Litton Lakes: Watersports on Litton Lakes

General

  • Well-maintained peaceful lakeside site on a farm in Litton Cheney
  • A 15-minute drive to Jurassic Coast beaches; half an hour to Weymouth
  • Café on site, plus lake for swimming and watersports

Litton Lakes is a family-run Dorset lakeside site with spacious pitches on a working farm in the pretty village of Litton Cheney.

The area is something of a walkers’ paradise, with direct access to a network of footpaths and bridleways, and a dog-walking field just next to the site for any four-legged pals that haven’t had enough of a stretch. If you’d rather set out on two wheels you may like to note that National Cycle Route 2 passes the entrance to the site (and it’s suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities).

Back at base after any such outings, guests can sign up for more activity with paddleboarding and kayaking on the lake, do a bit of fishing, take a dip in the fresh water or simply settle down to admire the far-reaching countryside views (firepits can be hired and logs are available to buy if you need a bit of warmth to help you dry off after a dip).

And if what you really need is some sustenance? The site’s own Purple Turtle Café should be your first port of call, for splendid cakes accompanied by cups of tea and freshly brewed coffee by the lake. You’re also welcome to light barbecues for bigger meals, or you might like to take a stroll down to the local pub, five minutes’ walk away.

This is a peaceful and family-friendly site that’s particularly attractive for those with an interest in photography as there’s some gorgeous scenery to snap nearby. It’s also in an area of very low light pollution, so stargazing should be on the schedule too if possible.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Flat ground, no need for ramps, great walks, peaceful, large pitches, friendly people

    Disliked:

Features didn’t live up to promise, new toilet and shower block was satisfactory, owners private party took priority so publicised cafe was closed, lake was not so clean and very small for paddleboarding. If we had paid 30% less we would have been very happy, but facilities were just not worth the extra

The site is beautiful. We stayed mid week in September and found it to be quiet and relaxed with generously sized pitches for our VW camper. We were welcomed warmly when we arrived and invited to pick our own pitch.

The facilities (2 showers, 3 toilet cubicles) were spotlessly clean throughout our stay- lovely hot showers but be aware there’s no hot water to the hand wash sinks or washing up point. I can imagine on a busy week in the night of summer the toilets & showers may struggle to cope with volume of people, but we had no issues at all midweek in Sept.

I swam in the lake- it was beautiful. I would definitely bring my paddleboard too next time :)
The cafe looked lovely but was not open while we were there (mid week, mid September so understandable!)

Location is perfect for exploring the area- really easy to get out and about.

As other reviewers have mentioned, the stargazing on a clear night was amazing!

I would recommend bringing a head torch as the site is gloriously “off grid” so not lit after dark.
