General

  • Peaceful site on the edge of the New Forest
  • Great for active outdoor enthusiasts
  • Within easy reach of numerous places of interest

Set up camp for a night or several at Avon Tyrrell Outdoor Activity Centre in the New Forest, for guaranteed busy days among a wide range of foresty fun.

For among the outdoor adventures and field study activities here you can try high and low ropes, climbing and abseiling, archery, zipwire and heaps more under the eyes of its experienced instructors – or take yourself off under your own guidance for orienteering, treasure hunting, mountain biking and fishing in its lush surrounding lakes....

Happily, a café serving the likes of jacket potatoes, paninis etc is here too so that adventurers don't have far to forage when it comes to light bites, and if you need a day off from all the action the site also has a pool, a play area and free wifi. (A tennis court and Trim Trail points are around too if you really can't help yourself.)

The Avon Tyrrell amenities block is well equipped with loos, hot showers, a baby-changing room, washing-up facilities and a launderette. A small shop is to hand for basic supplies, but both Bransgore and Burley are only two miles away if you need anything else – why not see how fast you can run there and back...?

Please note

The outdoor swimming pool is open between 01/05 and 30/09 (subject to weather conditions).

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Facilities/activities including swimming pool, climbing, kayaking, high ropes and archery are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

The use of the swimming pool is subject to a £3 per person per session charge. Sessions are limited and slots must be booked on arrival.

The swimming pool will be open: all weekends between 09/04 - 03/09, Easter holidays (09/04 - 23/04), half term (27/04 - 04/06), and summer holidays (26/07 - 03/09)

The staff members - They were helpful and kind.
    Along with the other campers

    Disliked:

The children liked being near the forest playground.
But as an adult it would have been nicer to have pitched by the lake.
However, they said if we booked again, phone the site directly and they would allocate a lake spot if available.
The pool was freezing- a few degrees hotter would have been preferable.
It's sad that there aren't more activities.
Limited places when arrived but we know to book in advance next time.
Toilets could have been cleaner and checked more often.
Only one warm shower in our block.

Great stay 21/08/2017

We stayed for 4 nights and found the site to be well maintained and a lovely welcome from reception,

The open lake was good as it meant we could take the youngest member of the group out on the lake as at only 4 he was not able to join any of the other activities. This is not hugely advertised but you can just pop down when open lake is on and for a reasonable charge hire a open top kayak or Pedalo.

We did not really have time to explore the whole site but would consider coming back again it's a great base to explore the new forest or further afield.

In either direction, there are small shops if traveling by car there is a well-stocked co-op fish and chips shop if you can't be bothered to cook and also on-site facilities that we did not get around to trying out.

We certainly did not feel like the site was over crowded but were very lucky to fall in between busy periods

Shower blocks were well maintained and clean most of the time however there did seem to be some inconsistency with the inspection sign off sheets (now i am just being picky)

    Disliked:

Some areas are poorly marked and we were not advised about the communal fridge/Freezer and when we found out on the last day and checked the map there is no reference to this. (saying that we never really explored around the main areas as we had too much to do)

At night the site is not very well lit, however this is fine we would rather it was dark than to be battle against light. however at the bottom of the Lake field there is an area where activities take place and there is a hole that to be honest is not very well marked we witness several people go down this at night - Just simply placing a cone over it or something may be sensible.

Great setting and a relaxed atmosphere. Lots of activities to book to keep children occupied - we did climbing, archery and the adventure course. The children also enjoyed the free to use trim trails, bouldering wall and outside games such as Jenga. The staff were friendly and helpful and the instructors were good fun. The ladies toilets and outside sinks for washing up were always very clean. There is a lovely new cafe which had a good range of food and the staff were accomodating when we wanted to order from the lunch menu early. Lovey wooded children's play area next to our field (Meadow) which meant children could play where we could see them.

    Disliked:

Noisy at night - take ear plugs. Pool was freezing! Was 22 degrees and we braved it and still had a laugh but it wasnt for the faint hearted.Husband said men's toilets in the block we were using weren't particularly clean but he used the ones near the house which he said were very clean so not a major problem.

Directions

From London, the north or east: from the southbound M3, join the M27 and follow signs for the West and Bournemouth.
The M27 eventually becomes the A31, after approximately 15 miles exit left for Burley (signposted Burley and Services).

Follow the signs into Burley for about 2.5 miles. In the centre of the village you will find a triangular junction with a war memorial in the centre - turn right, signposted Bransgore and Avon Tyrrell).

After 1.8 miles you will rise up a hill and come to a crossroads at Thorney Hill, where you will need to turn right, signposted for Avon Tyrrell.

Go over the cattle grid and continue for 400m until you reach a fork in the road and a white cottage on the right - there will be a large sign for Avon Tyrrell straight in front of you, take the right fork.

From the west: head for Ringwood via the A31 or the A338, continue east past Ringwood for approximately 1 mile and as you get to the top of a hill turn left, signposted Burley and services.

Around the New Forest, the many places to see include the New Forest Wildlife Park in Southampton, an ancient natural woodland and wildlife haven (look out for otters and owls); the award-winning National Motor Museum at Beaulieu and Liberty's Owl, Raptor and Reptile Centre at Ringwood.

Pipsqeaks have the home of Peppa Pig World at Paultons Family Theme Park 30 minutes away for actively exciting day out, as well as the hands-on activities and indoor and outdoor play areas of Longdown Dairy Farm in Southampton and the Dinosaur Museum in Dorchester. Naturally, they might like trekking with a New Forest pony too.
