  • Flat and grassy five-acre site on the edge of the Somerset Levels
  • A 15-minute drive from Taunton; Barrington Court 20 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site with easy access from the A378
As you'd expect from a site with such a name, there's a whole lot of space in which to relax and explore at 5 Acres, a large grassy site on the edge of the Somerset Levels. Kids and dogs are both welcome on site here, and there's plenty of scope for them to run about and play games safely away from barbecues and campfires (which are also permitted to keep you warm and fed in the evenings). Facilities on site include firepits, a toilet and shower block and outdoor sinks with mains water. The surrounding Somerset Levels aren’t just out in the sticks – they also produce them. Willow cane has been cultivated the traditional way in this part of the county for hundreds of years and can be seen growing within a mile of 5 Acres. the Levels are also a wildlife haven, making them an all-round top choice for country walks along the many trails nearby. If wild swimming is something you're always keen to do, good news on that front too. 5 Acres is just a 10-minute drive away from the river in Langport, which is popular for both wild swimming and kayaking. And while this may be a rural retreat, it's also one that's easy to get to as it's just off the A378 (no winding country lanes to negotiate for this one…). Taunton town centre, with its wide range of shops and supermarkets, is a 15-minute drive away. The closest pub and coffee shop are five minutes away by road.

What customers say

This peaceful campground has roomy, level sites with fire pits and handy dishwashing stations. Guests love the unique, clean horsebox showers/toilets, especially the hot water and good pressure. Enclosed, dog-friendly sites are a hit. While some note occasional road noise or less hot water for dishes, friendly hosts and the quiet, natural setting make for a highly recommended, relaxing stay.

Powered grass tent or RV campsite (premium, Private restroom amenities)

Liked This is a beautiful campsite. The private kitchen and bathroom were Spotless, and made camping with our anxious dog so much easier.

The completely enclosed private space is huge and gave my dog, and daughter so much room to play in.

There is also access to some beautiful local walks.

As soon as the booking opens for next year, we will be coming back.

Liked Great site 😃 perfect for us and our little dog.
Good size pitches.
Fire pit on each pitch although due to heatwave we couldn't use but still a nice touch.
Easy location
Clean loos and showers in a quirky lorry.
Will definitely be back again.

Fully-enclosed powered grass tent or RV campsite

Liked We chose 5 Acres as extremely convenient, only 15 mins from where we needed to be to get solar panels put on our recently purchased VW camper. It was our maiden adventure with our Labrador so being able to have the very large enclosed pitch was a real bonus with it’s own electric, water, quirky pot wash facility, bin and waste. There’s also a few countryside walks right from the campsite which we thoroughly enjoyed so no need to drive anywhere. The unisex shower and toilet facilities were very quirky also, a colourful converted horse lorry, three toilets and 2 showers. The water was always lovely and hot. The site was very quiet when we were there so we didn’t ever have to wait for either which was great, not sure how having only that amount works if site busy! There’s solar lighting in the toilet section so useable during the night but not in the shower section, so after the first night going for a shower when it was dark and not being able to, we made sure we showered during daylight hours! The couple that own it are very nice, friendly and there if you needed as live next door, we didn’t so all good.

Disliked I don’t ever like to put negatives but the 3 toilets were, how can I say, not very inviting, a few iffy curries had been eater I think! They’re not cleaned daily, when we arrived on the Monday they were bad and eventually they were cleaned, little bins emptied and hand towel changed on the Thursday! That was our only dislike. Facilities really should be cleaned daily especially if unisex!

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked This is a fantastic site. Perfectly placed as a stop off for me, on route to Dorset. Field was spacious, pitches around the circumference and it happened to be just me and another camper in the enclosed camping spot. Outside washing up areas dotted around too. Really well thought out site.
Facilities really good, in a fixed truck ! Very clean and nice hot showers.
Really impressive . It was only £12 booking ahead. Thank you

Primitive grass tent or RV campsite

Liked Lovely little site, and nearby to us as we wanted to test our new campervan. Very quiet, nice quirky showers and toilets in a converted horsebox!

Disliked Other guests next to us refused to put their dog on a lead, which was very annoying. Not an issue for the campsite, as I appreciate not everyone follows the rules!

Fully-enclosed powered grass tent or RV campsite

Liked We had a lovely stay at 5 Acres Camping Site and this was our second time visiting. My partner and I & 2 of our friends stayed on one of the enclosed dog pitches, which was perfect for us and our dogs. The site was lovely and quiet, making it a really relaxing stay

The toilets and showers were kept lovely and clean, which is always a big plus\. The owners were really friendly, welcoming and chatty, which made us feel right at home.

We’ve really enjoyed both of our stays and will definitely be coming back again. Would highly recommend, especially if you’re looking for a peaceful, dog-friendly site!

Local attractions

First time in the West Country? Get your bearings at the Museum of Somerset (15 minutes' drive), a family-friendly local history exhibit housed in the grand surrounds of Taunton Castle. Other history-infused haunts, like National Trust-managed Barrington Court (20 minutes) and Coleridge's Cottage (40 minutes), are also pretty sure to help you get a feel for the place. Already a maven in all things southwestern? Skip the history lesson and get straight out for rambles in the Quantock Hills (20 minutes). The coast is also within range, whether you opt to head north to the Bristol Channel for swims at Kilve beach (40 minutes) or a trip to Watchet arcade (40 minutes) or south to Lyme Regis (45 minutes) on Dorset's Jurassic Coast. If you're looking to branch out from your common and garden holiday attractions, take a closer look at the traditional willow products on display at Coates English Willow Visitor Centre (10 minutes). More local produce can be inspected (and tasted) at promisingly named Sheppy's House of Cider (15 minutes), a well-established Somerset firm where you can analyse dry, medium and sweet varieties.
