Branscombe Airfield and Camping: Plane passing by our tent

General

  • Site with its own private airstrip with restored aircraft
  • Within easy reach of Branscombe beach, Seaton and Beer
  • Safe and enclosed play area; 2 games rooms; plenty of space for play

Branscombe Airfield and Camping is four miles from Sidmouth, Seaton and Beer, on the edge of Branscombe village and in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty on Lyme Bay.

The site has its own private airstrip, home to a range of vintage and classic aircraft including a Stearman PT-17 and a Zlín 526. The resident pilots and restoration team are happy to show guests the current lineup when they are available; you may also see occasional flight activity.

Branscombe has plenty of wide open space with views of Devon countryside and distant sea views. There are refurbished toilets and free showers, as well as a new utilities block; a washing-up area and a launderette with washing machine and tumble dryer.

There's also a safe and enclosed play area with plenty of space to play football and other outdoor activities, and a small indoor games room also available. Foodies will find two Good Pub Guide pubs within a mile and a half – one within a short 10-minute stroll.

Please note

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Limited Wifi is available (5G only).

Strong rock pegs are advised after spells of dry weather.

We arrived Friday for 3 ngts on an electric camper pitch with our dog! we were welcomed by Tracey & shown to our spacey pitch we felt at “ home” straight away, it was also great timing as the pizza wagon was in (on every Friday I believe) So super tasty Italian style pizza was a bonus after a long drive!

The site is super clean and tidy, and quiet, the showers & toilets are clean and really nice, especially the ones with a warm towel rail was a big bonus ;) .

There is a big penned in dog exercise space which was brilliant, our cockapoo got plenty of ball time - a really nice addition if you’re travelling with dogs!!

If you’re an airplane enthusiast then you get to see live action which is fun! and gave a nice sense of community as everyone walks up for take off landing! We happened to be there the same time as a sand buggy event so some residents put on an impromptu car & plane show !

Location wise - just stunning, we walked to Branscombe through the hills and coastal path, and you can easily walk to Sidmouth, Beer - just beautiful!

Highly recommend! They even have soya milk in the shop! Hope to visit again soon!

    Whats not to like!

Greeted by a friendly and lovely owner(Tracey) who guided us to our pitch(Plot 4) which she had chosen for us due to having a 4 year old with us. this pitch is MASSIVE with the added bonus of having a fence, tree lines and more importantly for our little one direct access to the owners garden which had an array of animals..she loved watching the ducks waddle around and was fascinated by the peacock!
Views from our pitch were pretty impressive aswell. even with its own picnic table which was a nice touch!
The toilet & shower block looked clean and well looked after.
The little park was a nice touch and although not having a dog myself the dog field is another plus for alot of people.
The owners were very friendly and helpful letting us know what was around the area and even recommended the donkey sanctuary on The one not so nice day we encountered which our daughter absolutely loved! especially Ruby.
The pizza on friday night was really good, my only issue is the sign said "Handmade Italian Pizza" it wasnt handmade and came out of a box which was a bit of a let down especially for the price.
All in all had a fantastic time and would definately recommend and visit again!

    Disliked:

the roads around the site but not really a dislike considering thats what most of Devon is about...and not really the owners fault either.

Tracey was fantastic. Incredibly communicative and accommodating. She made us feel very welcome and went out of her way to help. The amenities in the caravan were superb with basics such as tea, coffee and cooking oil all on hand so we could have a nice brew on arrival. We loved our short stay and have already recommended to friends and family.

Local attractions

Stay at Branscombe at the beginning of August to frolic at the world-famous Sidmouth Folk Week, or mosey along to this part of Devon at any time of year to ramble and rockpool on Branscombe Mouth beach, be tempted by tasty treats in the thatched roof restaurant or take a boat out to land some mackerel and pollock for supper.

Branscombe village has the Old Forge, the Old Bakery and the Norman St. Winifred Church to see, while the regency town of Sidmouth five miles to the west has a sauna, cinema, indoor pool, restaurants and gift shops as well as beaches for splashing and sunbathing.

The fishing village of Beer is nearby: this sheltered beach is the spot for catching the sun’s rays, and if you don’t want to angle yourself from a boat to cast off, you can buy some fresh fish on the beach before getting on your mining helmet to explore the Beer Quarry Caves or climbing the hill (sans helmet) to the model railway exhibition and gardens at Pecorama. Cavers and trainspotters can also try the Kents Cavern Underground Caves and the South Devon Railway, both at Torquay.

Devon day trips include browsing for lace in the market town of Honiton, taking a tram from Seaton along the River Axe for birdwatching at the estuary, fossil-hunting at Lyme Regis, history hunting in Exeter at Exeter Cathedral and wandering the National Trust walks over Exmoor and Dartmoor.

For the small fliers, the Crealy Adventure Park, Paignton Zoo and Plymouth’s National Marine Aquarium should have them soaring.
