General

  • Quiet and friendly family site on a farm four miles from Bodmin
  • Five miles from the Eden Project and 30 minutes' drive from the coast
  • Within easy reach of the Camel Trail cycle route and other bike paths

No bright lights, no noisy clubhouse and no rigid rules... just peace, quiet and a mightily friendly vibe in a stargazing and cycling haven close to Bodmin and the Eden Project – sound just splendid? Then pitch yourself up at Mena Farm.

Run by Ali and Neil, Mena is a family-friendly farm site in central Cornwall, five miles from Bodmin and the Eden Project and eight from St Austell. This is cracking cycling country, with several bike routes running from or near the site and the 18 scenic miles of the family-friendly Camel Trail reachable at Bodmin. Going beachwards, Fowey on the south coast and Newquay on the north are both within half an hour's drive.

For days on site, ramble your way over to the wilder corners of Mena for den building and wildlife spotting (species to spy include badgers, rabbits, deer and buzzards), or trundle along to meet the pigs and chickens; egg collecting assistance is most welcome. By night, the combo of clear skies and lack of blazing lights on the park means there's some stellar stargazing to be had. Barbecues and campfires are – of course – allowed at this laidback place, so you can add sausages (and cider?) to your astronomical exploits.

Ali and Neil have added a play area and a barn with games, books and a TV to further aid idling, and the mini market sells a good range of essentials to sort supplies without stirring from the grounds; you can also – how fab – get fish and chips delivered right to your pitch.

On arrival the welcome is really friendly and welcoming, on getting to the pitch there are hedges for privacy and everything in close reach. Once set up I went to the dog field which is second to none, 2 fields and a pond! Nothing better and a little chat with Del-boy and Rodney on the way past as well. Of an evening step outside and take in the fantastic dark skies of Cornwall.

I NEVER write reviews, but I found the reviews on this wonderful place so helpful I had to add to them and confirm all the great things people have said about Mena Farm! Small, friendly campsite. Clean facilities, excellent location for exploring any part of Cornwall. Large pitches, good variety of pitches available. Very helpful owners, who clearly work very hard to make everyone's stay enjoyable. Immaculate campsite with grass cut regularly. Brilliant open kids' play area where they can play safely close by, but not too close to pitches.

Lovely site with a warm and friendly welcome from the owners. Well signed and even the sat nav found it easily. Spacious pitches and not over crowded. Nicely stocked shop at reception, good clean toilets and showers. Son loved the play barn and play area. I enjoyed the visit from the pizza maker and the cocktails caravan on Sunday! Overall a great site and one I'd use again if I was visiting Cornwall.

    Disliked:

Not really a dislike but wifi wasn't great, which wasn't entirely unexpected. Fortunately it wasn't an essential for us.

From the manager...

Hi Suzanne - many thanks for your lovely review. It is a pleasure to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Mena. I'm sorry the wifi wasn't as good as you'd hoped - it is free to use, so it does depend on who many people are using it at any one time. We're glad to hear this wasn't too much of an issue for you, and hope you do call back in next time you're down this way. Thanks again and all the very best, Ali & Neil

Neil and Ali were the perfect hosts! Nothing too much trouble and always keen to check their guests were ok. Neil was a great help and font of knowledge regarding walking in the area and suggested a perfect walk across Dartmoor to break my long journey home. The site is perfect - not too big so remained friendly and 'homely' with a mix of tents, caravans and glamping. The added extras make this a perfect site that I will definitely return to - the games barn although I didn't actually use it must have been a godsend for parents with the terrible weather. The best bits though were the fish and chip delivery direct to your tent, the cocktail van and the pizza van!! Took away the stress of trying to cook in wet and windy conditions when tired and was a delightful bonus that made the trip extra special - not touches I bet you will find at many sites!

The site was clean and well kept and the pitches flat. The water points, bins and shower / toilet facilities were all seconds away. The facilities were basic but adequate and always clean. Although I didn't need to use them there were laundry facilities too. Great for families with the play area situated in the centre of the camping area so you can keep an eye and as mentioned the games barn is a very nice and welcome touch for families.

The location is great, a fantastic base for exploring though remember to follow the site's directions and not the sat nav for the last bit as the roads are VERY narrow!
Some great places 10mins away for a good breakfast - highly recommend Malcolm Barnecott in Bodmin and the Rockhill cafe in Bugle. Wongs Chinese takeaway in Bodmin was also great and only 10mins away. Definitely take advantage of the fish and chip delivery direct to your tent as it was delicious as was Woody's wood fired pizza.

The reception area on site has a small supply of food and sundry items as well as wood for fire pits. It also sells drinks and alcohol. There is an extensive range of leaflets on local attractions and Neil is very helpful when it comes to making any suggestions or helping with bookings. The site also has WiFi for those who can't quite make the break from technology!

A fantastic base for my short trip and will definitely return when I am next in the area. Thank you Neil and Ali!
