The Hobbit House

Hobbit house with outdoor cooking area
Fully enclosed 625m2 pitch

  • Flat and grassy five-acre site deep in the Somerset Levels
  • A 15-minute drive from Taunton; Barrington Court 20 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site with easy access from the A378
As you'd expect from a site with such a name, there's a whole lot of space in which to relax and explore at 5 Acres, a large grassy site in the Somerset Levels. Kids and dogs are both welcome on site here, and there's plenty of scope for them to run about and play games safely away from barbecues and campfires (which are also permitted to keep you warm and fed in the evenings). Facilities on site include firepits, a toilet and shower block and outdoor sinks with mains water. The surrounding Somerset Levels aren’t just out in the sticks – they also produce them. Willow cane has been cultivated the traditional way in this part of the county for hundreds of years and can be seen growing within a mile of 5 Acres. The Levels are also a wildlife haven, making them an all-round top choice for country walks along the many trails nearby. And while this may be a rural retreat, it's also one that's easy to get to as it's just off the A378 (no winding country lanes to negotiate for this one…) Taunton town centre, with its wide range of shops and supermarkets, is a 15-minute drive away. The closest pub and coffee shop are five minutes away by road.

Unpowered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Flat area for pitches and grass mown well so that it was pleasant underfoot (I have visited some sites where the grass is too long for comfort).
Excellent and clean toilet and shower facilities.
Lots of washing up stations and access to fresh water.
Decent spacing between pitches.

Disliked There was a little noise from traffic on the road nearby but it wasn't excessive.

Premier powered grass tent or motorhome site (private bathroom amenities)

Liked The completely secluded and gated off pitch with your own private dining room kitchen bathroom and toilets was a true eye-opener to camping with young children. Everything was so clean Theo was anything but accommodating and even blended us an extension lead so we could blow our bed. I will be returning with my family again to this exact site as it was so quiet and beautiful there were lots of great dog walks from the campsite and local amenities that are only 10 to 15 minutes away.
There is very limited connectivity at the campsite, which was a really welcomed inconvenience It really allowed us to disconnect and relax over the weekend!

Powered grass tent or motorhome site

Liked Our recent stay at 5 Acres Campsite was fantastic! Tucked away in a peaceful, scenic setting, this campsite offers the perfect blend of comfort and the outdoors.

The grounds are spacious and each pitch had plenty of room and privacy, and the layout made it feel like we had the place to ourselves (even though we did most of our stay)Whether you’re in a tent or camper, you’ll find the setup thoughtful and user-friendly.

We especially appreciated the warm welcome from the staff, who were very friendly.

The amenities were great: clean toilets and showers, and a fire pit.The atmosphere was relaxed and dog friendly.

If you’re looking for a quiet, nature-filled getaway with just the right amount of creature comforts, 5 Acres Campsite is definitely recommended.

Local attractions

First time in the West Country? Get your bearings at the Museum of Somerset (15 minutes' drive), a family-friendly local history exhibit housed in the grand surrounds of Taunton Castle. Other history-infused haunts, like National Trust-managed Barrington Court (20 minutes) and Coleridge's Cottage (40 minutes), are also pretty sure to help you get a feel for the place. Already a maven in all things southwestern? Skip the history lesson and get straight out for rambles in the Quantock Hills (20 minutes). The coast is also within range, whether you opt to head north to the Bristol Channel for swims at Kilve beach (40 minutes) or a trip to Watchet arcade (40 minutes) or south to Lyme Regis (45 minutes) on Dorset's Jurassic Coast. If you're looking to branch out from your common and garden holiday attractions, take a closer look at the traditional willow products on display at Coates English Willow Visitor Centre (10 minutes). More local produce can be inspected (and tasted) at promisingly named Sheppy's House of Cider (15 minutes), a well-established Somerset firm where you can analyse dry, medium and sweet varieties.
