General

  • Within strolling distance of Cerne Abbas village
  • Treasure trails and coast and countryside walks just steps away
  • A mile from three pubs, a tearoom and a well-stocked village shop

Warning! A trip to ancient Cerne Abbas may leave you with a mammoth yearning to never leave: the Dorset village has been described as the ‘Britain’s most desirable village’ to live among the UK’s scenic many. It’s six miles from Dorchester, minutes from the Jurassic Coast and, most famously, is where the 180ft Cerne Abbas Giant doth dwelleth high up on the hillside. (Yes, the naughty giant with no sense of shyness.)

Within strolling distance of Cerne Abbas is the mightily convenient Giants Head Caravan & Camping Park, a family and dog-friendly site over three and a half acres with grassy pitches, immense views over the Dorset countryside and thumping good access to the best of Dorset.

Coast and countryside coast walks as well as treasure trails literally start within steps of the pitches: Giants Head has several planned walks straight from the park, and runs Treasure Trails Dorset directly from it so intrepid guests can pick up one or two of the 50+ trail packs and take off on the hunt for hidden gems. Sounds like a towering amount of fun...

As befits its location, everything at Giants Head is kept nicely natural – think mature trees, hedgerows and trim lawns; and the level to gently sloping pitches vary between secluded, perched over views, shady or open (there’s also a special tail-wagging area for campers with canines). All parts of the park are well-drained and a hard road leads to pitches.

Amenities include showers, hand basins, laundry and washing-up areas; the park doesn’t have a shop, but a well-stocked village store, a tearoom and three pubs are in Cerne Abbas just over a mile away.

Please note

A charge of 50p applies for the use of shower.

Please note that a 20p charge for the use of a hairdryer (available in the ladies' only).

The staff were very friendly and helpful. The toilet and shower rooms were always clean. The site was well maintained and had beautiful views.

    Disliked:

The grass was a bit muddy but this was due to really bad weather that the owners could not control!

From the manager...

We are really pleased you enjoyed your stay with us even with the awful weather, at least you had one nice day. The views are spectacular when there is no mist.

We try and keep our facilities as clean as possible, can be a bit hard sometimes when it is wet and muddy.

Hope fully see you again soon, perhaps in the summer when it should be a bit dryer and warmer.

The friendly owners, the views and wilderness feeling, the shower was great, clean and tidy, tons of written information regarding the area.
We stayed during a full force gale! and enjoyed ourselves.

Thank you for your lovely comments. I am sorry the weather was so awful for your stay here, Hurricane Brian was a little wild during the night.

We do try and keep our facilities as clean as possible even with the rain and wellie boots. There is a lot to do and explore around West Dorset even when the weather is not so good.

Hope to see you both with your lovely caravan again soon. Good luck with the renovation.

Friendly staff, clean facilities, nice welcome pack, public footpaths and walks from campsite. Great for walkers!

    Disliked:

Wet and muddy trek into Cerne Abbas - be prepared for nettles and cows! Not able to walk to the pub for an evening pint, take a game or a car.

From the manager...

We are so pleased you enjoyed your stay with us. It is great for walkers with the Wessex Ridgeway going right through the site.

I am sorry that the Ridgeway was a bit muddy, unfortunately I have no control over the condition of this part of the footpath because it is not on our land. My farming neighbours are usually really good at maintaining the footpaths but with all the rain we have had recently it has been a little difficult.

The walk to Cerne Abbas is only a mile and a quarter and for those that don't fancy the walk back up the hill there is a good local taxi in the village.

Lovely welcome, with a super pack loaded with great infomation. Extra new shower block being build for next year. Would recomend for a rustic stay.

    Disliked:

Road can be quite noisy during the day, lot of farm tractor movement, but had a very nice sleep.

From the manager...

So pleased you enjoyed your stay with us, there are so many places to visit, our visitor pack has a few local places to visit but there are so so many more.

The shower block will be up and running very soon, we really wanted to have it ready for this year but we have had some unavoidable setbacks.

The road can be a bit busy in the morning and evening, our locals do tend to nip through here on their way to and from work, it is only a C road but better than the main A352.

It was a busy harvest time while you were here so there were a few tractors about, as long they didn't disturb you too much.

Look forward to seeing you again soon.

We are really pleased you enjoyed your stay with us at Giants Head. The site was fairly quiet while you were, as it is when the school holidays have come to an end and most children are back to school.

We try and make everyone's stay as pleasant and enjoyable as possible and provide a welcome back with lots of activities and places to visit.

Hopefully see you again soon.

Needs more toliets around the place instead of one area and uni sex tolets and showers instead of gendered

From the manager...

So pleased you enjoyed your stay with us.There was quite a lot of space when you were here so you could choose your pitch, it is always quiet after the children go back to school.

I assume you mean showers rather than toilets, as there are enough toilets in both the ladies and gents. The four new showers will be unisex but the current toilet/shower block will remain as it is, separate ladies and gents. Unisex toilets do not suit everyone.

Look forward to seeing you again soon.

only redeeming feature was dog walk!!

    Disliked:

1 shower for a very busy campsite with lots of children??? extremely tight shower unit and toilets, walls 'painted' in a disgusting splashed brown and black colour! we had to put our tent on bare mud, no separation between pitches, anything went, lost money in shower meter ( sign in shower read 'metre'!!!!),

From the manager...

I am so sorry that you did not enjoy your stay with us. I did my best to meet with all your requests including a quiet and private pitch, which was difficult as it was in the middle of the school holidays. I think you may be better in future staying on an adults only site or going on holiday out of season when there are no children on site to disturb you. I also sited you away from the toilets as you requested.

I do apologise for the one shower in the ladies and gents but as you could see a brand new shower block is near completion with four new showers. The walls are painted with a waterproof paint, so sorry it was not to your taste.

The site is a grass site but unfortunately the torrential rain we had while you were here did make some areas of the site wet and a little muddy, unfortunately I cannot control the weather.

There is a minimum space between units of at least 3 metres, there was no one sited close to you because I did my best to give you a quiet and private pitch.

I am sorry you lost your 50p in the meter, if you had asked I would have happily given you a refund.

We had a very large pitch area and the Ice Cream van in the evening was a god send for our children. Toilets were quite clean.

    Disliked:

Women's shower wasn't too pleasant but I belive there is a new shower block in the making. Didn't really appreciate the neighbours noise and music after 10pm.

From the manager...

I am pleased you enjoyed your couple of nights with us, and great that your children enjoyed Jens Icecreams.

We do our best to keep our toilet and shower block as clean as possible. Our new shower block will be up and running soon, we have unfortunately had some unavoidable delays in completing it.

If you had said about your noisy neighbours I would have come and asked them to quieten down if they were too noisy. i do walk around the site several times during the evening an usually hear anything too noisy.

toilet and shower block basic, only 1 shower for the men and ladies blocks.

From the manager...

So pleased you enjoyed your holiday with us and hope you enjoyed the Dorset County Show, hope you didn't get too wet.

We do provide an info pack with details of lots of things to do in the area, local pubs, shops and opening times and also some of our local Treasure Trails.

Local attractions

If you have giggling kids along with you – and even if you don’t – a trip to the well-endowed and world famous Cerne Abbas Giant is most visitors’ first stop, if only to buy a postcard (it’s been noted that postcards of the Giant are the only images of a naked man that can be sent via the Post Office). The man himself is now tended by the National Trust, which has a waymarked circular trail around the site from Cerne Abbas village.

Dorchester is an excellent early stop for urbanites and heritageheads: here you’ll find history-dedicated days out as varied as the Dinosaur Museum, Dorchester Museum, Teddy Bear Museum, Tutankhamen Exhibition and the Roman Amphitheatre; take the Durnovaria Town Walk for an outdoorly overview of the city’s main sights.

Thomas Hardy’s Cottage is at Dorchester too and the literary can book the Thomas Hardy Trail into their schedule, a six-mile circular walk within the Dorset Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Elsewhere around the area, take the enormous amount of things to see and do in your stride: from castles to dinosaurs, theme parks to heritage railways and historic houses to tank museums, the coast to countryside have whopping opps for days out (and in; dash to Dorchester’s West Dorset Leisure Centre on a rainy day when the kids need to let off steam).

Historic houses and gardens like Kingston Lacy, Athelhampton House and Minterne House and Gardens should suit the sedately inclined, while the less sedate (kids) will no doubt prefer chattering at the likes of Monkey World in Wareham, Adventure Wonderland at Christchurch or Sea Life near Weymouth. Both sorts should have a tanking good time at Bovington’s Tank Museum, the second biggest collection of armoured vehicles on the planet.

Head for the coast to fossil hunt or take a guided fossil tour at Lyme Regis or Charmouth; soak up sun and sights at seaside towns such as Weymouth, Swanage and Christchurch; float on a boat to the Channel Islands or potter around glorious Poole Harbour and epically beaut Brownsea Island, also managed by the National Trust.

The award-winning Swanage Railway is a gently relaxed way to see some of the sights of Dorset (including Famous Five inspiration Corfe Castle) and holds regular events including driving experiences and special days for children.
