Limeburners Arms Camp Site: Camping pod

General

  • Well-maintained pitches behind a pub a mile from Billingshurst
  • Just outside the South Downs National Park and close to vineyards
  • Traditional 17th-century pub with playground and home-cooked meals

Fancy a pint? Perhaps at a traditional 17th-century country pub? And then having but a very short toddle to get back to your digs for the night? Then you’ll most likely like the life at Limeburners Arms Camp Site, next to the pub of the same name, a mile from the West Sussex village of Billingshurst.

This is a fine spot for country rambles: there’s scenic countryside all around, with the South Downs National Park a couple of miles away. Fishing, horse riding and scenic balloon rides are all easily accessed nearby, as are days out at the likes of a farm park, gorgeous gardens, stately homes and a pleasingly large number of breweries and vineyards.

Those breweries and vineyards are worth a visit and a tour but of course you don’t need to travel at all to get a drink around here, as the pitches (all of which are of the level and grassy variety) are right behind the cosy country inn. The pub, run by the same family for the last half-century, is a family-friendly place with a play area, a beer garden and a welcoming atmosphere in which to settle for fine ales and home-cooked food.

Facilities out by the pitches include showers, toilets and a chemical disposal point, and guests have access to hot and cold water taps.

Please note

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

A charge of £0.20 applies for the use of the shower.

Minimum spacing of 4 metres between pitches.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

Group bookings of 4 or more adults are not permitted (couples and immediate family members excepted).

The pub is closed on Mondays.

We had a great time here. We arrived a little early but we had a good welcome and could choose our own pitch. Everything was well explained regarding the facilities.
We were lucky with having it near enough to ourselves.
It’s perfectly positioned for great walks and cycling and of course just a few steps to the lovely pub for drinks or food.
The facilities were ok. We will stay again, probably bring some friends too.

    Disliked:

There was nothing we didn’t like but the temperature regulation in the showers could be a little unpredictable. We never did find a light switch for the toilets which was not a problem, but was very dark when using them at 4am. Maybe a sensor / timer could help overnight, and a couple more hooks in the shower to hang stuff.

From the manager...

Thank you Anne

look forward to seeing you again soon..

The weather was good and it was a lovely quiet site. The toilets and showers were clean. Putting in a 20p meant the showers were warm.

There were public footpaths for a good walk.

    Disliked:

Checking in was poor- the man gave us an arm wave in the general direction of our pitch- we had to go back twice to ask for clarification. Pitch numbers were not all on view and we were unsure how far to pitch to. We appreciate the man was busy but if he had been clear the first time it would have saved him time.
There were brambles over the water tap, which we cut down. Our electric points were not plugged in so we checked our cables and equipment repeatedly until a man camping told us it was not connected.

No paper towels in the toilets and for a day no toilet paper either.

    Not given a wi-fi code

From the manager...

You were given a pitch ,,,,

You wanted to change to join other friends arriving so I changes it ….. told you bottom right hand side pitch 13-14 extended pitch giving you more room.

Learn left from your right …

We no longer use the paper towels there is a hand dryer there..

And the toilets are checked all the time to re fill .

There’s just no pleasing some people.

Please book butlins in the future …

Local attractions

What to do with your day before it’s time to settle in the pub for that (first) pint? Well, those with an eye on laidback rural days may like to try taking their binoculars for a wander at RSPB Pulborough Brooks nature reserve (10 minutes’ drive) or meeting rather larger winged beasts at Huxley’s Experience birds of prey centre (20 minutes).

If you like a bit of historic house and pretty garden action, poke around at Petworth House and Park (15 minutes), take a ramble around Ramster Gardens (20 minutes) or plan a lengthy visit to Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens (25 minutes), a 240-acre listed estate with a dolls’ house museum and animals to meet. The gorgeous gardens at Nymans (25 minutes) are well worth a wander too.

Those who’ve brought the nippers along for the ride might like to aim for a bit of cooing over fluffy beings at Fishers Farm Park (five minutes) or a ride on the South Downs Light Railway (10 minutes). Not subject to the whims of the small folk? Try a trip to Nutbourne Vineyards (10 minutes) for a tour and a taste of their wares (red, white and sparkling – something for all palates…).
