Hidden Valley Park: Pitches for motorhomes and caravans

General

  • Award-winning park in a wooded valley and wildlife haven
  • Within 15 minutes' drive of Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and Croyde Bay
  • Restaurant, play parks and coffee shop overlooking gardens and lake

If life’s little stresses are getting you down, flee and hide away in this award-winning park in a Devon wooded valley.

From your doorstep at Hidden Valley Park all the highlights of north Devon are within easy reach: the famed beaches of Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and Croyde Bay are no more than 15 minutes' drive away, and family days out at The Big Sheep are about half an hour from the site. But this pretty place is so secluded you'll feel like the world outside doesn’t even exist (which is always a win…).

There's no need to leave the grounds until you're fully perked up, with plenty of peaceful options including wandering along the stream running through the park, lazing about the lakeside area, or taking a woodland walk to spot kingfishers and otters.

Take a tramp through the forest then come back for a cream tea in the coffee shop overlooking the gardens and lake – there’s wifi access too so you can load up your phone/tablet and studiously avoid catching up on work. Which is also a win… For more substantial eats, a restaurant is also on site.

Kids and dogs can hide away too, as there are two play parks for the youngsters and the park is dog-friendly. Amenities include luxury shower and toilet blocks with hairdryers and underfloor heating, full disabled facilities, a reception with tourist information, a licensed shop and a launderette.

Once it’s time to venture off site, a bus stop is just outside the entrance to the park.

Nice little restaurant that serves basic food to eat in or take away, accepts dogs in the restaurant too. Nice size pitch in a nice location. Plenty of lovely walks around the site. The toilets, showers and laundry rooms were all very clean. A nice place to stay between Ilfracombe and Barnstable with a frequent bus service just outside the main entrance if you don't want to drive. All the staff were friendly.

The site looks lovely, the restaurant is really nice but unfortunately we didn’t get a chance to try the food. The toilet blocks are nice and clean, the site is well maintained

    Disliked:

The grass allocated to our pitch was a bit too small for our needs. We have 2 dogs (one of them is a puppy) and could have done with a slightly bigger grass area for the dogs to run around.
There was a lot of ticks but I appreciate it’s due to the setting

If you’re staying in a motorhome the elms and surrounding pitches are on the better end in our opinion, we stayed one night in the elms and one night in the buttercombe meadow. The toilets / showers / bins and recycling / reception and restraunt are all closer in the Elms end and they have more dog waste bins. It’s also quieter you can hear the main road more in buttercombe and a noise that sounded like geese from about 7am. The restraunt is lovely and really reasonably priced. They also do themed nights eg we went on a Saturday and it was pizza night. They do stop serving about 8-8:30pm though. The number 21 bus runs every half an hour to ilfracombe from the main road which is a 2 minute walk. But don’t expect to stick too closely to the schedule one of the return buses didn’t turn up so we waited an hour for a one bus. Overall it’s been a lovely stay both pitches we had were lovely and the whole site is very dog friendly which is great! The pitches are easy to set up and are spacious giving you privacy and space to set up what you want / need. If you arrive on the site after 9pm call ahead as the barriers are locked. Thanks for a great stay Hidden Valley! We will absolutely be recommending you. Huge thanks to Cheryl for being so helpful and friendly!

Good, well appointed pitches. Nice clean toilet and shower block. Lovely walks for dogs away from the site, which makes up for the very small dog walking area on site. Very friendly and helpful staff.

    Disliked:

A very pleasant, but expensive break. Our stay was not cheap by any stretch, and worked out at around £44 per night for a two week stay! The Sunday roast from the restaurant was not cheap and was fairly small in size. The site shop was also very expensive, double the normal price for green organic toilet fluid.

Local attractions

Hidden Valley is four miles from two of Devon’s best-known beaches, Woolacombe and Ilfracombe, five miles from the surfing mecca of Croyde Bay and six from a family day out at the beach of Saunton Sands.

The areas around all these are well worth a look, but the Victorian harbour town of Ilfracombe is a must for bucketloads of boat trips such as punts out to nearby Lundy Island, the seafront with the Landmark Theatre, and St Nicholas Chapel on Lantern Hill, where a light has shone over the harbour for over a thousand years. Bring a torch for a walk to the Ilfracombe Museum and Tunnels beach, reached by tunnels through the cliff.

Many family attractions close by for all weathers, including Exmoor Zoo (25 minutes' drive) and The Big Sheep (30 minutes), while sprogs will probably also like spotting ponies in the Exmoor wilderness, getting creeped out in the dungeon labyrinths of Watermouth Castle (20 minutes) or taking to the skies in the rides at the Milky Way Adventure Park, 45 minutes away at Bideford.

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (14.2 miles)

National Trust

  • Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (7.1 miles)
  • Heddon Valley (10.5 miles)
