Avon Tyrrell Outdoor Activity Centre: Boathouse

General

  • Peaceful site surrounded by lakes, on the edge of the New Forest
  • Activities including high ropes, climbing and abseiling
  • Play area, tennis, kids' bouldering walls and café

Set up camp for a night or several at Avon Tyrrell Outdoor Activity Centre in the New Forest, for guaranteed busy days among a wide range of forest adventures.

For among the outdoor adventures and field study activities here, you can try high and low ropes, climbing and abseiling, archery, zipwire and heaps more under the eyes of its experienced instructors – or take yourself off under your own guidance for orienteering, treasure hunting, mountain biking and fishing in its lush surrounding lakes....

Happily, a café serving the likes of jacket potatoes, paninis etc is here too so that adventurers don't have far to forage when it comes to light bites, and if you need a day off from all the action the site also has a play area and free wifi. (A tennis court and kid-sized bouldering walls are around too if you really can't help yourself...)

The Avon Tyrrell amenities block is well equipped with toilets, hot showers, a baby-changing room, washing-up facilities and a launderette. A small shop is to hand for basic supplies, but both Bransgore and Burley are only two miles away if you need anything else – maybe see how fast you can run there and back...?

Fact that cafe was shut, felt bushcraft could have been more interesting than just lighting a fire-thought perhaps would do a bit of whittling or something more & we never learnt the instructors name as she never really gave us a proper welcome & introduction to the course. By contrast, Andy on canoeing was so good. He was careful with safety, included everyone and was very kind & caring with all of us. He is a great asset.

We (my 15 year old son, a friend and her son aged 10) spent two nights camping at Avon Tyrrell. We set up our tent in the trees, a lovely spot with very few other campers around. Not surprising in October I suppose! The shower block and toilets were very clean with plenty of hot water. The staff were very friendly and helpful. I would like to say a special 'thank you' to Andy who was our climbing wall instructor and also one of the instructors on the high ropes. His patience and expertise meant our climbers achieved more than they ever thought possible. We are planning on returning next year to take advantage of the other activities that we did not get a chance to do. I would definitely recommend Avon Tyrrell as a place to visit.

Several bike tracks start directly from the site, so pack a picnic and head off into the New Forest to find your own adventure – perhaps you might fancy a pedal to the Dorset and Hampshire beaches of Christchurch, Mideford, Southbourne or Highcliffe...? The sands of Bournemouth are about 10 miles away.

Around the New Forest, the many places to see include the New Forest Wildlife Park in Southampton, an ancient natural woodland and wildlife haven (look out for otters and owls); the award-winning National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, and Liberty's Owl, Raptor and Reptile Centre at Ringwood.

Pipsqeaks have the home of Peppa Pig World at Paultons Family Theme Park 30 minutes away for actively exciting day out, as well as the hands-on activities and indoor and outdoor play areas of Longdown Dairy Farm in Southampton and the Dinosaur Museum in Dorchester. Naturally, they might like trekking with a New Forest pony too.
