General

  • Award-winning park in a wooded valley
  • Easy access to the main attractions of north Devon
  • Coffee shop overlooking gardens and lake

If life’s little stresses are getting you down, flee and hide away in this award-winning park in a Devon wooded valley. From your doorstep at Hidden Valley all the highlights of north Devon are within easy reach, yet once you’re snuggled up in your sleeping bag, relaxing in the on-site restaurant or gazing dreamily over the countryside, it’ll be like the world outside doesn’t even exist. Which is, always, a win...

There’s no need to leave until you’re fully rejuvenated, with plenty of relaxing options including wandering along the stream running through the park, lolling about the lakeside area and taking a woodland walk to spot kingfishers and otters.

Take a tramp through the forest then come back for a full English breakfast or cream tea in the coffee shop overlooking the gardens and lake – there’s wifi access too so you can load up your iPod and studiously avoid catching up on work. Which is also a win.

Kids and dogs can hide away too, as there are two play parks for the youngsters and the park is dog-friendly. Other Hidden Valley amenities include luxury shower and toilet blocks with hairdryers and underfloor heating, full disabled facilities, a reception with tourist information, a licensed shop and a launderette.

Once it’s time to venture off site, a bus stop is just outside the entrance to the park.

    The situation

    Disliked:

The fact that because it was a quiet part of the season there was no milk or bread in the shop at a reasonable time in the morning!
Not stated when booking that the tv aerial signal wasn't good so when we arrived found that we needed to pay to hire an extended tv aerial to enable us to watch tv (which we would have taken with us if we'd known) and also to pay extra for wifi put the total cost of the pitch up to what some other sites in a more desired area were charging.
Overhanging tree branches meant dripping on roof through the he night.
    Road noise was quite apparent.

    Disliked:

The touring pitches were only 50ft from the main A361 road which was very noisy up to 11.00pm at night and sparadic throughout the night then restarted early in the morning.

Local attractions

Hidden Valley is just four miles from two of Devon’s best-known beaches, Woolacombe and Ilfracombe, five miles from the surfing mecca of Croyde Bay and six miles from a family day out at the beach of Saunton Sands.

The areas around all these are well worth a look, but the Victorian harbour town of Ilfracombe is a must for bucketloads of boat trips such as punts out to nearby Lundy Island, the seafront with the new Landmark Theatre, and St Nicholas Chapel on Lantern Hill, where a light has shone over the harbour for over 1000 years. Bring a torch and an attitude for a walk to the Ilfracombe Museum and Tunnels beach, reached by tunnels through the cliff.

Many family attractions close by for all weathers, including the Big Sheep, the Dinosaur Adventure Park and Exmoor Zoo, while the sprogs will probably also like spotting ponies in the Exmoor wilderness, getting creeped out in the dungeon labyrinths of Watermouth Castle or taking to the skies in the rides at the Milky Way Adventure Theme Park.

Must see

  • RHS Garden Rosemoor (14.1 miles)

National Trust

  • Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum (7.1 miles)
  • Heddon Valley (10.6 miles)
