The beautiful lake

  • Well-maintained peaceful lakeside site on a farm in Litton Cheney
  • A 15-minute drive to Jurassic Coast beaches; half an hour to Weymouth
  • Café on site, plus lake for swimming and watersports
Litton Lakes is a family-run Dorset lakeside site with spacious pitches and a modern shower block on a working farm in the pretty village of Litton Cheney. The area is something of a walkers’ paradise, with direct access to a network of footpaths and bridleways, and a dog-walking field just next to the site for any four-legged pals that haven’t had enough of a stretch. If you’d rather set out on two wheels you may like to note that National Cycle Route 2 passes the entrance to the site (and it’s suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities). Back at base after any such outings, guests can get some more activity in by launching their paddleboards or kayaks on the lake, taking a dip in the fresh water or simply settling down to admire the far-reaching countryside views (firepits can be hired and logs are available to buy if you need a bit of warmth to help you dry off after a dip). And if what you really need is some sustenance? The site’s own Purple Turtle Café (open Friday to Sunday) should be your first port of call, for splendid cakes accompanied by cups of tea and freshly brewed coffee by the lake. You’re also welcome to light barbecues for bigger meals, or you might like to take a stroll down to the local pub, five minutes’ walk away. This is a peaceful and family-friendly site that’s particularly attractive for those with an interest in photography as there’s some gorgeous scenery to snap nearby. It’s also in an area of very low light pollution, so stargazing should be on the schedule too if possible.

What customers say

Litton Lakes is praised for its beautiful location, friendly staff, and spacious pitches. The lake is a major highlight, popular for swimming and paddleboarding, with a cafe and nearby pub also well-received. Facilities are generally clean, though some guests noted issues with water pressure and a lack of lights in the toilet block. While many enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, some found it too busy or noisy, particularly with large groups. There's a consensus that improvements to toilet and shower facilities would be beneficial.

Liked We love Litton lakes, we’ve visited lots with day passes but this was our first camping stay.

Easy to check in, the new toilet block is smart and a welcome addition.

The new jetty and edging to the lake is really smart.

Disliked The cafe prices are I the expensive side with a limited menu. Coffee isn’t great either.

Lots of the taps didn’t work in the new toilet block. I think at one point only 2 taps out of 6 worked.

The jetty needs some bone slip gripping on it, we watched numerous children hit the deck very hard, including one child smacking their head. Please supervise your children in this as it gets so slippery.

A couple of noises campers.

Liked Camp was lovely clean and quiet. Staff were lovely. The lake was a big bonus.

Disliked Signage for amenities could be a little clearer as it wasn't until we were leaving we found there were toilets closer to our pitch than the ones we were using.

Liked The beautiful location and lake. Easy check in and booking.

Clean toilet and shower facilities

Lake a little cafe on site

Disliked The showers were really hit and miss. It seemed that if someone was washing up the showers would trickle, not ideal if you have a head full of shampoo to wash outs but when the showers were good they were great

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The cafe and the lake are great, we spent the whole day at the lake paddle boarding.
The toilets and showers are clean and there are plenty available for the size of the site.

Disliked The only issue was with the water pressure so sometimes the water would stop completely in the showers!

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Really friendly welcome and the facilities were clean and modern but still had a campsite rural charm. The lake was obviously the main feature and we had beautiful weather. The car was really chilled. Pitches were nice and flat and the other guests were all respectful and the site had lovely views.

Disliked There was a lot of floating algae in the lake which in my mind could have been cleared, I understand that it provides oxygen and a platoon for creatures but nonetheless there was a lot of it. The options available in the cafe were limited, essentially a bacon sandwich or toasted sandwich’s only. It did take a while to receive my coffee too, despite there being few customers.

Liked Lovely site with friendly greeting from staff on arrival. Beautiful pleasure lake and decent facilities. So much joy and laugher in the air, mainly from older kids, really nice to have something to do for this age range (mostly 8-14 I recon).

Disliked Cafe was over priced and not serving food until 10am. Bit too late for breakfast for us. Would prefer a simpler set up serving good coffee and bacon sarnies from 8am. It was all very nice and fancy, but not really what we needed in the morning.

Local attractions

Need a tipple to top off your evening by the lake? Take a 10-minute walk along to the village’s very own vineyard, Bride Valley Vineyard, for tours, tastings and a bottle or two to sip while the sun goes down. (If you’re more of a beer drinker, you’ll need to take the 15-minute drive to Palmers Brewery, which also runs excellent tours.) Time for the beach? Take your pick from the scenic offerings of West Bay and Burton Bradstock (both 15 minutes’ drive) and the 18-mile shingle stretch at Chesil Beach (half an hour), or head off to Weymouth (half an hour) to see the Sandworld sand sculptures and ogle the underwater beasts at the Sea Life Centre. Away from the coast, top days out might take you to Abbotsbury Swannery and gardens (20 minutes) or to explore the Teddy Bear Museum, Dinosaur Museum and Maiden Castle Iron Age fort in Dorchester (half an hour).
