Bucket and Spade: Outside the shepherd's hut

General

  • Small family-run touring site in the village of Sidlesham
  • A 10-minute drive from Chichester and south coast beaches
  • Simple, well-kept pitches; pub two minutes' walk away

As one might guess from the name, Bucket and Spade is close to the coast – about 10 minutes’ drive from the beaches of Bracklesham Bay, West Wittering, East Wittering and Selsey, in fact.

This touring site's handy location means you can spend many a day bouncing around between different coastal corners, trying out watersports, building sandcastles, paddling and taking walks through the dunes along the shoreline.

Being slightly inland means that this site also has the advantage of being surrounded by splendid West Sussex countryside for walks and other outdoor activities (with the handy bonus of there being a pub two minutes’ walk from the site for a drink and some food at the end of the day if you want…)

For other eating options you may like to head up into Chichester, which is 10 minutes’ drive away and has plenty of places to pick from (and a whole bunch of things to see and do as well, of course).

Life on site is fairly simple, with the facilities stretching just to toilets, showers and a washing-up area. It’s all nicely maintained though, with plenty of space and trees to give shade, privacy and a bit of colour.

Please note

Group bookings of 2 or more units (e.g. tent, touring caravan, motorhome or accommodation hire) travelling together are not permitted via Pitchup.com.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Twin axle vehicles are not permitted on site.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Protective masks must be worn at all times in common areas.

Guests are advised to bring a good quality torch with them as parts of the site are unlit.

At least one of the party members must be aged 18 or over.

Tents are not accepted at this park.

Ease of location, large pitch, plenty of space between pitches, dog friendly, quite(ish), gated site with pin code access so good for security too.
Good pub just 2 minutes walk (sadly booked on Pitch Up, and this pub was not mentioned, or would have used it earlier).
Owner very helpful in local information and dog walking routes too.
If looking to stay in the area again, we would happily return.

    Disliked:

To say 'disliked' would be unfair, as too many reviewers are ready to pick holes in anything. But cannot think of anything specific.

Beautiful little shepherds hut on a quiet site, overlooking a field with plenty of wildlife (we saw deer, rabbits, birds of prey and a fox). Very clean and had everything we needed. The owners were not on site when we arrived but provided instructions for entry and left the key. Close to the local pub which served decent food. A short drive from Goodwood, which was the reason for our visit. Would definitely stay again.

We are huge fans of this site at Sidlesham in Sussex, and the surrounding area, having stayed there first three years ago. Visiting family in the area once again, we were pleased to discover there was a pitch available at very short notice. The site is clean and kept in very good order. The shower and toilet block was immaculate, as was the washing up area. We would recommend this site to anyone without hesitation, and we will go back as soon as another opportunity arises.

We spent two enjoyable nights in Delilah. Peter was welcoming and extremely helpful. He ensured that we had everything we needed and gave us lots of information about the local area. Delilah was perfect: clean and well equipped. The bed was large and comfortable. This was our first stay in a shepherd’s hut and we have already booked our return visit, this time with our family.

Facilities good and showers lovely and warm.

We were only there for two nights but enjoyed it enough to book again! Has a nice feel to it and the pitches are a great size. Didn’t get the chance to sample the pub so next time eh!

Some have mentioned the road noise, which is there but we did not feel that it was intrusive at all.

If you are using a satnav you may find that it takes you past the site. It's about 100 yards past the Anchor pub on the right, so look out for the pub on your left and the thatched cottage. If you reach the garage on the right-hand side you have gone too far.

Local attractions

And so to the beach – perhaps with a bucket and spade for the sandy stretch at West Wittering or some watersports kit for surfing or kitesurfing at Bracklesham Bay (both 10 minutes’ drive). Elsewhere along the coast, take walks around the Chichester Harbour Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (five minutes) or out to Selsey Bill (10 minutes), or go wildlife-spotting at Pagham Harbour Local Nature Reserve (15 minutes).

To get a sense of the area’s history, a trip to Weald & Downland Living Museum (15 minutes) is a must – the various exhibits, demonstrations and buildings are great for getting kids intrigued in times gone by. There’s more history to soak up at Fishbourne Roman Palace (10 minutes) and around Chichester (10 minutes), where top recommendations include the cathedral, Pallant House Gallery and Festival Theatre.

For alternative activities, perhaps you’d fancy playing a round at Chichester Golf Club (five minutes) – or maybe sampling the top-notch sparkling wines on a tour and tasting at Tinwood Estate vineyard (15 minutes).
