need to bring your own wood ect

They also had a beautiful hobbit hut tuck away in a very charming setting for hire.

We loved our stay thank you & would recommend

From the manager...

Hi,
Thanks for the nice comments. Logs are available to purchase along with a few other essentials, but we aren't big enough to warrant an onsite shop.

Far enough out the way to enjoy some peace and quiet yet a short drive to pub/town if needed. Toilets and showers were clean and tidy. Pitchs are clear my marked out and far enough apart not to encroach on others. Fire pit great addition. Message from owners regarding pitch number and directions was a nice touch. Logs, etc for fire pit available on site (or a short drive away at garage like we did)

    Disliked:

Disliked is a strong word here. I would say improvements could be made. (Sink nearer opposite site of field, Pitch 8). Can have noise of cars travelling down roads but wasn’t too loud.

From the manager...

We were going to fit a couple more sinks this year but the ground was so hard we only managed the one near pitch 5. There will be more added as soon as we have a bit of rain.

PS, I'm going to use you aerial pic if that's OK.

Really lovely, down to earth hosts! I received a text the morning of our trip to let me know our pitch number and directions to the site. The pitch sizes are generous and the facilities were great - the toilets were immaculate and similar to that of a hotel!

There are cleaning and drinking water stations every couple of pitches and they also have a rubbish bin and recycling box. Both the rubbish and recycling were emptied often!

    Disliked:

Not a dislike, however it is worth mentioning that there is no natural shade on the site. We were there during the heat wave and didn't get any natural shade until early evening.

Local attractions

First time in the West Country? Get your bearings at the Museum of Somerset (15 minutes' drive), a family-friendly local history exhibit housed in the grand surrounds of Taunton Castle. Other history-infused haunts, like National Trust-managed Barrington Court (20 minutes) and Coleridge's Cottage (40 minutes), are also pretty sure to help you get a feel for the place. Already a maven in all things southwestern? Skip the history lesson and get straight out for rambles in the Quantock Hills (20 minutes).

The coast is also within range, whether you opt to head north to the Bristol Channel for swims at Kilve beach (40 minutes) or a trip to Watchet arcade (40 minutes) or south to Lyme Regis (45 minutes) on Dorset's Jurassic Coast.

If you're looking to branch out from your common and garden holiday attractions, take a closer look at the traditional willow products on display at Coates English Willow Visitor Centre (10 minutes). More local produce can be inspected (and tasted) at promisingly named Sheppy's House of Cider (15 minutes), a well-established Somerset firm where you can analyse dry, medium and sweet varieties.

Must see

  • Montacute House (18.1 kilometres)
