General

  • Award-winning park in a wooded valley and wildlife haven
  • Within 15 minutes' drive of Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and Croyde Bay
  • Restaurant, play parks and coffee shop overlooking gardens and lake

If life’s little stresses are getting you down, flee and hide away in this award-winning park in a Devon wooded valley.

From your doorstep at Hidden Valley all the highlights of north Devon are within easy reach: the famed beaches of Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and Croyde Bay are no more than 15 minutes' drive away, and family days out at The Big Sheep are about half an hour from the site. But this pretty place is so secluded you'll feel like the world outside doesn’t even exist (which is, always, a win...).

There's no need to leave the grounds until you're fully perked up, with plenty of peaceful options including wandering along the stream running through the park, lazing about the lakeside area, or taking a woodland walk to spot kingfishers and otters.

Take a tramp through the forest then come back for a cream tea in the coffee shop overlooking the gardens and lake – there’s wifi access too so you can load up your phone/tablet and studiously avoid catching up on work. Which is also a win... For more substantial eats, a restaurant is also on site.

Kids and dogs can hide away too, as there are two play parks for the youngsters and the park is dog-friendly. Amenities include luxury shower and toilet blocks with hairdryers and underfloor heating, full disabled facilities, a reception with tourist information, a licensed shop and a launderette.

Once it’s time to venture off site, a bus stop is just outside the entrance to the park.

We disliked the road noise and the lack of up keep of road surfaces, restaurant furniture and carpets. There were not enough facilities for older children to be entertained.

The campsite was in a beautiful setting with gorgeous woodland walks to take the dog/ run in. Stream running through the campsite made a gorgeous sound to fall asleep too. Large plots so you do not feel cramped in. Lovely and clean toileting facilities with hot showers whether showering at 6am or 11at night.

the only thing I could possibly say is to play some music in the toilet blocs. it just relaxes and takes your mind away from the other people in the facilities.

Restaurant was excellent, really friendly also chatty, makes you feel like coming back. as for the food, we couldn't fault it. Very well prepared.
So there are areas that you can hear road noise, but I suppose it depends on when you go, besides I got woken up more times with the chattering of birds than I did with traffic, but this is no different when I am at home so not a problem for me. Take a beer sit down, relax, watch the world go by... Try it it works, oh and ignore the time, even if it's only 9am take a beer!
The site worked for us, so really can't fault it.
Slow walk around the site kills a couple of hours.
    Good value for the money.
    Thank you

    Nit pick....
Shop had limited produce so had to drive to get basics e.g mushrooms. I can understand if these are not sold, but mushrooms are not that expensive and could always get used in the restaurant. only in my opinion.

Local attractions

Hidden Valley is four miles from two of Devon’s best-known beaches, Woolacombe and Ilfracombe, five miles from the surfing mecca of Croyde Bay and six from a family day out at the beach of Saunton Sands.

The areas around all these are well worth a look, but the Victorian harbour town of Ilfracombe is a must for bucketloads of boat trips such as punts out to nearby Lundy Island, the seafront with the Landmark Theatre, and St Nicholas Chapel on Lantern Hill, where a light has shone over the harbour for over a thousand years. Bring a torch for a walk to the Ilfracombe Museum and Tunnels beach, reached by tunnels through the cliff.

Many family attractions close by for all weathers, including Exmoor Zoo (25 minutes' drive) and The Big Sheep (30 minutes), while sprogs will probably also like spotting ponies in the Exmoor wilderness, getting creeped out in the dungeon labyrinths of Watermouth Castle (20 minutes) or taking to the skies in the rides at the Milky Way Adventure Park, 45 minutes away at Bideford.

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (14.2 miles)

National Trust

  • Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (7.1 miles)
  • Heddon Valley (10.5 miles)
