Bucket and Spade: Outside the shepherd's hut (photo added by manager on 06/09/2022)

General

  • Small family-run touring site in the village of Sidlesham
  • A 10-minute drive from Chichester and south coast beaches
  • Simple, well-kept pitches; pub two minutes' walk away

As one might guess from the name, Bucket and Spade is close to the coast – about 10 minutes’ drive from the beaches of Bracklesham Bay, West Wittering, East Wittering and Selsey, in fact.

This touring site's handy location means you can spend many a day bouncing around between different coastal corners, trying out watersports, building sandcastles, paddling and taking walks through the dunes along the shoreline.

Being slightly inland means that this site also has the advantage of being surrounded by splendid West Sussex countryside for walks and other outdoor activities (with the handy bonus of there being a pub two minutes’ walk from the site for a drink and some food at the end of the day if you want…)

For other eating options you may like to head up into Chichester, which is 10 minutes’ drive away and has plenty of places to pick from (and a whole bunch of things to see and do as well, of course).

Life on site is fairly simple, with the facilities stretching just to toilets, showers and a washing-up area. It’s all nicely maintained though, with plenty of space and trees to give shade, privacy and a bit of colour.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Tents are not accepted at this park.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

Nice small campsite. Fairly well set up with good & clean facilities.
Very close to footpaths for walking.
Well located for Selsey, Chichester etc.

    Disliked:

Downside- site is quite close to the road- which isn’t mentioned in the main description of the site. (Although the people running it/ did move us to a pitch as far back from the road as possible).
Only other note is-signs for the campsite are not very clear at all & trying to see them while on a busy main road was difficult & took a few attempts. If much clearer & larger signs were there it would be far easier.

A great place to stop over convenient to the local coast and the city of Chichester.

There is a great pub, The Anchor, which is walkable.

Another bonus is the bus service into Chichester and Selsey, again a few minutes walk to the bus stops.

    The onsite facilities are fantastic.

Great security with a security coded access gate.

    Would highly recommend.

Directions

If you are using a satnav you may find that it takes you past the site. It's about 100 yards past the Anchor pub on the right, so look out for the pub on your left and the thatched cottage. If you reach the garage on the right-hand side you have gone too far.

Local attractions

And so to the beach – perhaps with a bucket and spade for the sandy stretch at West Wittering or some watersports kit for surfing or kitesurfing at Bracklesham Bay (both 10 minutes’ drive). Elsewhere along the coast, take walks around the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (five minutes) or out to Selsey Bill (10 minutes), or go wildlife-spotting at Pagham Harbour Local Nature Reserve (15 minutes).

To get a sense of the area’s history, a trip to Weald & Downland Living Museum (15 minutes) is a must – the various exhibits, demonstrations and buildings are great for getting kids intrigued in times gone by. There’s more history to soak up at Fishbourne Roman Palace (10 minutes) and around Chichester (10 minutes), where top recommendations include the cathedral, Pallant House Gallery and Festival Theatre.

For alternative activities, perhaps you’d fancy playing a round at Chichester Golf Club (five minutes) – or maybe sampling the top-notch sparkling wines on a tour and tasting at Tinwood Estate vineyard (15 minutes).
