The beautiful lake

  • Well-maintained peaceful lakeside site on a farm in Litton Cheney
  • A 15-minute drive to Jurassic Coast beaches; half an hour to Weymouth
  • Café on site, plus lake for swimming and watersports
Litton Lakes is a family-run Dorset lakeside site with spacious pitches on a working farm in the pretty village of Litton Cheney. The area is something of a walkers’ paradise, with direct access to a network of footpaths and bridleways, and a dog-walking field just next to the site for any four-legged pals that haven’t had enough of a stretch. If you’d rather set out on two wheels you may like to note that National Cycle Route 2 passes the entrance to the site (and it’s suitable for cyclists of all ages and abilities). Back at base after any such outings, guests can get some more activity in by launching their paddleboards or kayaks on the lake, taking a dip in the fresh water or simply settling down to admire the far-reaching countryside views (firepits can be hired and logs are available to buy if you need a bit of warmth to help you dry off after a dip). And if what you really need is some sustenance? The site’s own Purple Turtle Café (open every day but Tuesday and Wednesday for most of the year, and every day during the summer holidays) should be your first port of call, for splendid cakes accompanied by cups of tea and freshly brewed coffee by the lake. You’re also welcome to light barbecues for bigger meals, or you might like to take a stroll down to the local pub, five minutes’ walk away. This is a peaceful and family-friendly site that’s particularly attractive for those with an interest in photography as there’s some gorgeous scenery to snap nearby. It’s also in an area of very low light pollution, so stargazing should be on the schedule too if possible.

What customers say

This well-maintained campsite is set in a beautiful rural location with a stunning lake, ideal for swimming and paddleboarding. Visitors praise the friendly and helpful staff, spacious pitches, and clean facilities, including new toilet and shower blocks. The on-site cafe and nearby pub are also popular. While most reviews are positive, some mention inconsistent water pressure in showers and the need for more facilities during peak times. The site is highly recommended for a relaxing family break.

Bell tent (basic)

Liked We had a wonderful stay at Litton Lakes.

We hired the bell tent, and unfortunately couldn’t have our fire pit due to the government ban but they were very accommodating and gave us some cafe credits instead.

It was so peaceful, everyone was really friendly. The camp was clean. the lake was beautiful, we hired a kayak which was super easy.

My older two loved exploring and my
youngest enjoyed the park so there really is something for everyone!

Disliked Extended hours on the cafe would be lovely, open slightly earlier for coffees in the morning.

Maybe a food truck could come of an evening too for hot food? but this may have been more of a struggle
on our stay due to not being able to bbq (no ones fault)

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Second visit to Litton Lakes, although the first was a few years ago! Delighted to see that the campsite was so popular and that it has been improved since our last visit (was nothing wrong before but they’ve clearly reinvested in the site) - new toilet & shower block, lake has concrete edging and new jetties etc.
Love it here and we will no doubt return again before too long. Lake was hugely popular in the sunshine, paddle boards got plenty of use.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Absolutely beautiful campsite, the staff are extremely helpful and friendly. The lake is gorgeous and my children had so much fun in it at all hours! The toilets and showers are always being cleaned and this is noticeable. The pub which isn’t too far of a walk away and was recommended by the staff.

Disliked The showers are very very cold and they do spray everywhere too, making it hard to wash children after swimming in the lake.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked Such a lovely lake! We all really enjoyed being able to come and go plus the views were lovely. The cafe was great, shame it wasn't open for longer! Facilities fab and well maintained. Staff were lovely, I think the site manager was called Sarah, she was really friendly and helpful. Very on it stopping people from using a BBQ.

Disliked Lots of large groups were staying, they had very noisy parties both nights! Kids were left to scream around the site and ride up and down on bikes till late. Loud conversations all night. Not somewhere to stay if you'd like a peaceful camp as the pitches are close together. Completely understand that's how it is sometimes, just worth being aware.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked We only booked for one night as our first tentative family camping trip, it was absolutely perfect..great facilities, tidy, beautiful lake and didn't feel crowded even though it was peak season. Our only regret was only booking one night.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The lake, the clean facilities, the size (didn’t feel too busy), easy check-in, friendliness of staff.

Disliked The lack of available food options at the park and surrounding areas. Would have been 10 stars for more option.

Non-electric grass pitch

Liked The facilities have been hugely improved including the number of toilets and showers. Access to the lake has also improved - it is a wonderful facility.
Although we visited during a busy August weekend, the restricted numbers and introduction of wrist bands meant it didn't feel too crowded or busy. We had an excellent stay and can't wait to go again!

Bell tent (basic)

Liked The general area but don't go here if you like waking up to see open spaces and savour peace and quiet.
The children loved the water but hated the crowds.

Disliked Too many tents, too close together, not enough individual space, pitches next to dusty road, lack of shade. The cafe very small, noisy with piped music, limited menu, lack of fresh fruit and salad. This is not a rural retreat.
Lake is small

Local attractions

Need a tipple to top off your evening by the lake? Take a 10-minute walk along to the village’s very own vineyard, Bride Valley Vineyard, for tours, tastings and a bottle or two to sip while the sun goes down. (If you’re more of a beer drinker, you’ll need to take the 15-minute drive to Palmers Brewery, which also runs excellent tours.) Time for the beach? Take your pick from the scenic offerings of West Bay and Burton Bradstock (both 15 minutes’ drive) and the 18-mile shingle stretch at Chesil Beach (half an hour), or head off to Weymouth (half an hour) to see the Sandworld sand sculptures and ogle the underwater beasts at the Sea Life Centre. Away from the coast, top days out might take you to Abbotsbury Swannery and gardens (20 minutes) or to explore the Teddy Bear Museum, Dinosaur Museum and Maiden Castle Iron Age fort in Dorchester (half an hour).
