General

  • Well-maintained pitches behind a pub a mile from Billingshurst
  • Just outside the South Downs National Park and close to vineyards
  • Traditional 17th-century pub with playground and home-cooked meals

Fancy a pint? Perhaps at a traditional 17th-century country pub? And then having but a very short toddle to get back to your digs for the night? Then you’ll most likely like the life at Limeburners Arms Camp Site, next to the pub of the same name, a mile from the West Sussex village of Billingshurst.

This is a fine spot for country rambles: there’s scenic countryside all around, with the South Downs National Park a couple of miles away. Fishing, horse riding and scenic balloon rides are all easily accessed nearby, as are days out at the likes of a farm park, gorgeous gardens, stately homes and a pleasingly large number of breweries and vineyards.

Those breweries and vineyards are worth a visit and a tour but of course you don’t need to travel at all to get a drink around here, as the pitches (all of which are of the level and grassy variety) are right behind the cosy country inn. The pub, run by the same family for the last half-century, is a family-friendly place with a play area, a beer garden and a welcoming atmosphere in which to settle for fine ales and home-cooked food.

Facilities out by the pitches include showers, toilets and a chemical disposal point, and guests have access to hot and cold water taps.

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Group bookings of 4 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

A charge of £0.20 applies for the use of the shower.

Dogs are not allowed if you are staying in the accommodation units.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

Minimum spacing of 4 metres between pitches.

Please note the pub is temporarily closed for refurbishment.

    Disliked:

Booked here due to it being next to a pub which we were going to use for food - it was shut! Would not have booked this site if I had known.
Facilities were basic, men’s toilets were flooded so they had to go into the closed pub to use them.
It would have been useful to know how much time you got in the shower for your money.
Finally, it was an absolute quagmire. We’ve camped in February in rainy weather before and expected to get a bit muddy but this was so bad.
Power kept cutting out but there was no one around to talk to about it.

From the manager...

Summery … you stay in a tent in the middle of February when there’s nothing but storms sweeping across the country…….!!!!! complain because the grass was wet …. Best joke I’ve heard all year..

Yes problem with mens toilet plumbing but additional facilities provided in place ?????

Cost of showers on booking site…. ????? Open your eyes..,

Electric cut out because over loaded due to heaters … if you don’t like cold & wet ….. don’t go camping in the winter…. Derrrrrr

SERIOUSLY……..

Owner friendly enough, but didnt really see much of him

    Disliked:

Although I accept there were staffing problems regarding pub, which can’t be helped, I only booked site for this reason. It was not open at all during our stay. It should be noted on the booking site that probably won’t be open until staffing resolved, as it has clearly been going on for a while. The showers are exceptionally small and had an added charge. I don’t mind paying extra if facilities good, but these were distinctly average. Weather conditions obviously not great at this time of year but site is generally a bit scruffy. Maybe better in summer but not great in winter as could not even go onto pitch, and had to stay on pathway. If opening in winter should reduce price.

From the manager...

Maybe if you opened your eyes you would see it was advertised that the pub was closed over Christmas..

At the time of your arrival you were happy enough to stay on the designated hard standing area not path..

It is the middle of winter freezing cold & wet …??? What do you expect the bloody tres to be in full blossom..??????

Seriously get a life & stop bloody complaining

The ground was very wet as it was early December but we were able to park up on the hard services. The pod was comfortable and had a fridge and kettle and a small heater. There was a footpath to Billingshurst and a quicker route beside the road. The pub had a good menu and was full of character. Helpful and friendly staff and good facilities. There was no wifi but the reception was good.

Absolutely terrible, arrived into a untidy site, the other guests were long term men working on local construction sites not very welcoming.also we chose this because of the pub for dinner, unfortunately it was closed due to staff shortages.
My wife didn’t feel comfortable so we drove home, very disappointed.

From the manager...

I have never heard such a load of crap...I could tell from your miserable face ..the second you arrived you were going to be a pain....

1, you cannot tell the difference of the workmen caravans as they are the same as any others on the site ...you only new because I stated that there caravans were on the hard standing area due to weather condones & you would also have to avoid the grass as it hasn't stopped raining for weeks & storms every day..

what dosen't your small brain understand about that..

2, yes mentioned about staff shortages but did in fact did open with limited staff to accommodate campsite guests ,,,,,,Derrrrrr

3, I guess why we all know why your wife is miserable..... putting up with your petty complaints..

Seriously ....wake up and look at what's happing in the world....

Lovely cosy pub serving freshly cooked food.
Campsite was chilled and pitches large. Location good to go explore - due to weather we opted to go by car.
Showers were very clean and ample hot water. Over all, campsite had all that we needed. Almost didn’t go as weather was a washout but so glad we didn’t let that stop us. Had a fun time which was very needed.

Plenty of space, fairly level pitches.

    Disliked:

Deliberately booked a Pub site - obvious reasons for social food and drink etc.
On arrival told that if we wanted a drink be quick, closing in 10 minutes. Pub closed before 4pm and not open that evening! Apparently no staff.
Asked for advice for nearby pubs or places to get food and drink - try in Billingshurst.

No information available about local walks, dog walks (even though a specific dog charge).
Toilet & shower facilities 'tired and lacking TLC', site generally untidy.
Local main road very noisy, appeared to be a busy truck route.

From the manager...

Derrrrr.. maybe if you read the information on the booking site you would know about opening hours….

Open your eyes loads of walking around ….

Nothing wrong with facilities it’s camping .. NOT THE MARIA BAY SANDS …

Yes we are short staffed but trying to maintain a certain level of hours and still provide a service for people to get away,,, but there’s obviously no pleasing you miserable twisty bull dog chewing a wasp face like you.

Your obviously a regular mr & Mrs trenchbolt

A very welcoming and helpful owner who gave us the option of pitches. We were informed that we could stay late on our last day if the tent required drying. Good facilities available for the rate charged. Good solid, flat and stone free ground to pitch a tent. Dog friendly with a walking area.
Sunday lunch was excellent and at a good price. Will definitely consider using again.

Local attractions

What to do with your day before it’s time to settle in the pub for that (first) pint? Well, those with an eye on laidback rural days may like to try taking their binoculars for a wander at RSPB Pulborough Brooks nature reserve (10 minutes’ drive) or meeting rather larger winged beasts at Huxley’s Experience birds of prey centre (20 minutes).

If you like a bit of historic house and pretty garden action, poke around at Petworth House and Park (15 minutes), take a ramble around Ramster Gardens (20 minutes) or plan a lengthy visit to Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens (25 minutes), a 240-acre listed estate with a dolls’ house museum and animals to meet. The gorgeous gardens at Nymans (25 minutes) are well worth a wander too.

Those who’ve brought the nippers along for the ride might like to aim for a bit of cooing over fluffy beings at Fishers Farm Park (five minutes) or a ride on the South Downs Light Railway (10 minutes). Not subject to the whims of the small folk? Try a trip to Nutbourne Vineyards (10 minutes) for a tour and a taste of their wares (red, white and sparkling – something for all palates…).
