Avon Tyrrell Outdoor Activity Centre: Boathouse

General

  • Peaceful site surrounded by lakes, on the edge of the New Forest
  • Activities including high ropes, climbing and abseiling
  • Play area, tennis, kids' bouldering walls and café

Set up camp for a night or several at Avon Tyrrell Outdoor Activity Centre in the New Forest, for guaranteed busy days among a wide range of forest adventures.

Among the outdoor adventures and field study activities here, you can try high and low ropes, climbing and abseiling, archery, zipwire and heaps more under the eyes of its experienced instructors – or take yourself off under your own guidance for orienteering, treasure hunting, mountain biking and fishing in its lush surrounding lakes....

Happily, a café serving the likes of jacket potatoes, paninis etc is here too so that adventurers don't have far to forage when it comes to light bites, and if you need a day off from all the action the site also has a play area and free wifi. (A tennis court and kid-sized bouldering walls are around too if you really can't help yourself...)

The Avon Tyrrell amenities block is well equipped with toilets, hot showers, a baby-changing room, washing-up facilities and a launderette. A small shop is to hand for basic supplies, but both Bransgore and Burley are only two miles away if you need anything else – maybe see how fast you can run there and back...?

Please note

Under 18s must be accompanied by their parents or legal guardians.

Facilities/activities including Archery, Paddleboarding and High Ropes are subject to extra charges payable on arrival.

Swimming in the lake is not allowed.

Reception is unmanned after 5 p.m.. Please inform the campground while on your way there should you expect to arrive after this time so that the team can provide information about your unit/site.

No hen/stag parties permitted via Pitchup.com.

The laundry facilities are currently closed due to restrictions imposed by the coronavirus outbreak.

A cable measuring at least 3 metres is needed for the electric hook-ups.

Dogs are not allowed in the accommodation units.

Water from showers went in all directions except for actually on the person in it. Directed at walls, which made showering difficult.

Midges! We were too close to the lake... Most of us are now very spotty and itchy.
Struggled to find a fire pit we could use. Unisex toilets/showers not popular with female members of our group.

  • Liked:

Really relaxed site. Mainly an activity centre which allowed us to try paddle boarding for the first time on the small lake there. The instructors were lovely and gave clear instructions. Really good value at £12 for an hour and a half. Lots of space to play ball games. A few activities were free for the children e.g. cycling track, playground and boulder wall. Lovely toilets and showers. Well heated next to the lake.
    Will definitely go again.

    Disliked:

Nothing about the site or activities, just the fact you have to vacate the pitch by 10am!

Around the New Forest, the many places to see include the New Forest Wildlife Park in Southampton, an ancient natural woodland and wildlife haven (look out for otters and owls); the award-winning National Motor Museum at Beaulieu, and Liberty's Owl, Raptor and Reptile Centre at Ringwood.

Pipsqeaks have the home of Peppa Pig World at Paultons Family Theme Park 30 minutes away for actively exciting day out, as well as the hands-on activities and indoor and outdoor play areas of Longdown Dairy Farm in Southampton and the Dinosaur Museum in Dorchester. Naturally, they might like trekking with a New Forest pony too.
