General
- Well-maintained pitches behind a pub a mile from Billingshurst
- Just outside the South Downs National Park and close to vineyards
- Traditional 17th-century pub with playground and home-cooked meals
Fancy a pint? Perhaps at a traditional 17th-century country pub? And then having but a very short toddle to get back to your digs for the night? Then you’ll most likely like the life at Limeburners Arms Camp Site, next to the pub of the same name, a mile from the West Sussex village of Billingshurst.
This is a fine spot for country rambles: there’s scenic countryside all around, with the South Downs National Park a couple of miles away. Fishing, horse riding and scenic balloon rides are all easily accessed nearby, as are days out at the likes of a farm park, gorgeous gardens, stately homes and a pleasingly large number of breweries and vineyards.
Those breweries and vineyards are worth a visit and a tour but of course you don’t need to travel at all to get a drink around here, as the pitches (all of which are of the level and grassy variety) are right behind the cosy country inn. The pub, run by the same family for the last half-century, is a family-friendly place with a play area, a beer garden and a welcoming atmosphere in which to settle for fine ales and home-cooked food.
Facilities out by the pitches include showers, toilets and a chemical disposal point, and guests have access to hot and cold water taps.

Local attractions
What to do with your day before it’s time to settle in the pub for that (first) pint? Well, those with an eye on laidback rural days may like to try taking their binoculars for a wander at RSPB Pulborough Brooks nature reserve (10 minutes’ drive) or meeting rather larger winged beasts at Huxley’s Experience birds of prey centre (20 minutes).
If you like a bit of historic house and pretty garden action, poke around at Petworth House and Park (15 minutes), take a ramble around Ramster Gardens (20 minutes) or plan a lengthy visit to Leonardslee Lakes & Gardens (25 minutes), a 240-acre listed estate with a dolls’ house museum and animals to meet. The gorgeous gardens at Nymans (25 minutes) are well worth a wander too.
Those who’ve brought the nippers along for the ride might like to aim for a bit of cooing over fluffy beings at Fishers Farm Park (five minutes) or a ride on the South Downs Light Railway (10 minutes). Not subject to the whims of the small folk? Try a trip to Nutbourne Vineyards (10 minutes) for a tour and a taste of their wares (red, white and sparkling – something for all palates…).
