Limeburners Arms Camp Site: Blossom by the pitches

General

  • Well-maintained pitches behind a pub a mile from Billingshurst
  • Just outside the South Downs National Park and close to vineyards
  • Traditional 17th-century pub with playground and home-cooked meals

Fancy a pint? Perhaps at a traditional 17th-century country pub? And then having but a very short toddle to get back to your digs for the night? Then you’ll most likely like the life at Limeburners Arms Camp Site, next to the pub of the same name, a mile from the West Sussex village of Billingshurst.

This is a fine spot for country rambles: there’s scenic countryside all around, with the South Downs National Park a couple of miles away. Fishing, horse riding and scenic balloon rides are all easily accessed nearby, as are days out at the likes of a farm park, gorgeous gardens, stately homes and a pleasingly large number of breweries and vineyards.

Those breweries and vineyards are worth a visit and a tour but of course you don’t need to travel at all to get a drink around here, as the pitches (all of which are of the level and grassy variety) are right behind the cosy country inn. The pub, run by the same family for the last half-century, is a family-friendly place with a play area, a beer garden and a welcoming atmosphere in which to settle for fine ales and home-cooked food.

Facilities out by the pitches include showers, toilets and a chemical disposal point, and guests have access to hot and cold water taps.

Please note

The play area is closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Discount cards and gift vouchers cannot be applied to bookings made via Pitchup.com.

Commercial vehicles (vehicles used for work-related purposes, carrying goods or fare-paying passengers) and sign-written vehicles are not permitted on site.

Bookings must not be for more than 28 consecutive nights.

Guests must bring their own duvets, pillows, sheets and towels when staying in rental accommodation. You will not be allowed to stay if you do not bring these items.

Onsite entertainment will not be offered due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

Owing to government regulations, groups of 4 or more people are not permitted.

A charge of £0,20 (R4,46) applies for the use of the shower.

Dogs are not allowed in the on-site accommodations.

The site caters for families (immediate members) and couples only - bookings from all other forms of groups are not accepted.

The site does not accept breeds/crossbreeds listed in the Dangerous Dogs Act (i.e. Pit Bull Terrier, Japanese Tosa, Dogo Argentino, and Fila Brasileiro).

No bachelor/bachelorette parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

Minimum spacing of 4 metres between pitches.

The site had everything we needed and the pub was a joy. The Sunday roast was excellent but was overshadowed by the hot toast beef sandwich! Gravy, horseradish, what’s bit to like.

We stayed at the Lime Burners about 4yrs ago and enjoyed it, so stayed again for one night. The welcome was still as warm as before. The food is really really good. The only draw back is that the shower block is still not refurbished. We had wished that they would of been refurbished on this visit, but sadly no. Take lots of 20pence with you for the meter in the showers. The pub is very dog friendly and there are good walks for dogs opposite the pub on a public walk way but you must keep dogs on leads. There is no hard standing pitches, but generally the site is level.

    Disliked:

Shower block. Not a good site if bad weather or winter. This site is best for summer stops.

Pub food & beer. Not cheap but good

    Disliked:

Very very basic toilet facilities. No hot water or papers towels in the gents toilet. The basic showers (only 2) require 20p for a quick shower. Although clean the facilities need totally rebuilding. Pub was good & food excellent. Landlord very unhelpful & rude. Very expensive for basic facililities.

From the manager...

Firstly your wife wants a medal the size of a frying pan putting up with you,,,,

In 40 yrs I have Never met such an ignorant person ....

reducing a 17 yr old girl to tears ...( such a very big man )

everyone in the pub thought you were joke .

I have informed our internal campsite links to have you barred of all site.

PATHETIC LITTLE MAN.....

Local attractions

What to do with your day before it’s time to settle in the pub for that (first) pint? Well, those with an eye on laidback rural days may like to try taking their binoculars for a wander at RSPB Pulborough Brooks nature reserve (10 minutes’ drive) or meeting rather larger winged beasts at Huxley’s Experience birds of prey centre (20 minutes).

If you like a bit of historic house and pretty garden action, poke around at Petworth House and Park (15 minutes), take a ramble around Ramster Gardens (20 minutes) or plan a lengthy visit to Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens (25 minutes), a 240-acre listed estate with a dolls’ house museum and animals to meet. The gorgeous gardens at Nymans (25 minutes) are well worth a wander too.

Those who’ve brought the nippers along for the ride might like to aim for a bit of cooing over fluffy beings at Fishers Farm Park (five minutes) or a ride on the South Downs Light Railway (10 minutes). Not subject to the whims of the small folk? Try a trip to Nutbourne Vineyards (10 minutes) for a tour and a taste of their wares (red, white and sparkling – something for all palates…).
