High Hall Campsite: The pod sits on the banks of the Croglin Beck

General

  • Waterside Cumbrian retreat in the rural Eden Valley
  • Three miles from Kirkoswald; 30 minutes' drive to the Lake District
  • All pitches come with a firepit and picnic bench; coarse fishing lake

Established in 2021, High Hall Campsite gives you the opportunity to come and explore everything that makes Cumbria tick. Tucked away under the hills of the North Pennine fells and set deep in the gorgeous Eden Valley, this is an excellent place to arrange a relaxed rural retreat.

The grounds here are divided by Croglin Beck, a scenic stream that meanders its way through the middle of the site. There are plenty of waterside views around and wildlife is abundant: red squirrels, roe deer, barn owls and kingfishers may be among the animals you spot. There are also farm animals to admire and a well-stocked coarse fishing lake that guests can use free of charge. (Please note that a catch-and-return fishing policy is in place.)

This Cumbrian campsite is fairly remote, but it's easy to drop by in Kirkoswald (three miles from base), where points of interest like a hotel, pub, convenience store and ruined castle can be accessed.

High Hall Campsite is located on the edge of the North Pennines Area of Outstanding National Beauty. This secluded site would also make a good base for day trips to the Lake District National Park, which is 30 minutes away by road.

Lovely, well maintained little site with friendly atmosphere & welcoming hosts who took the time to stop & have a chat - especially the lovely 'Hen' (Fiona).
Relaxed, pretty environment between a brook & a stream with good, clean facilities & a useful communal area with small kitchenette (kettle, toaster, microwave), some basic purchasable supplies, a ping pong table & board games & nice, modern showers with great water pressure.
Appreciated the fact they offer a recycling point too.
Each pitch has a fire pit & garden bench which is a nice touch.
Electric hook ups would be useful but it appears they are in the process of installing these on some of the pitches.

    Disliked:

The only minute room for improvement would be the cost of the logs for your firepit, which at £15 is a little steep in my opinion. If they were say £10, people would probably buy more & not grumble at the cost so much, especially if staying a few nights - quite a few campers who we chatted to mentioned the cost of these, so it seems to be a general consensus.

The site is very picturesque, clean and quiet, enough space between pitches, lovely clean showers, great composting toilets and washing up at the bottom too so no need to trek up the hill to the main barn each time. Picnic bench at each pitch and fire pit are a really good idea. Friendly and helpful too

    Disliked:

£15 for firewood is steep as the fire pit is so airy it burnt very quickly so you’d need £30 a night for wood as you can’t bring your own

We loved it so much...the beautiful location, the very accomodating friendly and welcoming staff, the fact that they thought of all the lovely little touches like putting out fresh baking to buy and board games to play as well as table tennis. My children saw a calf being born and were asked to think of a name for him. They named him "Shaun" which has even been put on his ear tag. It is something my kids will treasure forever and we cannot wait to come back for another visit.
