5 Acres: Space to enjoy, with outdoor sinks and portaloos. Pitch where you like.

General

  • Flat and grassy five-acre site deep in the Somerset Levels
  • A 15-minute drive from Taunton; Barrington Court 20 minutes
  • Dog-friendly site with easy access from the A378

This spacious site is such a super spot that you may well want it all to yourself. As it happens, if you plump for these flat and grassy 5 Acres, you and your gang will have exclusive rights to roam, pitch up and relax here for the duration of your stay.

As you'd expect from a site with such ample acreage, there's plenty of space for parking, so it's simple to hire the place out for family shindigs or group get-togethers. Folks heading here are welcome to either bring their own toilet or have a chat with the site staff, who can sort out portaloo hire. They're also able to hire out tables, chairs and take you for tours around a secret garden where there's a summerhouse and fountain to admire.

The surrounding Somerset Levels aren’t just out in the sticks – they also produce them. Willow cane has been cultivated the traditional way in this part of the county for hundreds of years and can be seen growing within a mile of 5 Acres. The Levels are also a wildlife haven, making them an all-round top choice for country walks (with a well-behaved dog, if you've brought one).

Taunton town centre and its wide range of shops and supermarkets is a 15-minute drive away. The closest pub and coffee shop are five minutes away by road.

Please note

This is a quiet park: no music is allowed.

If making a fire, the fuel, logs and coal have to be purchased on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Bookings must not be for more than 10 consecutive nights.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

This site has no on-site shower facilities.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Continental touring caravans (caravans built with the door on the right-hand side) are not permitted.

From the manager...

We hope to be changing the loo situation soon although the local council will not allow composting loos as this is an environmentally sensitive area. Don't forget that you can pitch anywhere in the 5 acre field if you do not require electric, so you can be far from the road if you choose.

We had a fabulous stay at the hobbit house, the attention to detail of the house was amazing. The beautiful flowers placed in the house and outside, the marshmallows, wood for fire, the picnic basket everthing has been thought of. The garden, secret garden it was perfect. We even enjoyed having barely any phone signal.

Beautiful location. Well spaced pitches and facilities close by. No pressure to keep dogs on lead, not overlooked by anyone else so very relaxed. Provision of kindling and wood for a fire was thoughtful. We were greeted and given all the information we needed + advice on dog walks but then left to ourselves.

Local attractions

First time in the West Country? Get your bearings at the Museum of Somerset (15 minutes' drive), a family-friendly local history exhibit housed in the grand surrounds of Taunton Castle. Other history-infused haunts, like National Trust-managed Barrington Court (20 minutes) and Coleridge's Cottage (40 minutes), are also pretty sure to help you get a feel for the place. Already a maven in all things southwestern? Skip the history lesson and get straight out for rambles in the Quantock Hills (20 minutes).

The coast is also within range, whether you opt to head north to the Bristol Channel for swims at Kilve beach (40 minutes) or a trip to Watchet arcade (40 minutes) or south to Lyme Regis (45 minutes) on Dorset's Jurassic Coast.

If you're looking to branch out from your common and garden holiday attractions, take a closer look at the traditional willow products on display at Coates English Willow Visitor Centre (10 minutes). More local produce can be inspected (and tasted) at promisingly named Sheppy's House of Cider (15 minutes), a well-established Somerset firm where you can analyse dry, medium and sweet varieties.

Must see

  • Montacute House (18.1 kilometers)
  • Clarks Village (20.3 kilometers)
  • Blackdown Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (21.3 kilometers)

National Trust

  • Barrington Court (8.4 kilometers)
  • Priest's House (10.0 kilometers)
